Jeremiah,
Thanks for some solid feedback!  I'm not concerned about score, but intrigued about what tactics, strategies, considerations the top players use/employ to be as good as they are. The differential between players is too large sometimes to simply be physical (reaction time, dexterity, etc). Just curious as to the mental aspects that give players an edge!

Ok, this is quite a different thing from talking about score. Don't be misleaded by all the attention ****s around here: score isn't the way you judge how skilled a player is.

It's an indication, and the only objective one we have. That's the reason why everyone looks at it.

But it's so flawed that, honestly, it's just a general indication of how good that player is, nothing more. That is, IF they play the objective waves right. If they don't, no amount of scores matter, they're scrubs. The worst kind of players you'll ever play with, period. No skill in that.

So, provided that objectives are always the first thing on objective rounds, and that you understand that score is just an indication... I feel I can land some advices about how to kill stuff faster, which ultimately leads to the game being faster and you scoring more. I might not be an elite player, but after hundreds of hours of this game I can safely say I'm a solid player at least.

1. The first thing you need to understand is that there's no kind of defense in this game that works better than a good offense. That is, the faster you kill stuff, the less you're under fire, the less you die. The best offense is also the best defense. So, you should never spend your time in hard cover, waiting for your shields to regen. Well, almost never. There are a few exceptions. You should not because that's wasted time. You should always use soft cover and position yourself in such a way that you can shoot without being shot back. And, you should always use your time for either killing stuff or running towards the next thing to kill - there's nothing like "ok I'll hold my ground here and let them come for me". Nope. You go for them. Aggressiveness is the key word here. You need to rush the spawns and start killing the enemy as soon as they get onto the map.

2. Follows directly from the first: when building your character/choosing your loadout, always keep the offense in mind, not the defense. Shields, health, fitness... They're not important. So long as you position yourself correctly, you won't need them. There are a few exceptions, namely those character which needs to be played up close and personal, like vanguards. And in general, any character which has a hard time avoiding fire (like dodgeless kits). As a rule of thumb, you only want to invest into fitness and/or cyclonics ad shield cells if you either have no reliable way of avoiding fire or if you don't have anything better to go for.

3. Learn the mechanics of the game. I can't stress this enough. All the in game descriptions are either misleading or not tsaying everything. And I mean all of them. Not counting the enormous number of bugs around. You need to know how to get the best out of your character. To do so, you need to be on these forums. No other way.

4. Following 1. You need to learn how to predict spawn. When high level players play together, who kills more is pretty much only dependant on this. You need to understand where the enemy will spawn, based on the position of your teammates and you. Not much to say here, it's a matter of experience. Playing this game and rushing the spawns over and over again, you'll learn how to predict them.

5. Learn to prioritize enemies. The order in which you should kill stuff is: subbosses -> mooks -> bosses. You should always leave bosses for last, and never engage in combat with them unless you are forced to; or you don't think you can reach the other enemies before the rest of the team kills them; or you have no idea of where the rest of the enemies are; or, of course, if there are no other enemies around. If you rush the spawn and kill all the subbosses but the bosses are still up and not too damaged- you should run to find another spawn. Don't engage bosses.

Uh, that's pretty much all I can think of right now. Maybe I'll add something later...

Oh and... Inb4chinacalledtheywanttheirwallback

Good advice, especially point 5, I do that intuitively, thanks for the sum up.

Also, stay alive, Deerber!! xD

I don't know about being elite, but one thing I've noticed is that once the bosses come out, most PUGs ignore everything else and concentrate on the bosses, while I go around killing the sub-bosses and mooks. With the amount of time it takes to take down those targets, you could've cleaned up a hell of a lot more non bosses worth more points.

You do still need to know how to kill things very quickly though, as well as getting to the spawns first, which involves being able to predict them.

If that fails, bring armored compartments and go to town on wave 11.

I did this last night using a SI / javelin. I scored 175k and second place had 80k. If your in a group and people are dying alot, use this strategy, it's likely they are focusing on one target (happens alot in pugs)
If your going to nuke spawns waves 8, 9, and a cleanup after wave 10 objective is best

Thanks in advance for helping out the average Joes!

Try out builds until you find class and weapon setups that work really well for you. Not every setup works for all players. I'm rubbish with the N7 Destroyer and Demolisher. So I've stopped playing both of them a while ago.

You should be able to survive and deal a lot of damage with one of your good setups.

^^This.

SI sniper is one fine kit (same with GI sniper). I strongly agree -- I know top scoring players who always play an Infiltrator and shoot from across the map. They can shoot through walls and objects too, killing all the things quickly and without much danger. Dumping aggro on the team lets someone sniper down the enemies flocking to them. Since an infiltrator can cloak, it won't be a mook magnet, but it'll be a mook nightmare. Don't underestimate the power of invisibility and an uber sniper rifle :)

Course if you're the one non-infiltrator on a team of infiltrators brace for impact cuz you'll be taking all the aggro, but it's all good. You'll up your gameplay/skillset fast! And I would never say I'm elite, so take my opinion with a grain of sea salt. I just see what works.

Haha yeah I know.

I'm pretty good at being stupidly aggressive, if I can say so myself, pulling off absurd stunts and staying alive...

So long as I don't have any amount of visible lag.

Lag, even a little amount for the standards of this game, completely kills my gameplay cause I cannot (or better put, do not want to bother to) adapt my playstile to it. I still go on being as aggressive as I usually am, while I cannot afford that. And I go down plenty of times then.

That's what happened the other night, sorry about dieing that much

Friend of mine always concerned about score always focuses on the little guys and runs like a little girl from bosses. Kill fast, and use bosses as walking tech/biotic explosions.

Another good tactic is to pick classes that will mesh well with what your team is picking. If you want to be cheap, you can also use classes that have lots of "prime" potential. Detonators don't get point bonuses from kills like primers do.

In the end, its not about score, its about credits.

Am I the only one here who plays for the objective and tries to keep teamates alive? Winning means nothing to me.

One time in a Plat game with friends I accidentally locked everybody in while an escort was going through the reactor.

That's the last time I reload cancel with the spacebar. :?

I'm pretty sure most people here giving out tips don't care about the score. I certainly don't, but the tips I provided happen to be the smartest way to play the game given the way the wave budget system works. If it happens to be a high scoring tactic, so be it.
