and I don't mean the default Soldier Shepard. I mean your idea of Shepard. Is he a Sentinel who lived out in the colonies? An Earthborn Vanguard who had a troubled past? A Spacer Engineer who worked on ships all his life?
When you think of Shepard, what class do you associate him with?

Adept. Shepard is one of the greatest human biotics; almost as powerful as Jack and with plenty of control.

Her.
Vanguard, despite the fact that for the most time, Shepard forgets about being a biotic.

The funny thing is, I do think of my Shepard as the human soldier. In my head cannon, he is the son of a highly decorated, highly respected officer (his mum), and growing up on the starships, he felt that he was languishing in her shadow, never able to be the man she - and everyone else - wanted him to be because of his lineage. She told him all the wise stuff (yada yada) and he never really realized what any of it meant until the day he had to fend off the hordes of Batarian slavers...his rite of passage that changed him from an under achieving junior officer squirming in his mother's shadow, to a man. Horribly cliche, but hey, I like it.

I play a Sentinel, but I think of Shep as an engineer.

Earthborn/War Hero Soldier, even though I prefer the Vanguard class.

I used to think of him as a Paragon Soldier who was scarred by Mindoir, encouraging him to "hold the line" at Elysium against Batarians to make up for what he deemed as his "failure" to protect his loved ones at the colony.
I now think of him still as a Paragon War-Hero Colonist, but as an Engineer.
I like to think that he was a bit of a geek at school, particularly at sciences and Omni-Tech (which is what I like to think is the subject that teaches kids about OmniTools). He always had a habit of toying around with his Omni-Tool, even experimenting with launching incendiary blasts and overloading electronics. It was these modifications that allowed him to fight his way to safety when the Batarians arrived, although he couldn't reach his family. Then you have the whole "make up for my mistake" bit at Elysium again.

Soldier.
I went with that as the class on my original playthrough, and stuck with it as my canon. It just fits best with cutscenes, where Shepard doesn't really display any biotic ability. I kind of felt like the unofficial canon is that Shepard was a soldier, and decided to roll with it.

Earth born war hero vanguard. Basically a specialized soldier. I would accept a soldier as cannon, too. I just like the biotic "spice" that a vanguard adds to a soldier class, though.
High risk, high reward. Makes a good hero.

This
Soldier in Me1 and my headfiction makes me believe Cerberus installed biotics into Shepard during Lazerus. Thus she becomes a Vanguard.

It depends on the shepard really,
I couldn't imagine Eveline Shepard as anything but a Vanguard, while Isabell Shepard as anything but an infiltrator doesnt feel right.

A Colonist and Earthborn mix, both Ruthless and a War Hero, and a master of her biotic abilities, characterized by skill more than just power.
So not a standard in-game Shepard but one of my own creation.

I see Shepard as an Earthborn and as a Sole Survivor. He's a Soldier, no biotic ability or advanced tech ability. He's got the Sheploo appearance and his first name is John. His romance is with Miranda. I can't envision Shepard as any different than the default Shepard. Male Shepard anyway.
As for FemShep, I'm a bit more lenient.
I envision her as having the default appearance (Red Hair, Green Eyes) and name (Jane), but I would say her background is Colonist and her profile is War Hero. She's an Adept. Canon LI would probably be Kaidan. Or James, if I could do that. I think Thane has the best romance though.
