How about a half-wit as a companion?

Anyway, related to my previous post, perhaps we could choose one from a number of animal companions to function as a non-verbal companion. Ie., a mabari, a halla, a golem, a wolf, etc. You could then customise their appearance and combat tactics as you see fit. Maybe they change appearance depending on whether you are good or evil.

Rune Golem from Tevinter or Branka(if she knows how to forge them), but rather an army of them to crush Chantry with Templars

Comedic responses aside, any other thoughts regarding why this would be interesting for you?

If it doesn't involve much conversation and is lightweight in that regard, it seems to me to come across as more of a character that allows the player to have an NPC that is perhaps closer to a "generated" party member (i.e. a player created NPC). Which I can see some people liking. I am curious if this is why you would find it interesting.

I don't really know if I want to delve into the implications of a "half-wit" being akin to a "generated" party member. That sort of implies people with developmental disabilities don't have personalities of their own.

If you guys are looking at the possibility of a party member that is developed by the PC, then it would be better if it were something more like the Pawns in Dragon's Dogma, ie. a mindless automaton.

Make it a golem or some other kind of construct, or even a pet that the player picks out. There's another guy around here who keeps mentioning ghast companions; it seems to me that would be a good fit for what you're thinking, since ghasts can fill mutliple roles.

My point was more to the lines that the original suggestion alluded to conversations where the person simply states the same thing again and again. Unfortunately, I see that as quite a restriction to really developing the character if communication is restricted. Though I suppose there could be other, creative ways. This would still go against the OP's support which involves the character being "low cost," however.

Eh, don't read too much into my response in this thread. I'm more facilitating discussion by engaging with the fanbase, as opposed to revealing super secret information and knowledge!

I don't know about half-wit, but I wouldn't mind a companion that has mental issues, provided the character was well written and didn't come off as insulting, which is admittedly a hard thing to do.

Fair enough. My own two cents is that I'm not really keen on the player-generated party members UNLESS they're some kind of dog or cat or golem or frumious Bandersnatch.

How about a companion like Hodor (from ASOIAF) or that enchantment dude. A character that don't need much writing because all they do is say the same word again and again. I believe a character like that is low cost but they are nice to have none the less, just so there is more options as for the companions you bring along. Sorta like the dog but just a half-wit.

I think it would be interesting. What do you think?

Well we already had Merrill.

It wasn't a joke, she needed her mittens pinned to her chest.

In KotOR we have Zaalbar the Wookie, he don't talk much, a boring character.

Well, not only he don't talk, when he talk he just "grrr grr grr..."

How about a person who is treated as a half-wit because their anxiety disorder causes them to stutter?

Not really. Allen seemed to want the character to be intresting. So there it is.

You'll notice you never have complete half-wits in good stories. Because if you did, the audience would just hate them for continually screwing everything up. Even when you have a stupid character, they do some things right. Zach Galifianakis from The Hangover is a very good example.

'Never go full retard' indeed.

As a general note, if you think there's a very obvious joke and the thread is more than a few posts long, it's probably already been said.

OP, I think this would be a waste of a valuable companion slot. I don't see a lot of possibilities how such a character could be interesting. It's why I rarely take the dog along in DAO.

So... you want Hawke as a companion?

Wait, half-wit is being generous for him.

On a serious note, however, I can't say I see a problem with this, although it depends on how one defines half-wit. Do you mean mentally challenged? Do you just mean average intelligence?

Hodor?

I'd support a Hodor companion. Don't know why, but anytime Hodor says Hodor I laugh, even if it's a Hodor that shouldn't be laughed at.

I would rather have fewer but more developed companions. Just 6 companions instead of 10.

I think something like this could be interesting for that extra companion that serves as an extra warrior (or whatever class is needed). The extra companion could be mute like Ketojan or just have a more funny one note personality like HK had. He could be an interesting option if you don't like some of the other companions, but not a fully developed companion with lots of dialogue and personal quests like the rest.

Lets compare with KotOR , our companions are

Carth Onasi - a whiny republic soldier, maybe Alistair great great great grandfather
Bastila Shan - egoistic Jedi who have battle Meditation, turned into darkside later, maybe Morrigan sister
Canderous Ordo - a Mandalorian warrior, all tough guy, only know war, Sten cousin
Mission Vao - a talented Twilek kid, she can pick lock, pick up mines...Leliana little sister
Zaalbar - a walking carpet, don't talk just growl...Mabari best friend
T3-M4 - utility droid, only usable for open up SITH base door...Sandal best friend
HK47 - funny and charming assassin droid, Zevran step brother
Jolee Bindo - an old coot neutral Jedi live alone in the forest, Wayne ex-boyfriend
Juhani - a Jedi who think being fall into darkside, maybe a lesbian...err...

Out of 9 companions in KotOR, two don't talk (one growl and one tweet), one a whiny guy, one talk much and funny, one wizard of oz, one have bad attitude, one kiddies/girlie, one tough guy and one confused girl

Bioware have the very same type of companions in their games....

edit : We can see those characters in DA2...Anders, Merill, Fenris, Aveline...they all carry the typical Biowre companions characters
