Scimitar can stagger on what, Silver?

*Picks up gauntlet* It staggers well on Gold.

I filmed a couple of minutes of Scimitar Goodness. I'm no exceptional player, yet with my fragile Salarian and no shotty or ammo mods, you can see that the Scimitar
  • staggers reliably. Solo targets never have a chance.
  • shoots fast enough to take out a target even in a mob
  • Also gets a nice headshot bonus.
No, it's not a 3x bonus, but it's 2.5. And yes, most of the headshot kills there are on mook troopers, but it does just fine at pulping Centurions and Nemeses.

And it definitely doesn't do the damage of a Graal. Or a Wraith. Or even an Eviscerator. But it's faster: more than twice the speed of the Eviscerator, with more than double the magazine.

As a stunner or a finisher, it's marvelous.

But in those roles it is so heavily outclassed. Noone carries a 'finisher' gun. They need a gun that straight up has the kiling power, something which the Scimitar lacks dearly (Infiltrators make every gun lol). As a stunner it is severly outclassed too, by EVERY AOE projectile weapons (Falcon, Acolyte especially, Krysae) and as a crowd clearer the Piranha does an even better job.

It is bad. Both statistically and ingame. Also, faster ROF does not always mean better. Even though missing with each of the weapons is more punishing than the Scimitar, hitting with each of the weapons is miles more rewarding than the scimitar, a tradeoff I and many others are willing to make.

And on Gold, as in the video.

The first three kills show a good range. First is a Trooper, and I miss him with my initial shot, because he stands and spins as I get close. I'd likely have missed with my Graal, too, then finished him on the next shot, while it takes me two with the Scimitar. But those shots sure are fast.

Next, a Nemesis, two shots: shield-gate, then head-pop. It'd be the same with a Graal. Or Wraith. Or Claymore.

Next, a Centurion: three shots. Could have been two with a Graal, with the same aim. But he doesn't even get to point his gun at me, because he's stun-locked. Fast, and safe.

I do, on Vanguards and other classes that nearly finish with power (or with melee, like my AIU, who expected a Repair Matrix nerf but not a melee nerf, and now routinely leaves enemies with one health bar).

And those up-close kits don't want to wait for a Falcon or Scorpion detonation, nor necessarily to rely on one charged shot from an Acolyte. Those are all excellent medium-range stunners.

and as a crowd clearer the Piranha does an even better job.

The Piranha is a great weapon, with a fast RoF. Thanks to this thread, I've rediscovered it, and have been enjoying it in matches. But it's heavier than the Scimitar, and in class that uses a gun only occasionally, like my N7 Slayer, the Scimitar works better.

Yes, the Scimitar does less damage than other guns. But it's also faster than the alternatives, Piranha aside, and lighter. While it's a poor boss-killer, it does great on other mobs.  I love it even for Guardians - it takes me several shots through the mail-slot, but that's over in seconds, and thanks to the stun, they never have a chance to fire back.

Like others here,  I prefer the Graal on some kits, soldier-y ones doing most of their damage with weapons. But because I miss too often, I don't take my Claymore. That doesn't make the Graal better than the Claymore, or vice-versa, just weapons with different strengths.

The Scimitar is fast and light, and it stuns nicely while powers recharge. Good for the N7 Destroyer? No. For the N7 Slayer? Perfect.

You could probably outscore them using a consumable-less predator on a lvl 1 character.

Yeah, in me2 it was a great gun. In fact, only the claymore from me2 was good in me3. Locust, widow, viper, revenant, you_name_it. They did not like the me2 guns.

If they kept those weapon in the original ME2 level strenght then they would compete with the new weapons introduced in ME3. So, I think BW had to choose - as they definitelly wanted to introduce new weapons - either make the new weapons so strong that may trivialize the already so easy SP/or would be OP in MP OR dumb down the old weapons so there will be a reason to use the new ones.

Result is that there are huge number of weapons, few of them are really good for gold/plat games, rest is just manifest filler.

I hope in the next installment weapon design will be more serious, instead of producing a ****load of weapons, most of the underwhelming, rather make less but more balanced, differentiated in function not power.

