If it weren't for that awesome new Biotic God banner, I would rock my BoB all the time. N7 was the most grueling, and I have never even selected it...

Eh I used to not wear it, but now I do.

It doesn't mean I think I'm the best player in the lobby or anything. But f*ck it I earned it, so I'm gonna show it off,

I normally use whichever banner I just got (again) but I worked hard for 2-3 weeks to finish BoTB.  I'm gonna wear it for a bit.

Edit : As for the best player bit.  I normally play with the same team all of who are much much better than me.  No ego for me to polish in that lobby.

None of them care if I beat their score either.  Though I've only topped the board once or twice.

I alternate between all the banners I have.  Keeps things fresh.  I'll probably do the same after I get BotB.

Why I stoped wearing mine... Can I otuscore ya by 100k as the drell assassin? Yep. In fact with him in a gold pug I can break 250k in score... Have I pulled off a few plat solos? Yep. But should I be having fun and play as say... a drellguard or a vorcha engi (some of my worst kits) you win -- hell im prolly 4th. Even a true "BoTB" has rubbish chars and loadouts they play for fun. After a maxed manifest and all challenges, who cares. Most play for fun at that point and not always the top scoring OP combo they are the best with.

Is this surprising? I know that BotB can't require much, since I have it.

1, You do not knw how many of th eother players were BotB.
2, BotB guys/gals might not be playing their best kits.
3, End game screenshots do not show when these guys joined the game. It could be that they joined only halfway, etc.

Conclusion: results invalid. Also, the comparison is pretty much pointless on the first place.

Exactly. I had that banner since November of last year when not too many did and only wore it for about a week until I got tired of the look and switched to Death Guard/Collector General. I then used it again for another week when they released the fem shep but got tired of her pretty lips too. Now though I am a drell god for life. Anyways what I'm trying to say it is just a look and any average player can get it OP. Also perhaps some of them lagged or were using kits/loadouts they were not familiar with.

BoTB players are extremely random. Sometime I think they let their little brothers play on their account without givng them a clue. All PuG BoTB failed to impress me in a game though, but some BoTB players I have on my friend list sure can kick some butt.

I got my BOTB at 11:59PM (EST) last night. Two weeks ago, the only challenges I had complete were killing enemies and lone wolf. It really isn't hard to get- just takes a LOT of grinding. I'm glad I did all the grinding- it gave me an appreciation for characters I hadn't previously used (I'm a GI / DI guy).

I top the scoreboard every time I wear my try-hard panties in a PUG match. However, I like to have fun, not compete. It's more enjoyable (for me) to see what I can get away with rather than worrying about my score. (How many times can I get away with charge/nova on a banshee in platinum before I get picked up? How can I improve my odds next time? etc). Don't get me wrong- if my teammates are struggling, I'll stop goofing off... but fun > score.

I dealt with some of this stuff in my second comment (1st page). I'll deal with (1) again since it keeps coming up.

True. In a few cases, some of the other players might conceivably have had BotB based on Challenge Points. (Case C, for instance, had plenty of guys with really high Challenge Points.) However, in far more cases they couldn't have, and their loadouts were typically far less powerful (in terms of level of guns, equipment, etc) than the BotB guys. I also didn't include a few matches with BotB that didn't go to final objective for whatever reason, although the results were the same there: a few really good players and a few who played poorly, even on host.

For point 3, none of the BotB guys came in midway (I only included those where the banner holder readied up in lobby prior to the match). I think one random non-BotB player did come in mid-way and ended up in last place, but I'd have to look up which match that was.

For whatever it's worth, I'm not playing 'overpowered' kits or using elite guns in any of these matches. In most cases, I ran the Turian Sentinel with the Eagle, Krogan Sentinel with basic Crusader, Batarian Sentinel (can't recall the gun), or Batarian Soldier with the Phaeston or my basic Talon. I never run equipment higher than level two in random lobbies until I've tried my connection to the host first, so that's not a factor either.

Anyway, I don't believe this is definitive or particularly important. Like I said on the first page, I just figured other people might find some of this interesting.

If you have a huge ego, then wear it (like me XD). I wear it to symbolize my love of the franchise and to show that I have a brain. I out score 90% of all the PUGs I play with, except when I run into good BSN players. I play for fun, but I just happen to score high most of the time because I understand the mechanics of the game from the hundreds of hours that I've played.
Plus I get to look at Sheploo's sexy face all the time ;)

BOTB most of the time should be a decent indicator of a reasonably good player just due to the soloing that is required. As for scoring, there are just a ton of things that go into that aspect in a game by game basis.

