A whole bunch of quest progress disappeared

Casavir has just joined my party and my next objective is finding Logram's lair, but it seems a lot of my progress disappeared after my last save. I went back to Neverwinter to see if Issani showed up there, and to my surprise all Captain Brelaina had to say was "You have your orders, Lieutenant. The smuggling operation in the Back Alley must be stopped." ......that was a LONG time ago! Then, when I tried to leave the city, the Old Owl Well and every location after that have disappeared.

What do I have to enter into my console to restore everything that disappeared so I can move on? I know I can do this without restarting; I've "completed" glitched quests through the console before, but I have no idea what commands to use.

See.

- if it's worse than that, pretty much start a new game or learn the toolset, or

...

brelaina has been turning up in my PM a lot recently. I wonder if the GoG edition has something funny going on there ......

Yeah, I saw that other thread. It doesn't help with my issue.

I'm not entirely sure, since I haven't experienced or investigated myself, but global variables always seem to be involved in these cases. The OC and maybe one or more of the expansions track quest progress using global variables, and for some reason the global variable file is not getting saved. Some have suggested it has something to do with how you installed the game, or virus scanners preventing a file being written, or administrator permissions...things like that. It's hard to say.

By contrast, I'd guess that the majority of player-made modules don't use global variables to store quest progress, since there are other (and I think better) ways to do it. Perhaps you could experiment by playing a module, instead of the OC?

read up on the permissions issue here:
Possible Fix for save game writing/loading Map Way Points Dissappearing
more: Stuck at bandit Camp

Brelaina's state should be "100" if you're on the OOWell quest but it's not completed yet. (note i added console commands at the bottom of the thread ..) She should say "Welcome back, Lieutenant. Do you have anything to report?"

I changed Brelaina's state and that fixed her conversation, but the OOWell and other areas are still missing from the map, so I can't really do anything. I tried changing the permission settings for all the .exe files, but I don't really have any way of finding out whether it's effective. My other character's progress is saving correctly, but that one hasn't gotten to Neverwinter yet.

I have a feeling Brelaina's not the only person who's messed up...I imagine everyone in the missing locations will be screwed too?

I don't want to start all over again...

i really have no idea ... and unfortunately I don't know what areas should be visible on your worldMap ..

but it's easy to bring them back, if only to see whether your current game is able to continue. The command goes like this (same debugmode 1 & all that )

rs ka_hotspot_show("1302OldOwlWell")

Here are some other ones, taken from my save *after* OOWell. Sometimes the game just fixes itself, though, so use your discretion:

"1202willowinn"   - Weeping Willow Inn
"1206Lizard1"     - Swamp Cave
"1209FortLocke"   - Fort Locke
"1211Graveyard"   - Graveyard
"1214BanditCamp"  - Bandit Camp
"1217Highcliff"   - Highcliff
"1218HC_Castle"   - Highcliff Castle Ruins
"1100harbor"      - West Harbor
"1303Bonegnasher" - Bonegnasher Clan
"1308Ironfist"    - Dwarven Scouts (?)
"1225widow"       - Dwarven Scouts (?)
"1314Eyegouger"   - Eyegouger Clan
"1001flagon"      - Docks District
"1120whruins"     - Swamp Ruins
"1040sky"         - Skymirror
"1013merchant"    - Merchant Quarter
"1208ShandraFarm" - Shandra's Farm

Something occurred to me. It's a shot in the dark, maybe, but we'll see.

There have been times while playing certain modules with very large areas, and also in Storm of Zehir, where I apparently ran out of memory. One of the things that let me know when this was happening was that some textures started showing up missing.

If I saved my game any time after that, or even before I saw the signs manifesting themselves (could happen just before I was about to save and quit) the next time I loaded, the game would say that the module couldn't be loaded.

When I started looking inside the save folders themselves, I saw that the module files were actually missing. Running out of memory apparently prevented the game from saving all of the necessary files in the save folder. I was able to fix it and continue by copying the missing files from an earlier save folder into the latest save folder.

The globals.xml file is a file that's saved in the save folders. Perhaps the game failed to save it at some point due to running out of memory? You might not be able to check this, because even if the globals.xml is in your latest save, it might be a newly-created one if you did anything that made the game store a global variable before you noticed your progress was missing. I don't know how many different saves you keep, but see if you have a saved game with a larger globals.xml than your latest save, and try copying that into your latest save.

Alright things look good so far. I've got all the locations I need and as far as I can tell the NPCs are giving my the appropriate conversations. I'm not quite sure whether my encounters with Cassavir and Grobnar are recorded properly, though. When I went to the OOWell it sent me through the place where I met Grobnar first. Not sure if this will cause problems later...

Is this after trying what I suggested, or what kevL suggested? Was the globals.xml missing, or of a smaller size than earlier ones, or neither? It'll be useful to know this information for questions from future players.

If mine, then I would guess that the older globals.xml was from before you had met Grobnar, and there may be other globals that need to be reset on that file that you'll come across later. But I'd guess that as the game progresses, it doesn't need to look way back at things that happened near the beginning, and just deal with newer globals.

Unfortunately I only had one save file(somehow I didn't learn my lesson after the first couple major bugs I dealt with, but I've definitely learned it now!) so I had nothing to compare/replace my globals file with. I took a look at what's in the file, but it's hard to tell if it's missing anything. There are some names I expected to see that aren't there, but I'm not sure what the file is supposed to look like at this point.

But everything seems to be working fine now. I'm quite surprised. I saved the emissary and moved on without any issues.

Well, then I'll leave the question open for any future players who may come across a similar situation. As for current matters, I'm glad your game is working.

I have never seen such a game for this. I am early in the game, and I've already had to restart twice because of gamestopping "NPC forgot you already completed that quest" bugs.

First Daeghun forgot that I had fetched the shard and wouldn't send me to Neverwinter. Had to restart.

Then none of the people at Fort Locke would put the next quest areas on my map. Had to restart.

And then this last playthrough which is finally working, I spoke to Commander Tann at Fort Locke after rescuing him from the graveyeard, and he talked like he was still imprisoned by the necromancer and joined my party to be "returned" to Fort Locke where he was already standing!

Luckily in that case he left the party the next time I re-entered the fort and everything went on as normal. But I'm going to be pissed as hell if something like this stops my game after I've put forty hours into it instead of five.

I'm now preserving a save from right before I enter each new area. Hopefully that will be enough to work around any future problems.