I do. My Vanguards often need just one or two more shots to finish a target after a charge. My Paladin finishes fozen enemies on the ground with a simple shot. My AIU now often leaves a target barely standing after a melee attack, thanks to the un-requested melee nerf (the Repair Matrix nerf I understand, but melee? At least I have my Scimitar).

DHKany wrote...

From a distance, sure. But up close, after a charge, waiting for the Falcon to detonate isn't ideal. And you get one shot from an Acolyte, perfect as a planned shield-strippper but not, say, in the situations in the above video.

I'm not sure what else you want as stunning proof. You said it couldn't stun on Gold, and I showed that it can, reliably.

I believe you mean it has lower damage than other guns. Point taken.  If it were simply a weaker version of the Graal, it would be 'bad.' And the OP is right that it pales compared to its previous incarnation.

But it's also faster than the alternatives, Piranha aside, and lighter. And it has a generous clip. And it still stuns. And while it's a poor boss-killer, it does great on other mobs. Notice in the video that heads still go 'pop,' just like with the Graal. I love it even for Guardians - it takes me several shots through the mail-slot, but that's over in seconds, and thanks to the stun, they never have a chance to fire back.

I don't even know where to begin.
There is absolutely NO reason to take the Scimitar over any other shotgun in a game. Piranha is a better than it for CQC characters in EVERY way possible. Not to mention that AIU is better off just using the wraith for a melee build or something.

It still is outclassed. I watched the video, saw that it stunned but it doesn't do a better job of it. Ever. Falcon Airbursts so I don't understand what you mean by 'waiting'. CQC it detonates in your face and it travels fairly fast so staggering 24/7 should be no problem. Also unless you have godawful aim, missing with the Acolyte is pretty hard to do at CQC. Just hip-aim in their general directions and shields gone.

.4 weight more is nothing compared to the HUGE upsides the Piranha has over the Scimitar on CQC characters (the ones you described as being better off with the Scimitar because of weight). You can actually kill bosses with it, and even if thats not your cup of tea just take the Acolyte to efficiently strip shields to use PD to maximum killing potential.

Try using it on a non infiltrator/soldier and see how well you do.

All the other shotguns do great against mobs AND bosses. So Scimitar isn't really filling a role there along with he Katana to some extent.

The Scimitar fills no 'niche' or 'role'. It just sits in the garbage can.

I can fire it a lot and do very little damage, so there is that. I actually like it more than the Katana.

No fight here: I've seen DHKany's other posts and respect them. Same with Stikman's. I was just offering an alternative view, and correcting the misconception that Scimitar doesn't stagger on Gold.

DHKany wrote... Piranha is a better than it for CQC characters in EVERY way possible.

As I said above, that's a great weapon. And thanks to this thread for renewing my interest in it - I just used it in another match. But it is heavier. My Piranha III gives me 104% recharge, vs 200% for Scimitar X (yes, yes, different ranks - blame the dice). That's significant.

Not to mention that AIU is better off just using the wraith for a melee build or something.

Ohhohoho. Nice try. You won't fool me so easily about the Wraith.

I watched the video, saw that it stunned but it doesn't do a better job of it.

I don't argue that it stuns 'better.' Just that it shoots quickly and does stun. Enemies hit by it are controlled while powers recharge.

Good point about the Falcon burst. My issue with the Acolyte isn't missing, though I'm often amazed at my ability to miss. It's that charging for a second shot for another enemy is slow.

All the other shotguns do great against mobs AND bosses.

The Scimitar is weak as a boss-killer, as I admitted above. I was in a recent painful match with everyone else down and waiting for me to finish an Atlas with my N7 Shadow (another class otherwise suited to the Scimitar). It was very, very slow, and I could almost hear teammates tapping their fingers impatiently.

But that's a rare case. Shadow Strike is bugged against Atlases, and I'd otherwise use melee on a boss. The Scimitar is just there to carry my bayonet and to knock off Guardians.. a fine 'finisher.'

My bad I assumed you had Piranha X.

But still, the general consensus is that having a weapon that kills quickly but affects cooldowns harder is better than a weapons that does mediocre to no damage but grants 200% cooldown.

It has a pretty sound though; like you're beating mooks over the head with a bag of coins. There are times when I've chosen a weapon purely based on the noise it make.

Easy shotgun to do for the challenge... I did it faster than the Katana challenge. Aim for a the head?
