For me, when I use the Human Sentinel, Shadow, or Drell Assassin. That typically puts me in the first or second score spot. That's mostly the powers of the characters, though, and experience using them.
TGI/Harrier or GI/Hurricane both appear to be a fairly straighforward way to get a high score, but I wouldn't really know from direct experience.
LOLrockets on Wave 11 seem to do the trick, too. I don't use rockets very often for anthing but boss spam or sycnh/kill rescue, personally.
Or just be really, really good. That takes time, though.
My advice is not to worry about score, just worry about being successful all-around, and score will tend to come with experience. Most of the best players aren't going to judge you based on score, anyway, but on how effectively you help the overall speed and smooth execution of Waves and objectives.

Improve your aim - if you aim better, you will kill enemies faster, which means you'll have more time to kill more enemies.
Nuking spawns - if you get to a spawn before your team and successfully nuke it, only you will get the points for that, plus you will have more time to kill other enemies.
Don't die - by dying, you lose time and the less time you've got, the less enemies you can kill (see above).

1) Play well = Know how to aim for critical hits and be aware of surroundings.
2) Have all the "necessary" weapons, equipments and characters. This requires a lot of grinding.
3) Know the right combinations of weapons, powers and class abilities.
I think this forum has quite a lot of class based guides. They are a good place to start. I think over 90 % of the players with low scores have bad weapon and power choices. The rest just suck at the general gameplay.
But it should be noted again that individual scores really don't matter that much. What matters is how you help your team. For example Voluses rarely get top scores (at least when they are not recon mine spamming) but their Shield Boost is very helpful.

You do still need to know how to kill things very quickly though, as well as getting to the spawns first, which involves being able to predict them.
If that fails, bring armored compartments and go to town on wave 11.

Thanks for some solid feedback! I'm not concerned about score, but intrigued about what tactics, strategies, considerations the top players use/employ to be as good as they are. The differential between players is too large sometimes to simply be physical (reaction time, dexterity, etc). Just curious as to the mental aspects that give players an edge!