None of the banners require a good amount of skill, just a good amount of time. The only exception is Lone Wolf which doesn't require a lot of time but can still be done on fairly easy mode Kroguard/Geth/Reegar.

I would say that most things in the game in general don't require a great deal of skill.

The title says "An Average Player vs. Best of the Best"

The two are interchangeable. Anyone with enough time invested can get Best of the Best, provided they are somewhat competent. But the banner doesn't mean you're a good player or a bad one, it just means you completed a challenge. Being an average player doesn't preclude you from that distinction.

The only thing keeping most players from completing challenges is RNG witholding weapons & characters from us.

I honestly usually don't see much of a difference between the BotB with the N7 5600, or the Dog of War with the N7 1300. It's sadly come down to forumites and non forumites. The top two best players I've ever played with, one is a BotB and the other isn't. Both are forumites. Both can take any character and make it look easy. Most non forumites simply don't have the knowledge of game mechanics, or even spawn points, to be that good. BotB is nearly meaningless in terms of display of skill. Grind banner is grind banner.

The BOTB banner means that it's holder completed the 25 challenges required, and that therefore he/she is an skilled, experienced player.

I got mine a couple of months ago after completing the Lone Wolf challenge (for the first and last time, I hate soloing, but that's just me).

I only display the banner when I play private games (mostly gold & plats) with certain friends who also hold it.

Having that banner doesen't make you the best player in the lobby, much less inmortal :)

There are other factors, like the difficulty of the game, and the level of the player: is not the same to play a gold macth with a level 8 character than with a level 20 one) and wich kit you're usiing; I know I'll die 1,000 times more with a level 20 volus kit that with a any other kit at level 10. I'm simply not comfortable with the volus.

So, to say you bested a BOTB player, is nothing new or even big. We're players like all the others, just with a little more hours of gameplay and experience :)

Also, you must know by now that sometimes you end up at the top of the scoreboard and the next game you're at the bottom :)

I'm Stranger_N7 so if you want, send me a friend request and I'll invite you to one of my games. I play every night so I'll be glad to add you to my friends list, then we can share some experiences and compare notches :)

Banners and challenge points don't make the player. Don't judge a book by its cover.

I was curious how a relatively bad player....  compares to people with the 'Best of the Best' banner in PUGs.
Exhibit Two

Leads me to wonder which banners people tend to view as being good signs of a player's ability, if any.

I think you got it wrong and you are measuring meaningless parameters.

BOfB speaking here, however not talking for all BofB there.
My opinion is that BofB indicates the wish to diversify, to try various combinations, and not necessary to aim to get the best score in each game. I myself frequently don't top the score board, and I don't really care.

So my advice to you is not to set your expectation too high for PUG BoBs, and check what build/weapons/consumable they have before the game, if you wish they would carry you or the team to victory in shortest time.

For me, grinding for BoTB did improve my abilities quite a bit. When I started playing my favorite and/or more ridiculously OP kits again, I found myself using a lot more cool moves and generally doing significantly better than I had done before grinding for the banner.

For example, I never used to use melee attacks at all unless I was playing a dedicated melee character, and now I just naturally use them all the time to finish off enemies during reload animations and such, even if my character has no melee specialization at all. I have the combat mastery grind to thank for that; I earned more than a third of the required melee points just from trying to melee situationally while doing other challenges.

Similarly, grinding for sniper mastery caused me to learn how to snipe in this game, something I'd always avoided trying to do because I assumed I'd just suck at it. But it turned out to be not especially difficult to do, and really fun, and also utterly devastating. I learned how to do lots of cool tricks like quickscoping and such, and so now if I play a sniper, I can do well (or at least not embarrass myself too much) even when using something like the Javelin.

But damn if I don't still absolutely suck with certain kits and weapons. I tried using the revenant (which I recently maxed out) on a low level T-Sent last night, in a silver game no less, and it was nothing short of humiliating. All the "skill" in the universe could not make that gun kill things any faster at point-blank range, and I kept getting trapped in corners under brutepiles like a total noob. If a random had decided to judge me based on that one game, well, they'd of course think "BoTB means nothing, this guy's awful!"

Whatever. I grinded for this banner and the FemShep is really hawt and has red hair and freckles and by golly if I'm not going to enjoy it for a while.

One odd thing; I knew a guy who was pretty good at the game with a team that actually couldn't get the Gold solo with the Kroguard/Geth combo. I'm not saying its super skillful, because it just isn't, but if it's possible for people to be unable to do it, I think it's reasonable to say that some skill is required.
