Why does there need to be a second one? Why not use the female instead? I mean most fans of Dragon Age I would say wouldn't care one way or the other so it would come down to personal prefrence woudn't it? I mean I believe it was mentioned that women now make up 47% of the market and given that there is probably a good portion of men who would like it as well.
Beyond that though on a confusing emotional level I think it matters to people because it makes their PC more...real, it's not something I can explain, but I can empathize with the idea that my Warden is THE Warden
I think you're wrong with that statistic. It's way too high in my opinion.
I know the DA series has quite a large fanbase of women, but just go to any social gathering(of people 16-30)or whatever and ask all the male and females if they play video games. Probably 90% of the men will say yes while you could probably count on your hands how many women said yes.
I never play as a female in video games mainly because it breaks immersion for me, being a man. It's just hard for me to RP as a women when I have no idea really what a women would do in the situations in the game(s).
But that's not important, all I'm saying is a male protagonist is much more marketable than a female one and since everyone who has played a Bioware game before knows they can choose their gender so there's no need for a whole seperate marketing campaign like they did with Mass Effect 3. It's just marketing fluff. If you really need to see an official trailer of your preferred gender to make you feel better about your choice then....I don't know what to tell you.
I certainly don't feel better or like 'I made the right choice' because I saw Male Hawke in DA2 marketing.
Marketing is marketing. It's to lure people in who aren't the biggest fans of the series. Most people here would buy the game even if it had no marketing campaign at all, just a few screenshots and videos would do.
I don't think social gatherings are a good indication of whether women play video games to be honest. They're just as likely not to say anything for fear of harrasement, but let's not get into that discussion here.
The idea though is that a male character is more marketable, which barring any personal bias (because as a man who doesn't enjoy playing as a woman you have said bias) Dragon Age does have a large female fanbase so having a woman isn't so different as having a man. It ends up being personal prefrence because the fanbase is so split down the middle.
Players who know the game has the gender option care less about who shows up. Players who don't know are likely to look up the game if it interests them regardless of whether a man is marching through a trailer or a woman. Ofcourse there will be the, "Are we forced to play as a woman?" but that's not really that different from "Are we forced to play as a warrior or elf."
....
Alright how about this, How would it negatively affect you? We want to market the game not only to men but women as well. So in order to that they choose a female poster child. Old players come and it the trailer in and of itself is interesting new players come. I don't see the issue.
Whether female characters are less marketable is a bit of weird topic because we don't know because they've (the industry) never really tried to do it. Did having a woman on the new Tomb Raider effect sales? No...then how will it in an RPG where arguably the audience is even more accepting of women.
