I think it might just be the default expression, but all the humans I make looks pretty tender, can't get no crazy hard glare out of them,  anyone have luck with this?

Give them a beard that covers their mouth, give them wide eyes, and set them to the angry expression in the portrait options. It should make them look both angry AND crazy!

I don't know... I think my human avatar to the left doesn't look all that soft. He has a little of that "you talkin' to me?" look about him.

Nice mage!  I am not sure if anyone would consider this soft or not, I see him as being farily rugged:

How about this guy? I don't think the name exactly fits, but he doesn't look like a "nice" guy.

I'd be curious about some female examples here for inspiration, but no "cheating" with the Expression slider, please, since that only affects the portrait and not the actual character. ;)

With my noble warrior there, I tried for a family resemblance to the Cousland NPCs. That works to my satisfaction. She's also supposed to look competent and strong and, well, noble -- think "paladin/champion" rather than "raging arsekicker" or "pretty lady". That, I am not overly satisfied with, however. The absence of makeup and a broader than normal neck, jaw and chin prevent her from being overly "soft", but there must be room for improvement somehow. Maybe a change of hairdo will help.

I tried to make my mage look angry.

Edit: Lowering the brows a bit can produce a stern face. And I obvsly used the emotion slider for my portrait.

Don't use the baby-face skin complexions.

I like the soft feminine look for my character.

But that's just me.

You probably need to make the jaw stronger, try giving a bit of underbite. I'm currently trying to upload a rather tough looking elf male. Not overly harsh, but he kind of reminds me of Jason Statham, like in the Transporter films.

Edit: Oh, and lower the brow.  If it's raised too much then they just looks urprised all the time.

Thanks for the input, and good idea on the jaw and brow.

He will be perfected!

I'm the only one who managed a tough guy without beard-cheat so far. I'm so proud of myself:wizard:

My guy, Declan, looks kind of soft, but that's the idea. He's a pampered rich kid. ::laugh::

I agree that giving him a lower brow, more of a square jaw, and somewhat of an underbite will probably help make your guy more rough. Just moving them around and changing the angle of the portait can help a lot, too.

IronFoe, your avatar is awesome. It looks like he's looking for more people to add to the buried bodies in his basement.
