i don't actually need to know, I just wonder if it's a loose end that they forgot about or whether I will eventually find out...or if I need to play Return to Ostagar or something to find out.
Do we ever find out what happened to Fergus?

Yeah, you find out in the epilogue.
I really wish there had been a point before that where you found out though.
All the events of the game takes a little over a year to complete in-game. That's a long time of hearing absolutely nothing about what happened to your brother.

Yeah, but consider this. There's no modern technology to speed up communications, plus there's a civil war going on that will seriously delay or deter any messengers.
SPOILERS:
And considering your brother is in the middle of the wilds with barbarians, there's probably no one inclined to help him out by getting a message to your character. And at least the game provides plenty of options to gripe about finding your brother, particularly in the beginning of the game (prompting Morrigan to be as cold to you as she is to Alistair if you persist on bringing up Fergus).

meh, all the other origins got a bit more closure or homage to their intros than human noble. kinda sucks you have to wait until the end for yours - which I think most of the other origins get acknowledged for as well.
guess being made king/queen makes up for that, so I hope there's a lot more expansion for Cousland in awakening. more than just getting the props of a noble though (ie people just recognizing me without really giving a crap either way), I'd like more interaction with Fergus and the possibility of revisiting Highever.

I see your shwartz is as big as mine. Let's see if you know how to h-h-handle it.

That's one thing I wanted when Ali said Duncan was from Highever and I was a human noble. I wanted to either have known Duncan longer than Alistair had (take that, whiner!) or to at least be able to say something conveying, "I'd like to return to Highever, once we've killed Howe for his treachery and hacked down that pesky archdemon, to restore my family estate and search for my brother." You give no recognition during that dialogue that it's your home.

Except the part where you revenge your family by killing Howe.
