Since the Unification War, turians normally wear elaborate facial tattoos marking which colony they originate from, though it is not known which markings distinguish which colony. These are usually white - particularly on turians with darker carapaces - but can be various colours; Garrus Vakarian's markings, for example, are dark blue. As a point of interest, the turian term 'barefaced' refers to one who is beguiling or not to be trusted (note that Saren Arterius does not bear any facial markings). It is also a slang term for politicians. Link

Don't know how accurate it is since it's from the wiki.



I think the codex itself only refers to them as facial markings...so it's probably still up in the air. I was always under the impression they were tattoos, however, due to their cultural significance and purpose as identifiers.

I laways wondered why Saren looked so different to any other Turian...

His whole headshape seems different and he has no marking.

Because he's barefaced. :3 Think of the significance, both symbolically and not. Symbolically, one who is barefaced is not to be trusted. It's also a slang term for politicians. Now...Saren wasn't exactly the most trustworthy individual... X]

He might be different because he/his family line never hailed from one of those colonies...so perhaps an off-shoot Turian race?

Indeed. :3 That's why I said "symbolically." It has subtle significance for those metaverse to the game.

I also don't think most turians, at this point in their history, actively have a broiling hatred against barefaced turians or something...but they may very well be looked at with suspicion and some measure of distrust.  Saren becoming a Spectre has no bearing on that, however, because becoming a Spectre is about being chosen by the council.
