When you think of Shepard, what class do you associate him with?

Done a few Shepards, and for some reason the female Vanguard (the only femshep I've done, actually) is the one I enjoy playing through the most and the one I like to consider my 'canon'. Went with Colonist and Ruthless backgrounds, which could have been really interesting if Batarians got more relevance, but alas. She's mostly renegade, with some touches of paragon, so she's a little harsh, sometimes mean, but ultimately not a bad person, which is how I feel Shepard really should be. Too much of the good guy stuff doesn't work for the character (just in my opinion ofc).

She is an Infiltrator. :D

Though, I must admit...I'm thinking of having her switch to be an Engineer after the Lazarus Project.

All default customization/ultimate paragon w war hero & spacer. My Shepard is a soldier, but he is a vanguard in an alternate reality. Both have Kaidan/Liara as his LI, but he likes biotic booty only now. I feel bad for cheating on Liara, especially with LotSB installed.

I always thought of my default Shep as an earthborn war hero Soldier, since he seems to forget what a biotic even is in conversations

This is the problem with having multiple Shepard's each one has it's own class I associate her with.

There's my main Shepard, Sara, who is a vanguard (Colonist/Ruthless). Nadia is a soldier (Earthborn/War Hero). Silvia is a sentinal (Earthborn/War Hero). Lilith is an adept (Spacer/War Hero). Rhianna is the only one that goes back and forth between inflitrator and engineer, but I lean more towards engineer with her (Spacer/Sole Survivor).

Well, I'd use a process of elimination:

Vanguard or soldier - snipers and tech/biotic specialists who can't even wield an assault rifle don't really fit the "one riot one ranger" bill.

Spacer or colonist - what bothers me with Earthborn background is that I don't see how someone without any secondary school education would have the knowledge to go on to become a combat engineer.

Adept until ME3 where I gained a preference for Infiltrators...

She'll always be a Sentinel for me. I played also with an Engineer and a Biotic, but I played a Sentinel all the other times.

Not necessarily. Earthborn Shepard ran with gangs, there may have been someone in those gangs that taught Shepard things like hacking and decryption (which is extremely likely all things considered). Or Shepard may just have an affinity for technology. Also the Alliance will pay for education in trade for a certain amount of service time. Which is how Specialist Traynor got her education it could have been the same with Shepard. Actually, come to think of it the Alliance is probably where Shepard got her secondary school education since she joined the military on her 18th birthday.

That said my main Earthborn Shepard is a soldier.

I do have a little bit of a problem with a biotic Shepard with the Spacer background not ending up in BaAT like Kaidan since they are almost the same age.

Earthborn, Ruthless, either Sentinel or Vanguard.

Same, except Colonist.

This, though replace Sentinel/Vanguard with Infiltrator.

This, except Spacer, Sole Survivor and Adept.

:P seriously though, I don't think of Shepard as any particular class. Across the entire trilogy I've played all classes at least once. Doesn't matter so much to me in regards to who Shepard is, only for gameplay.
I do tend to play biotic classes the most, but that's not really because of how I view Shepard.

When I think of my Shepard. . .
She's Earth born. She was a war hero who proved herself on Elysium.
She's an infiltrator.
When you grow up alone you learn where to hide---and you learn what to hide.

I have more then one Shepard of course. But the one I most relate to is the one I mentioned above.

My FemSheps were Vanguards and Adepts - so a bad a** biotic is what I think of.

I think earth born, war hero, sentinel. my first run thru was soldier because that is what I thought shep should be. I can see vanguard. the sent has all 3 aspects, weapon, biotics and tech and I believe that to truly stand out he needs to all 3 (my opinion).

the adept is too biotic specific
infiltrator is jut too sneaky for an out front hero (what I think he is)
while the engineer was fun to play, a whole lota choice in fights to use, I just cant see it.

I only played one fem/shep run-through, the engineer. call me genderist, but I just see shep as a male

Exactly, since in ME 1, Shepard seems to not know anything about biotics, asking Kaiden and Dr. Chakwas questions he should already know the answer to if he himself was a biotic

Not even Batman?

My 'canon' Shepard ,the one I default to in my head until whatever I'm reading starts giving contradictions, is a male, spacer, War Hero Adept with a penchant for fully automatic weapons (aka the assault rifile bonus power in ME1 and picking assault rfiles on the collector ship in ME2).

He's also a full paragon who will Captain Picard his way out of every situation he can. I've taken him through all the ME 1 and 2 romantic paths, but I prefer Tali and sometimes Liara which I guess makes him a bit of a xenophile.

I tend to think of Shepard as one of the three combat oriented classes, Vanguard because Shepard is often thought of as a powerful biotic that isn't afraid to mix it up and uses powerful weaponry and combat prowess to compliment his powerful biotics, soldier because because Shepard is trained to use a large variety of weaponry to deal with any situation, and infiltrator because as a special forces elite operative Shepard is trained to get in and get out quickly and efficiently being a skilled tech that employs stealth and powerful weaponry.

Though they can be fun to play I tend not to think of Shepard as a caster class due partly to the lack of initial weapons training. It should be noted that I am currently during a trilogy with an Adept so I don't necessarily view these classes as "lesser" classes just not what I picture Shepard as.
