Don't know if this is common knowledge or not, but,
if you agree to Kolgrims request in the caves, and then kill him at the top of the mountain,
another medium size dragon will join fight and drop the 6th dragon scale,
so you can make the superior dragon armor without having to defeat high dragon

Another drake will join. You can not get dragon armour with out killing the high dragon. You can have two sets of drakescale armour.

Unfortunately not.

You only get drake scales from the small dragons.

To make the better armor set, you'll need dragon scales which you can only obtain from the high dragon.

In my version, i get 5 pieces in the caves, and the 6th piece from this additional dragon,
whom i will otherwise not see nor fight.
And then i get a 7th piece when i kill high dragon,
i get the impression neither of you have first agreed to kolgrims request and then killed him
at the top of the mountain

I think the confusion is coming between drake scale armor and dragon scale armor. You do need 6 drake scales to get both sets of drake scale armor -- but then there's the dragon scale armor which you can only get if you kill the high dragon and get the dragon scale. The dragon may have an additional drake scale, but I don't remember.

Besides, you don't even need that Kolgrim's drake's scale. There are plenty of other drakes that drop scales, such as the ones in the mage tower right before Uldred and the one in the random encounter.

Never had a dragon scale drop in tower, never even met a medium sized dragon there,
only the small ones

In addition to the six drake scales you need to make the two sets of drake scale armor, I always end up with two or three extra drake scales.

However, there is only one dragon scale, and you get it from the high dragon. You need this to make dragon scale armor.

Whether the drake scale in the mountain top is your sixth, seventh or eighth piece, would depend on how thorough you had been inside the caves and some luck in the overworld map. 6 drakes can be found inside the cave itself, 1 as a random encounter, and 1 while busting Kolgrim's ignorant ass on the mountain top.

Also, as already mentioned above, killing the high dragon is necessary for the (superior or not) dragonskin, dragonscale or the dragonbone set.
