Dual class Thief/Mage

A thief/mage sounds fun to me in theory (backstab! disarm traps! set gibberlings on fire!) but I don't know really where to begin. A very good FAQ/Walkthrough I remembered using seems to think the swashbuckler is the kit to go for when going for a thief/mage dual class. But the loss of backstab when using that kit seems a big loss, backstab has always been in later games I played to be such a fun part of the rogue classes that I don't want to lose it.
I guess what I'm basically wondering is if a sneaky thief who can use some spells to blast things when combat gets hairy viable? And if it is, how do I build it?

So to do this, you will need 15 DEX minimum (though likely it will be max ), be human, and also minimum 17 INT. The higher level you dual, the higher your backstab multi-plier. Also, what thief skills must you have? The more you want, the higher level it would need to dual.
Dualing at 9 would allow maximum HP for your thief/mage (e.g. using D6 instead of D4 for HP), and I think it's 4x multiplier, which is pretty good. Personally, I probably wouldn't even kit (e.g. unkitted thief), though I understand if you want say a bounty hunter trap.
But the best advice I think I can give is to do what is fun for you!

Thanks. I won't bother with a kit and focus my skill allocation on the sneaking skills with a secondary focus on opening locks and using another thief party member (Yoshimo and then Imoen after I get her back?) to disarm and find traps. I'll be playing on normal difficulty so hopefully I won't be getting to battered. Any other advice is appreciated if anything I wrote seemed badly thought out.
Just booted up the game and played around in the tutorial, nice to hear that old launcher music again.

Basically for powerful groups of enemies, you will probably range attack/cast spells, can backstab if lessers. You will be able to do many of the fights all by yourself once you get the haste boots from the planar prison. E.g. backstab, run into shadows and repeat. But you will be also be able to use mage invisibility to repeat backstab as well.

I'm really not much of a fan of dual classing. It probably depends how well you handle delayed gratification.
A Thief>Mage is just a mage with some extra abilities and more hit points. Uber-powerful in the right hands to be sure, but not much of a thief. Also, once you have taken all the spell HLA's, there's nothing to do but take another 'craft potion' HLA. I mean really, 'craft potion'?
However, if you go this route, skip open locks in favour of detect illusion. This will remove invisibility, and even mirror image. I would personally dual immediately in the first dungeon, but I suppose you start at level 8 with 89k XP, so waiting until level 9 at 110k XP is not so arduous.
I prefer a multiclass mage/thief. Your thief skills and backstab multiplier keep progressing, once you max out the mage HLA's you can keep picking thief HLAs. Also you can choose a 'short' race for the saving throws, and if you choose a gnome, you even get the illusionist kit.
Of course, a pure mage or mage dual will be a stronger caster, so I would take one of those in the group as well.
This is OK, you can never have too many arcane casters.

I'm sorry, I like Terry Pratchett as much as the next chap, but I'm pretty sure he never said that. That's Douglas Adams through and through?

I've never tried it myself, so don't know how viable it is.
I actually agree with the potty, but do what you like and enjoy.
It doesn't even matter if your character isn't the best. Just have fun and try out different combinations.
I've been doing that for decades and still haven't tried them all!

It's definitely Pratchett, on the very first page of Lords and Ladies.
"Much human ingenuity has gone into finding the ultimate Before.
The current state of knowledge can be summarized thus:
In the beginning, there was nothing, which exploded."
Adams probably wrote something similar.
Thanks for all the suggestions. I got a good idea of the pros and cons now for dual classing etc.. I'm better off not thinking over my choice to much once it's made, I've done that before and ended up restarting games over it.
