I'd be more afraid that they spend too much time dwelling on the old game instead of trying something new and different. They should do it Final Fantasy-style and have a different story with different characters in a (preferably) different timeline, but keep the same universe.

I'm willing to bet it will either be a prequel or set in an alternate sort of universe, akin to what the Bioshock series has done. Priestly has hinted at something like that on another thread.

And if it's not.
Synthesis is canon.

Why not Synthesis? You can't have Destroy or Refuse as canon, since that would lead to things being dead by default. Remember starting ME2 without an import? It would be like that, but for everyone.
Since when means and ending in which characters being dead or otherwise absent in one story that it can't be used in an other story?

The Geth die in Destroy, but that death doesn't have to be permanent. In fact in the EC the Catalyst tells Shepard that anything destroyed can be rebuilt, in response to Shepard asking how the Crucible will affect Synthetics.
Assuming Destroy carries over as either one of three canon endings (Control, Synthesis, Destroy) or as the sole canon ending, the Geth faction can still be in the game. The only difference is that they wouldn't be the same individuals that existed prior to the Reaper War.
Refuse is guaranteed non-canon however.

they pick synthesis as the canon ending.
it's a prequel.
it's dumbed down even more for the pewpew-headshot crowd.
it's as bad as DA2.
it's a full-on FPS/TPS with no RPG elements (like GoW or CoD..even if I liked GoW)
They don't have a story planned out for the ENTIRE series (assuming it's a trilogy or at least has a sequel) so that it ends up being nonsense like ME3's org-vs-synth bs.
