This isn't a thread to make people who are for or against multiplayer feel bad, but I am interested in why many people are against multiplayer. Personally, I enjoy the inherent replayability that comes from multiplayer. Multiplayer also helps keep me in touch with my friends and family. Playing with friends and family is honestly the most fun I have with games. Granted, I don't really see multiplayer fitting into midevil games, but I do think that multiplayer works really well with just about any shooter. I don't see the harm in multiplayer, as long as it doesn't affect the single player experience.
However, I do know that multiplayer draws a lot of people away from a game. I'm genuinely interested for the reasoning behind this choice.
If you have an issue with multiplayer, what is it?

The extraction wave should have some epic music to go with it.

Adding a multiplayer feature to a singleplayer franchise doesn't only divert resources from making the singleplayer campaign better, it also diverts attention from the singleplayer campaign. What I mean is that the story simply doesn't matter that much anymore. If the story fails, the Multiplayer can still draw in sales and make money through micro-transactions. I'm going to predict that ME4 will most definitely have a Multiplayer mode or even be more or less entirely focussed on Multiplayer - especially after the debacle that ME3's ending (and by extension, its single player mode) caused. I find it very likely BiowarEA could make the decision to focus more on Multiplayer, as it is less risky and also because they've possibly alienated a large portion of their Singleplayer fanbase, anyway.
On the other hand, DA2 made a lot of fans angry and didn't quite draw in the amount of sales that Bioware games usually do. Because it would be too risky to trust in Dragon Age's name to draw in sales, or to go for a hypothetical target group again, they'll have to better their mistakes and try to rewin the fans they've alienated. With ME they don't have to do anything of the sorts and many devs have already more or less made it clear in passively aggressive tweets that they don't want to.
I'd also go as far as to say that at least one of the reasons why ME3 had a big, depressingly grim war was so the game could have a Multiplayer. But that's entirely theoretical.

People don't like it when you force something onto them and some just don't want to play with other people. It's simple as that.
I don't mind multiplayer or having online only contents. However, when it comes to multiplayer, it should only be incorporated as an extra or bonus to the game and not something you are required to participate and slave yourself for hours in order to get the "better" ending for a single player quest. That's like your Math teacher telling you can't get an A unless you also get an A in Gym.
The quality of the multiplayer content also matters of course. There is no point to play it if it's not fun or gets boring after three days.

Is it less about the concept and more about the execution then?

Because it took resources away from SP and makes SP suck.

Multiplayer was designed to generate revenue.
If it was never added to the game, would the resources have gone to single player or just not been allocated to ME3 at all?

Being tacked on. See Spec Ops: The Line.
Otherwise, nothing providing it's not being shoved into a previously single player series or, even worse, sucks.
