It turns out that the Hurlock's bad aim missed Duncan's neck and hit his beard instead, shattering the blade of the axe. Duncan then wrapped his beard around the Hurlock's neck and snapped it like a twig.
As for why he didn't return to help the PC, it turns out he actually was an Orlesian spy sent to have King Cailin killed in an elaborate ruse. Loghain had this figured out, obviously, but was unable to stop it in time.

Duncan's ALIVE?!!
(If you don't get the reference I'll lose all hope in humanity).
Duncan - ah - saviour of Thedas
Duncan - ah - he'll save ev'ry one of us
(Seemingly there is no reason for these
Extraordinary darkspawn sightings (ha ha ha)
What's happening Duncan?
Only Warden Alistair formerly of The Chantry
Has provided any explanation)
Duncan - ah - he's a miracle
(This mornings unprecedented dark spawn raid on Lothering
Is no cause for alarm)
Duncan - ah - king of the impossible
He's for ev'ry one of us
Stand for ev'ry one of us
He'll save with a mighty hand
Ev'ry man ev'ry woman ev'ry child
With his mighty beard
("Genlock Alpha, Duncan approaching"
"What do you mean Duncan approaching?
Open fire all weapons
Dispatch Ogre Alpha to bring back his body")
Duncan - ah
("Duncan's alive")
Duncan - ah - he'll save ev'ry one of us
Just a man with a man's courage
He knows nothing but a man
But he can never fail
No one but the pure in heart
May find Andraste's Ashes oh oh oh oh
("Duncan, Duncan, I love you
But we only have fourteen hours to save Ferelden")
Duncan
Why did I get flashes of the Flash Gordon intro with Flash replaced by Duncan go through my head while reading that... Awesome work dude!

Why indeed? I wonder...
But your "Duncan is alive?" line made me realize just how awesome Griffons would be in this game.
Just think about it:
Duncan goes to draw the darkspawn horde into the mist.
Meanwhile you have another bearded Grey Warden in the clouds above, leading a troop of wardens all mounted on Griffons.
"Dive!"

He is most likely a Ghoul though that would be a very fast transformation indeed.

I think he's gone the way of Bregan.

If they release a Griffon expansion or include them in a DA2 then I'm gonna have to roll up a new character that looks something like this...

Unfortunately, I've realised that none of the Origins really fit well enough for it at the mo, so Bioware I need you to make a Brian Blessed Origin, thanks!

I hate it when writers can't let a character die. It robs the story of all drama.

That was an awesome game.
Celes waking up alone on that island... good drama. Nowadays people would turn that part into an expansion.

Except that they've already let numoerous characters die, both in Dragon Age and in their previous games. It wouldn't surprise me if he was alive, they definitely left it a loose end. I also don't assume that it will be cheesy JUST because he's alive, give the story and writers a chance to justify it. Assumptions like that are pretty ignorant imo.

Failing that, it's a good thing Flemeth was around to save you and Alistair...of course, she very likely wouldn't have saved anyone else...right? right?
..
On the bright side, Duncan could come back completely dead and still give us 40+ hours of content brought to you live from the Fade. Ain't imagination grand?

There are no assumptions in what you quoted, simply stated opinions.
And the fact that they have let characters die, does not mean that a return of Duncan would be good.
Of course I don't remember Bioware having started another endeavor as big as the creation of the Dragon Age IP. So there is no real relevant history to base any assumption on.
The concern about a returning Duncan is a valid one though. The trick of "leaving it open" should not be used too often. And the more characters that are assumed dead turn up alive, the higher the risk of loosing the audience's trust. The storyteller chooses what information the audience has and thus must always be careful when reversing what his audience might very well be regarding as fact.
The other danger of course is that of creating superhuman characters that can easily end up trivialising any threat in the tale. Especially in a game, npcs that are too powerfull, can cast too great a shadow on the player and raise the question: Why am I needed?
That said, the whole thread is speculative. We will have to wait and see what awakening and the future bring. But calling one side in a yes/no speculation ignorant... bad form
