"You don't want people to judge you, yet you spend an hour doing your hair and putting on makeup?”

Oscar Wilde on Emos.

Alistair does NOT do this, so he is not emo.

Problem solved.

Well, Alistair was very emotional about it, so I think the word Emo is tacked on quite correctly in this circumstance, although I doubt the OP actually meant it that way.

And BFF totally means Best Frog Forever!

Emo is short for emotional hardcore.  I guess kids use it in different ways now, but it's like how "punk" once meant more than buying an Avril Lavigne t-shirt at Hot Topic...

I can see things from Al's perspective, but he's being a massive tool. He thinks turning Loghain into a Grey Warden is a reward, when it is in fact a punishment.

He is a little emotional, but if someone killed your father/father figure, you'd be pissed if your friend was cheating you out of revenge.

In Germany, Emo means "A person with no self-esteem, few interests, no brain, bad style in clothing, ridiculous hair an listening to really bad music". Alternatively, "Emo" can be used in the meaning "F*ck off, idiot" or simply "A person I dislike".

I think the idea of being a Grey Warden can be very subjective to different people in Thedas.  Most people, even in Ferelden, seem to agree that Grey Wardens are a group of great warriors that has saved the world many times over, and I believe Alistair thinks the same way as well, that it is an honour and not a punishment to be a Grey Warden.  Don't forget that Alistair didn't know what the true price of killing an Archdemon is during the Landsmeet, while Riordan did.

If Alistair had known that a Grey Warden had to sacrifice his or her life to defeat the Archdemon, he would probably wouldn't be as bothered with the idea of Loghain undertaking the joining ritual.  After all, even Loghain himself expected that he would be making the killing blow on the Archdemon, after he survived the ritual and learning the Grey Warden secret from Riordan.

LOL Lady. So emo is emotionally hardcore. Wow, I consider myself a pretty well rounded person, doctor in rl, exposed to a lot of stuff.....and I have to be honest with you. I have nevr heard that expression.

Emotionally labile, unstable, manic.hypomanic.....but never emotionally hardcore.

I must be ridiculously out of touch. /pats self on shoulder

It probably refers to taste in music and clothes or something, rather than actually meaning extremes in emotional temperance... but kids these days, what do they know? ;)

Who says I was?  It's not like there's no option to kill him later.

I have little sympathy for Duncan, the Gray Wardens, or Alistair's idolization of both.

*sigh* It really confounds me how many people can't see things from Al's perspective. How about this: have you played as a human noble? What would you do if Al wanted to recruit Arl Howe?
Al lost his father figure and his brother to Loghain. He can't play nice with the guy. He just can't. And I really don't blame him.

Teyrn Cousland:  Actual father and grandfather.

Duncan:  Pragmatic Gray Warden who ropes people into joining an organization without full disclosure (like you'll die a few decades sooner than you should is not worth mentioning) and kills those who try to change their minds.  Has no use for people who are not Warden material.
Cailan:  A silly noble who met Alistair once and otherwise had no contact with him.

The only reason Alistair would get even 5% as broken up over Duncan+Cailin as the PC does over the Couslands is that he's an emotional cripple who latches on to the first person to speak nicely to him.

Wow, this, again?  I have answered this before, but I'll answer it again, if Riordan suggested recruiting Howe, I would.  As I said in the very first thread this was suggested, I'd distance myself from him, and feel all dirty, and be sure to sacrifice myself to the Archdemon, but I'd do it.  Of course, comparing Howe to Loghain is out there in the extreme, and it's funny that the HN origin can be used to ignore Alistair's whining, since Alistair will completely ignore the fact that your whole family was killed to whine more about Duncan.  Losing Cailan means next to nothing to Alistair, other than with Cailin dead, he might have to own up to his bloodline, and then you get to hear all the emo crap about that too.  Who do you think inspired the Kleenex box in my sig?

Which can be evidenced by any female PC.

"Emotional hardcore" *was* a musical subgenre of "hardcore" which was itself an offshoot of rock/punk.

Basically it was a way to label bands that played hardcore music but wrote lyrics about their girlfriends leaving them.

Nowadays *everything* disagreeable apparently can be labelled "emo".  It's much like using "gay" in a derogatory manner...it's nonsensical, but somehow fashionable.

Comment was directed at a general audience, not not just you :)

How can you not be sympathetic to Duncan and the Grey Warden's cause?

Ferelden comes first. Loghain is still a good general.

Probably not from Kings point of view..^^
Sry, but a general who might spontaneously decide, that the orders given him are crap and leave the battlefield  does noting other than deserting wich is generally seen as worst quality a soldier can have.
Usually a single soldier deserting does not convict thousands of people to death btw.

Must have missed the emo part of Alistair. Perhaps a new DLC?

Thanks TeenZombie. I enjoy learning new things. I had no idea the root for it was music,

I've officially decided I hate the term "emo" now. Not like I hate running out of milk with a full bowl of cereal, but hate nonetheless.

My goodness, I guess I'm just not a good little girl scout!

Killing darkspawn:  Good.
Tricking me into a ritual with a high likelihood of killing me and that will definitely shorten my life by decades, and planning on killing me if I try to back out:  Very bad.  Look up "informed consent".

My first character rebuilt the Gray Wardens because she was kind of a chump.  The rest intend to flip the Gray Wardens the bird.

So I take it you are the type who spares Loghain just to execute Alistair?

Alistair knew Duncan six months.  And was not with him constantly during that time -- so really, he knew him for a shorter time than that.

Well, if he's Fiona's son, it's entirely possible that Duncan would have come to visit him throughout his childhood.  The game doesn't explicitly say that Duncan and Alistair never met before he recruited him.
