At the end of the Legacy DLC, you fight Corypheus, supposedly one of the original darkspawn that was sealed away by the Grey Wardens due to being so powerful. Obviously, you kill him but the ending suggests otherwise, implying he posseses Larius or Janeka depending on who you helped. However, this shouldn't be possible. The whole reason why Grey Wardens are needed to kill the Archdemon is because its soul hops to the next available vessel when its physical body is killed, allowing it to reform its body.
This is only possible because the Darkspawn are soulless, so it can fill the empty container. Grey Warden's still have their souls though, so when it tries to hop to the nearest tainted body, its soul conflicts with that of the Grey Warden's soul and kills them both. That's why it's gotta be a Grey Warden that delivers the final blow so that it ensures they're the one it automatically hops to.
Corypheus however manages to posssess a Grey Warden with no ill effects. Is there another slight retcon I missed?

Assuming that some kind of body swap between Corypheus and Janeka/Larius did occur, I believe it was a completely different deal than the body surf that the Archdemon does.
First, the Archdemon's soul transfer into a nearby darkspawn actually cause the vessel to transform into a duplicate of the dragon. Assuming Corypheus did take over Janeka/Larius, no transformation took place; s/he just remained the same Grey Warden as before.
Second, it's entirely possible that the body swap Corypheus pulled off was a trick he knew as a magister, and had nothing to do with his nature as a darkspawn. This isn't without precedent in Dragon Age; after all, it's said that Flemeth is able to possess her daughters. She may be a bit heartless, but Morrigan doesn't strike me as soulless.

Ah, thanks! This has been bugging me a while so you really helped me out here. I was pretty confused about it but what you said makes a lot of sense. Thanks again!
