Hmm, I've just thought of something that's true for all of the alien romance options in ME2. They are all under considerable "distress" for lack of a better way of putting it. All very much people who desperately need someone to turn to for help, or is that just me? Someone earlier was worried that the Garrus romance might just be a "friends with benefits" thing and that all these romances might just be flings, but I don't think that's the case.
[!!!!Minor Spoiler!!!!]
Garrus even admits to Shepard in the game that she is the only person he respects in the whole galaxy. They have a "friends with benefits"-attitude going on in the beginning of the romance which probably stemmed from the fact that Garrus was very unsure and nervous (and that Shepard was either equally nervous or just testing Garrus), like treading on foreign and alien ground. One misstep and he could be the worse for it, while on the other hand, exploration could bring him both peace and joy.
And you know, they call it a "romance", not a fling. If you go down that path with Garrus, he'll stick by you to the end. He's like that, all Turian-y and loyal. Especially so to you, to Shepard.
