Best Sci Fi story in any game I've ever played.

Its a Crunchy bit size rpg.Just long enough to be good and engaging, not long enough to make the thought of replaying it horrid.(its one of the small handful of games that I can replay)Most digital downloads will run you 20$.Physical copies might still be around.

You haven't played it? Good god Skellimancer, how could you even say that?

Game references aside you can find it dirt cheap nowadays for either platform... honestly GO BUY IT, there is no other option.

Heh, that might be my favourite line of the whole game. I feel so deliciously evil when my Shepard gets that comment.

Its a very good game with some moderate flaws. This is Bioware's first effort with a console-first game so to speak, that is fully voiced and using the Unreal 3 Engine and I think it shows. The character interactions are pretty shallow and there are some technical issues (at least as far as the 360) and at times I think the combat system can fall flat on the hardest difficulty setting since enemies using immunity makes it a bit of a chore, that and the vehicle sucks at times. I find the story good but ultimately not to deep, only barely exploring some of the more interesting ideas it brings up.

All that negativity being said Mass Effect is still better than 90% of the other games out there.

I also think the sequel looks to be fixing ALL of these problems.

Mass Effect has a lot of flaws, admittedly, but its material and presentation raise it above them all. That's probably the most concise way I can put it.

A good game, but not in the same class as Dragon Age. I found the story lines a lot more cliche and linear - the word 'marine' should be henceforth banned in all Sci-Fi

How was it?

Great.

I think that says it all. I had not be so enjoyed by a sci-fi game for a long time before Mass Effect.

I would say Mass Effect was a great game marred by a few flaws.

There was some graphical issues and some of the side-quests were samey. Inventory was annoying at times. However, in spite of this, the game was incredible for what it was. A good space opera RPG.

It's cheap. I'd get it just in preparation for ME2.

It is a great game and all the positives have been mentioned but there are a couple of things that can make replaying it tedious...

1. The "Citadel" level early on takes forever to get through and when you've played it once, there isn't much new there.

2. Most of the optional planets are the same, very little diversity in what you can do.

3. Maps for facilities/bunkers are re-used over and over again on planets.

But as a whole, the game is a great experience, especially for just one or two playthroughs. The sequel looks even better. :)

Personally I found it to be a very rough start. The combat didn't feel natural or easy to get into and the RPG elements were awfully shortchanged and seemed to have had the wrong priority. You got a bazillion tons of weapon and armor upgrades, but the "relationship" with your party ended up being 4 conversations and then it was done - even the romance.

And the side missions are in a word - horrible. It's just the same two locations re-used over and over again, with your only real objective being to mow down whatever bad guys are in there for some extra XP and credits.

If you really want to try Mass Effect 1, I would say, try to remember you're doing it to set up your savegame for Mass Effect 2.

hmm, that is interesting, I remember thinking Dragon Age was a good game, but not quite in the same class as Mass Effect :P agree with you on the word "marine" though, agree very much

like, DA:O had a way of looking massive but turning out to be much smaller than it looked, it did work as a spiritual successor to the Baldur's Gate series (I was often reminded of BG2, in fact) but BG2 ACTUALLY had that kind or massiveness (or rather, pulled off looking bigger far better:P) and with the DA:O characters I never really felt entirely comfortable and secure that they had my back, except the three I nearly entirely agreed with (though I guess the unease was maybe an intentional part of the game's dark tone, it did fit right in) I didn't like being forced to use just those three if I wanted my decisions supported and moreover if I wanted other characters to not DISLIKE me. grrr

I do know that much of this is partly-entirely a function of DA being a fully fledged 3D action adventure RPG, meaning less disc space for length and more development time on the infrastructure and that you couldn't really do anything single player with BG2's scale in one game and in a normal development cycle nowadays, so I'm not complaining, I do love Dragon Age dearly.

If you decide to pick it up...i would suggest PC over xbox. Usually its just a matter of preference but with ME1 PC came out a considerable amount of time later and they made some good changes. A lot of gaming sites rated the PC version slightly higer than console.

Does it have many decisions like that? i like hard choices.

Some...but not to the extent that trailer might have you believe (Heck, that particular quest/choice shown in this trailer isn't even in the game). I also disliked that there is very little party banter in ME1...that part was always the thing I liked most in BW games.

...still it was a very good RPG and ME2 seems to be much improved in this regard. Definitley looking forward to it.

Mass Effect is the best 3D game I've ever played (and I've played nearly all important PC RPGs since Fallout 1). Only BG 2 could create a comparable atmosphere and immersion. And yes, ME offers you real decisions with different outcomes. In most other RPGs, including those from BioWare, most dialogue choices make no difference. In ME, they most often do - and better yet, with the fantastic movie-style cutscenes, you usually get to see the results. What I like best about the game is that your PC has his/her own (perfect!) voice and for the first time ever really participates in everything that's going on.

Main story=great, great dialogue, sweeping interesting, good characters, variety, cool worlds. Mako quests and planet exploration=suck, repetive, annoying, crappy maps and barriers, ick.

But surely the side quests aren't as bad as in DA, don't you agree? At least we got some kind of spoken explanation why we're driving around on any planet, and usually a conclusion as well. In DA, we get a chantry board. <_<
