Let me put it this way - if you go into a party that is packed with people and you see a dozen people you know all talking at once, will you go to the ones that you did not enjoy talking to the last couple times you met, or the ones you know the best and enjoy consistently? Obvious answer. Now, what if you had run into one of those people you had a lower opinion of before the party and found out they had really changed and had lots of interesting thigns going on? Well, then you might be more likely to fight through the crowd to go up and see what they are up to for the party.

Very good analogy, I think.

Call me paranoid (and yes, I am aware this sounds sensationalist), but I'm still worried the reveal isn't put this late by BioWare's will alone. We've yet to have any platform reveals for any nexgent EA titles, with very little information going on pretty much any of them. I'm guessing there's a deal with Microsoft that EA should first come out and talk about their games on MS events, or perhaps even have their games as timed exclusives for the Xbox 720 and PC.

EA in general may believe they'll benefit from this deal - and be right, too. But I'm not sure Dragon Age 3 is one of those games that would benefit from such. Instead the game could end up taking one for the team. I'd hate to see that happen since I want DA3 to be very successful and well-loved.

Rumours of an EA/Microsoft partnership for some kind of exclusivity on the new Xbox have been floating around for a while, so you may well be right.

Though Micosoft's recent statements just in the last day or so did seem to suggest they'd do the majority of software reveals at E3 (which is, after all, only a couple of weeks after the Xbox reveal), so it may be that EA won't do much at the Xbox event either. Time will have to tell.

EA's CFO responded to questions about their absence from the PS4 unveiling with:

"It was more about timing of our own slate as well as trying to maintain a good balance of power with all the parties out there and choosing when to unveil certain pieces of software. I'd say, between now and E3, you are going to see a lot of stuff, and we are going to chose with our marketing teams when to announce."

At the end of the day, it looks very likely there'll be a trailer at E3 anyway, so we should know more about console plans at the very *latest* by then.

I'm not dismissing Jimmy's opinions though. He has good ideas. It's just his delivery that irks me. Which is also why I (usually) read his posts. As for just not reading his posts... It's kinda contradictory wanting a board where people can discuss stuff openly (albeit respectfully) but wanting me to just ignore some potentially insightful posts just cuz I might not like the individual.

Also the ignore function doesn't work.

Lets take this to PMs then because I'm confused about a couple of things.

Jimmy saying that it's risky is (by my estimate) his hypothesis. I don't feel his comments are condescending or anything.

To be fair, it is a risk.

Whether there are proper steps and plans to mitigate that risk to prevent it from causing damage is the question at hand. But a short marketing cycle in a year that is going to be dominated with other video game news/promotions/press is a risky strategy.

One must always engage in risky actions in the pursuit of business, but, in this case, I don't find the risk to be a wise one or one that is easily mitigated.

Here's hoping for a gameplay trailer.

As long as it's not a Square enix style trailer I'm good.

I really want to see what's up with DA3.

Maybe Bioware is trying to cut out the 'fluff' marketing you mention. Maybe they are working with EA to create a shorter, but more focused marketing campaign.

I mean, for a person who doesn't already know about the DA series(and there are many people who don't know of it), what's a CGI trailer 8-9 months before release going to do?

It could potentially be more effective to saturate a 4-5 month period with so much DA3 info so people don't forget about it. So it's always in their minds and they're eager to play it.

this makes alot of sense. if you show it closer then some people won't forget it. and also theyhave a limited marketing budget so if they focus it very heavy into a short period is a better idea I think. also it will be at lest 3 to 5 months after the reveal until the game comes out. I think it is smarter cause people will stay hyped up for the game

This assumes, though, that people see such things immediately when they are released. Instead of weeks or months down the line.

You'll have the largest amount of initial traffic from people who are fans and are already the most likely to buy your game. But the trickle-traffic you see afterwards is your real target. The people who aren't dedicated enough to pay attention the same day a trailer is released are also the people you need to convince the hardest to buy your game.

I think we may get a trailer at the Xbox unveiling, but that's wishful thinking.

Definitely not all. Since you brought it up here I'll tell you here: thanks again for your support.<3

Looking back now though, are you still as against MP on principle?

I think, all things considered, it worked out well (in the sense that there was an unexpectedly huge community of people that formed around the multiplayer portion, which was high-quality and fun) - and the reveal and marketing did a good job of showing off the gameplay without being hyperbolic. I think many people were even pleasantly surprised at how much better the MP turned out than what they were expecting, or what they feared.

DA is probably a bit different, because perhaps more of its fanbase are harcore, oldschool singleplayer RPG gamers - but I really can't see a major problem if any hypothetical announcement is handled like ME3's was. The emphasis seemed to be on showing off the best and most interesting features, having clear and precise information available immediately to neuter speculation, and a lot of communication.

