They were made more difficult quite a while back. Though, since they stopped supporting the game, nothing has changed.
If you were playing Collectors, the game will always seem like it's one difficulty level higher than what you're actually playing.

As stated, some extra difficulty was added some time ago. But some extra credits are rewarded too, so it's not that bad. Some PUGs can, in fact, make a match harder than if you went solo. Their level of ineptitude is just that daunting...

Waves 5 and 8 have always been the most trouble. Wave 5 is boss spam and wave 8 is the annoying unit wave.

Sometimes it feels like stuff is harder lately - I suspect because the servers seem to be getting more and more laggy since support ended - ?

Not really harder, but Collectors are significantly more difficult than their counterparts.
My advice is trying classes you have generally avoided. I started out playing Engineers and Infiltrators(I had every sniper rifle in the first 3 weeks, I wasn't going to not use them). After a little break and started playing Adepts and Vangaurds as well. Variety makes me better.

Sometimes anyone can just have a bad day & be off their game. Nothing to worry about.
Alternatively, like a lot of longtime players still doing silver pugs i find myself with squadmates with a lot less experience, low level weapons, and no consumables. They are not necessarily bad, but a whole pug full will make things harder. I don't mind that but sometimes it means you are going to wipe. Again nothing to worry about unless it happens all the time.

Lag, not rubberbanding, but enough to throw you off your normal pace
Counterproductive pugs, not always about them dying, but about breaking spawns, them going crazy killing stuff on objective waves, versus helping with the objective, etc.
Collectors, because in my opinion, in agreement with others in this thread, they seem to up the difficulty of any level by something approximating the next level of difficulty for any other faction
Using a kit/weapon combo that I am less skilled at or lacks synergy with the faction, map and teammates in a match
Having a bad day, sometimes it's just me really sucking in a match, no other excuse

Game is the same to me. I just am used to carrying pugs.

No. Throughout the course of ME3, enemies have been buffed and nerfed, but the actual difficulties haven't changed.
