well, because there is no body and lack of darkspawn body's, and the gurlock thing raised that ogre, i reckon/want to happen, that the darkspawn made him one of them, and in awakening you fight him as a boss, get Duncan's corrupted dagger and sword, and he...armour dun dun dun...! after you kill him there is a short cutscene where he gains his old memory or somthing, that his 30 years are up and he is going to the deep roads to die like a true gray warden but then...just dies and alistair screams and starts crying and you drag him out by the coller and he kicks and scream!

What part of an axe wielding darkspawn bearing down on him didn't you get? LOL j/k. No he isn't still alive he died. Sorry! Let's go bury him in highever together shall we? Heh, I had kind of hoped he might be alive to, but the more time passes the more I think that just might get Alistair and I in a whole heap of trouble. "What?! You're both still alive?! How is this possible?!," says the man who is suppose to be dead himself. lol

The look on his face in the opening movie shows the agony of defeat. It really looks to me that he had given up hope of winning the battle and staying alive. Alistair will tell you that Duncan started getting the really bad nightmares, the ones that usually have the GW heading to the Deep Roads. He is either dead or wishing he was dead. I don't think we will see him again, least not as the Duncan we all know.

My guess, in the trailer for Awakening when the Architect says "so you're the commander of the Grey Wardens," that's a flashback of him talking to Duncan. The Architect sounds surprised, like he knows who he's talking to, and he does know Duncan from the books. It's possible the talking Darkspawn is him.