The singleplayer/multiplayer integration and the obnoxious Galaxy of War system were other issues entirely, but that's probably more to do with the overall design phiosophy.

I definitely still am. I don't play it, but if I did I believe I would enjoy it--but that doesn't make it any more acceptable in my eyes.

I would say that absolutely it worked out well. Doesn't mean I like it though.

The Deus Ex: HR trailer done by Square was actually a fairly accurate representation of gameplay mechanics and the general plot and themes.

Which is all well and good.

Now if they had some goddamn consistency in them then it'd be fine and goddamn dandy.

Sorry if someone already talked about this, but whenever the new DA3 game does come out, you think you'll be able to somehow import your past file ( even tho its coming out for the new systems), or will it just guess what happened on the past games? ... Havent kept up on the news about it, so not sure if they addressed any of this about the game yet.

i am hoping for a kind of not default gender trailer. It should show different looks of both female and male.

I believe they said that save imports can still happen, so I wouldn't worry about it.

I don't see why people care about this so much?

They made a big fuss about it with ME3. "WE NEED FEMSHEP TRAILERS!!!"

You guys already know you can play as a female character, why do you need a trailer to prove it or back up an already given fact?
It would be smart not to waste marketing money and just use the male protagonist(and no offense to the ladies here but I would say that a male protagonist DOES market better to this generation of gamers).

Sure, include screenshots of the female protagonists default apperance, but there doesn't need to be a whole seperate marketing campaign like they did with ME3.

Why does there need to be a second one? Why not use the female instead? I mean most fans of Dragon Age I would say wouldn't care one way or the other so it would come down to personal prefrence woudn't it? I mean I believe it was mentioned that women now make up 47% of the market and given that there is probably a good portion of men who would like it as well.

Beyond that though on a confusing emotional level I think it matters to people because it makes their PC more...real, it's not something I can explain, but I can empathize with the idea that my Warden is THE Warden

I think you're wrong with that statistic. It's way too high in my opinion.

I know the DA series has quite a large fanbase of women, but just go to any social gathering(of people 16-30)or whatever and ask all the male and females if they play video games. Probably 90% of the men will say yes while you could probably count on your hands how many women said yes.

I never play as a female in video games mainly because it breaks immersion for me, being a man. It's just hard for me to RP as a women when I have no idea really what a women would do in the situations in the game(s).

But that's not important, all I'm saying is a male protagonist is much more marketable than a female one and since everyone who has played a Bioware game before knows they can choose their gender so there's no need for a whole seperate marketing campaign like they did with Mass Effect 3. It's just marketing fluff. If you really need to see an official trailer of your preferred gender to make you feel better about your choice then....I don't know what to tell you.

I certainly don't feel better or like 'I made the right choice' because I saw Male Hawke in DA2 marketing.

Marketing is marketing. It's to lure people in who aren't the biggest fans of the series. Most people here would buy the game even if it had no marketing campaign at all, just a few screenshots and videos would do.

Uhh, guess you haven't been paying attention.

The DA series isn't a trilogy or anything like that. It's a new character every game.

You won't be either of those people, their stories are done(as protagonists).

Indeed. They said they have been looking at new ideas for the Import system and how it will work. We don't know any details, but I can categorically say it will not involve in the game "guessing."

Dang, I really need to catch with everything about this game. But kind of has me mad, because I was hoping for like a chioce thing, where you can choose to either be The Warden or Champion.

The 47% number is a (somewhat) accurate number. It was pulled from a ESA survey result. However, it made no distinction between mobile/social gaming habits (Angry Birds and Words with Friends) and more hardcore genres, such as a AAA RPG like the DA series.

That being said, many people DON'T know you can play as a female in Bioware games. Heck, most people don't know who Bioware is. In the wider gaming community (not to mention the general populace, who knows bumpkiss about video games), it is not common knowledge that there are games out there that let you customize your character's appearance of gender, that offer lots of different dialogue options and that allow for different outcomes or endings.

Your average person still thinks of video games as they were 20 years ago, instead of all the options they can provide today. Mostly that is because of crappy, terrible, misguided marketing.

Putting a woman on the box will possibly draw female gamers, but also possibly alienate male ones. And vice versa. Why not market choice? Why not sell options? Why not get the message out that your game can be many things to many people?

I have suggested (multiple times now) a trailer that doesn't feature anyone, but rather shows that you can play vastly different characters if you choose. A female archer, a male Mage, a sword-and-board warrior, a quick and nimble rogue... a trailer can show that the player can choose these things for themselves and market to everyone, equally and effectively.

That would be (in my opinion) the best way to do marketing. Forget about a set protagonist, of any gender or class, for the promos. Focus on the fact that you can be many different things and showcase this feature and you can market the actual product and experience that defines your game.

You also can only be a human. No elf, dwarf or Qunari characters.

Just laying all the bad news on you at once.
