Just for the sake of discussion, imagine you (aka, the Inquisitor) were offered the chance to rid the world of magic simply by blocking everyone's connection to the Fade. Imagine further that this could be done without the need for any sacrifice. Would you do it? Would you rid the world of magic? Why or why not?

PS: If this has been discussed before, let me know so I can ask a mod to close the thread.

Poll: Would you rid the world of magic?

That would be HUGE.

I'd need time to think about that one. Thats not an easy choice to make.

The only way to sever a mage's connection to the fade is to make them tranquil. Are you suggesting the option to tranquilize *every* mage?

yes, I would get rid of mages forever. Reason? I plan to play a character that hates mages and magic for my first playthrough.

As long as it didn't result in the destruction of the world? Yes.

The damage done by magic far outweighs its benefits in the Dragon Age setting. There would be no need for Circles and templars, and no one would ever die at the hands of an abomination again.

"Imagine" is the operative word. Imagine you could rid the world of magic without having to tranquilize anyone. If you could "flip a switch" and "erradicate" magic, would you do it? Bear in mind you can't reverse your decision.

I guess it would very much depend on whether or not I was a mage.
If I was a mundane human I might have more of an insentive to do such a thing. Magic can be dangerous, and demons even more so. Ridding Thedas of magic could prevent future destruction and devastation (although I'm sure people would find other things to kill each other over).
If I were a mage, I would be more hesitant. I would have to think about how ridding the world of magic would possibly affect me (other than simply being unable to cast spells). Magic would be an major part of who I am-  part of my self identity.
IMO I think mages have a deep intricate connection to the fade, and ridding the world of magic could affect them in various untold ways.

you can't do such thing no matter what,

fade with demons and magic would always exist and have connection with Thedas even without mages(but you cant destroy all mages and they would always born)

and you cant blocking everyone's connection to the Fade even with Tranquil

this is imposible to do such things and even if this would be possible all races will suffer because of this

I would. Without a second thought.
I'd be "shooting that pipe" before the Maker even stopped speaking.

From a non Qunari point of view, no. The people in Thedas are already too dependent on magic and have slacked in research. Just look at the Qunari, they shun magic and try to use it as little as possible. Doing so, they have gunpowder, sanitation, as well as more advanced medicine, just to name a few that come to mind. No magic would give the Qunari a powerful advantage and could easily mean Thedas being conquered.

Oh you make a very good point.
I wouldn't want to give the Qunari any sort of advantage in conquering and pushing their horrid religion on everyone.

Dwarves have no connection to the Fade, but yet they are not tranquilized, so it is an option....

Yes, but races who do have a connection could very well be affected if the magic switch were suddenly turned off.

Better Qunari than Tevinter, I say.
The qunari we can deal with. Non-mages were pefectly able to figth them to a standstill without the mages which were used to push them back.
With magic gone, thedosians have an even greater incentive to advance their technology which means gunpower, dreadnougths, etc.
I'd still rid the world of magic.

I think it would be more like

Press red button: destroy magic (and possibly all mages)
Press blue button: control all magic and everyone who uses magic
Press green button: make everyone a blend of ... mages and non-mages? lol

Could we face such a scenario anyway if Thedas's supply of lyrium runs out?

Press red button: destroy magic (and makes everyone a drooling mindless automaton)
Press blue button: control all magic and everyone who uses magic (statu quo)
Press green button: give magic to everyone (both Dalish's myths and Sanda's prophecy suggest this was true in the past).

if it means they are made tranquil then no way. if the magic is completly gone but doesn't hurt anyone then yes but I would prefer people not push mages into being prisoners and basically giving templars the right to do whatever they want. and yes a templar could do everything from rape the kill a mage and not really be punished. if they kill a mage they could just say I saw them using blood magic and then they are fine no trouble. they take the mages kids away which is sickening considering many of them would be good parents. I think mages should not be allowed to be in power but have more rights then they do. they should be given a lot more freedoms.
