Hello, everybody. I'm a new player (N7 in the low 200's) and I'm trying to figure out when I should jump to Gold matches regularly - and if I do, what classes work best when making that jump. Right now with certain classes (Slayer, Shadow, Quarian Soldier) I can solo Bronze matches and I am always useful to my team on Silver matches. Every once in a while I'll pug a Gold match, but it how well I do really seems to depend on what consumables I have available.
I've been trying to get the Earth Mastery challenge finished, and I'm a little over halfway done with it. But since I've been doing that, I've been spending most of my credits on Arsenal boxes to unlock all the N7 characters. Which means, I am very under-geared all the time. The only great gun I have is the Hurricane, really.
If I go in with a Slayer, I seem to be useful in Gold matches - but not a stellar teammate. Is it true I should be able to solo a Silver with a class before really going into Gold matches?
Thanks for the help.

My advice would be to make the jump with a team of friends who you routinely stomp silver with. That or get good enough to pretty regularly solo silver.

Optimal: When you can solo Gold wave 1 by yourself.
Minimum: When you can carry few Silver waves if you have to.
Reality: When you are N7:1 and has Avenger 1 equipped.

once waves 8 & 9 can be beatable without need for any consumables (gel, ops, missiles).
Same for the jump for gold to platinum. Waves 8 & 9 are the next difficulty's norm.

You can run gold with a lot of classes at level 20 who focus on power damage. The vanilla human adept, engineer and vanguard all can score pretty high with low cooldowns. Ultra rare guns at level 1 are (for the most part) the best guns you'll have until you level everything else up.

Level up your rare weapons and gears, and should use consumables.
I'd recommend buying SP, PSP, and Jumbo instead of Arsenal and Reserves.
SP and PSP are the most balanced packs as they equally give you gears, weapons, and character cards. (RNG still sucks though)

as soon as you have either a very good weapon on at least level V, or have unlocked a very good power user kit. Plus the skill needed to handle those things. Now, you will learn and get that skill faster on higher difficulties, that means you have to decide if it's worth being a weight for the other players in exchange for learning faster.
you will also need some backgrond knowledge, i.e. how combos work, how much damage weapons actually do (here ), and how much damage powers do (here ) for starters.
good weapons are those that do a lot of damage (see the first link) and good power users are for example the Human Vanguard (if you can handle him), the Batarian soldier and basically anything with grenades (if you have enough grenades (from capacity gear or from the map)), the krogan vanguard and all Infiltrators.
edited for better links. (what is BBCode, duh.)

I jumped up (mostly PuG play) when Silver was rather trivial and I had amassed some gears. I started with an easy class that I was comfortable with. I am pretty sure it was Drell Adept and Kroguard for the most part. Most adepts and vanguards dont need to have a sexy weapon to be functional in Gold. I am sure there are others but I tend to only play vanguards and adepts.

Early on I would focus on spectre packs. You get some useful silver level equipment along with gold and the occasional ultra rare.
In terms of when you should go to gold, that depends greatly on your class and skill level. I have done gold with an n7 level 20 account as a human adept or fury. Their damage comes from skills. So most weapons are just a bonus. I would stay away from things like the destroyer, turian soldier or juggernaut. They do significantly better with better weapons and equipment. If youre lucky enough to get an early grenade pack, plus 2 or more, you can really start abusing grenade classes like the krogan soldier, krogan sentinel or drell adept. Weapons always help, but those classes when spec cedar for powers need them far less than gun centric classes. Also, if you need some good teammates, and play Xbox add me. Always happy to teach and help others. ign: darkseraphim17

Soloing ability has limited value, I think. If you can consistently beat Silver without using many/any consumables, you should be ready to try Gold. Just make sure you use your best class with your favorite weapon and Level III consumables to start out.

I just did it. N7 rating means a lot less than your personal experience and the knowledge of several key tactics.
There's a topic on top of the board that collects tons of useful threads. I learned more from Lord Sirian's Intermediate Guide (40 min, but totally worth it) than I did from two hundred hours of trial and error. Learning to reload cancel, use soft cover, and utilize right-hand advantage is arguably more important than derping around with a Claymore X and still kissing the floor half the match.
Good luck!

I'd just play Gold and if you're always dying or getting kicked after a game and underscoring by a lot, then it's too soon, otherwise game on.

Pretty much this. It's your game so if you really want to play gold then do so. Just have some consideration for your teammates, equip consumables and use medigel/ rockets when necessary, as long as you try most players will be happy with you in the team.

when silver starts to feel like a joke, take a shot at gold.
others have said it already and it's true, you'll have a better time and learn more if you go in with experienced players at first.
just please use your equipment and consumables if you're puggin it, and get yourself up from time to time, and you should make friends fast.
please remember to get yourself up from time to time.
when pugs do this, i'm tempted to "friend" them immediately...

Make sure you play your best class, one in which you are not going to be on your face all game.
Make sure you equip one of your best weapons.
Make sure you equip gear and consumables and have medigel and rockets in stock.
Be a team player and help with objectives and try to revive.
If you do the above, even as an inexperienced player most teams will be happy to have you. If you ignore the points above when 1st going into gold you do so at your own peril.

I notice you're on PS3, feel free to add me if you would like some help. PSN = hostaman
So you have the Hurricane, and also the SMG recoil mod - a good combo for Gold.
The Asari Huntress is good for survivability. But I would advise a noob to use cyclonics or other shield buffs to start with, but you don't seem to have much.
Just give Gold a go and see how you do. By the look of your manifest you don't have enough decent weapons, characters or gear at present, but it's always worth just jumping in.
In reality you probably need more Silver hours to improve your manifest and get some experience.
I never kick, so if you fancy a go with someone covering your back, give me a shout.
Oh and the advice you might hear from some people telling you to solo Silver before you're good for Gold is rubbish. I played many Gold matches to extraction before I went solo in Bronze!

I suppose I should have mentioned some of my background in my post. I have watched that Intermediate 40 minute video, I've read several class guides and general advice threads. I've also watched some videos by Stardust (I think that was his name).
So I am trying to learn. I just remember on other games I've played how frustrating it is when mediocre players try to jump in the deep end of the pool too quickly.
I play on PS3, but I don't have a mic and typically play early in the mornings so I'm always pugging. None of my friends are online at that time, so I am 100% pug.

OP feel free to send me a friend request. You can play some Gold with me until you feel comfortable enough to play it with full confidence.

If you're handling silver on a consistent basis, you can make the jump to gold easily enough. Just don't go in naked(no gear or consumables). If you're a power class use a cyclonic to keep you alive longer.

When you're comfortable with the map layout. I recommend that you get a couple weapons up to level 6 or better for the fire power. Things a bit tougher on Gold.
start playing silver now.

OP, I just checked your profile ... I know the shine is all for buying PSPs for unlocking the top characters/gear etc. ... but you should consider focusing on buying veteran packs in the short term as you have zero uncommon weapon mods .. these various mods can be unlocked fairly quickly and will increase the effectiveness of you weapons (esp for Gold wherew the bad guys have more hit points and are more numerous) ... these are even more important than getting 1 or 2 levels on a pre-existing gun
You actually have unlocked several good weapons .. just need mods for them

Your only maxed out weapon is the predator; you have low gel, rocket capacity; you have absolutely no consumables, only a few gear and weapon mods, none of the maxed out ...
Play more bronze/silver and buy recruit, veteran packs to max out common, uncommon weapons and buy JEPs to get consumables.
