The first shooter I ever delved into in earnest was Metroid Prime, and the only reason for that is that it came with my Gamecube when I bought it.
When I first started playing I thought it was a boring game with not much to it, but the more I played it, the more I realized how much detail went into the world and the lore, just about anything you can think of in that game had some kind of description along with it, dead bodies of Space Pirates would foreshadow what you'd be fighting in the coming boss fights, or they'd give insight on what happened to the Frigate Orpheon. The controls as well felt sluggish and slow at first but once you got used to them it felt super natural and super fluid.
I've yet to have a shooter experience that comes anywhere near that game, I also have yet to hear a soundtrack better, an atmosphere that engrossing, or lore that detailed.

Nope, I played all Halo's and Uncharted games along with resistance 1 and 2 and Transformers.
Then Mass effect came in to my life and I said, "My video game life is complete."

Call of booty no, but booty call I get sometimes. You should try bf3 if you want the SP to link with the MP.

I think I vaguely recall something called Doom. Which gives me the idea that what this game really needed was a chainsaw. Elbow THIS Mr Marauder.

Hm, maybe Wolfenstein 3D? For MP shooting it was Team Fortress.
One of the funniest PvP was Mount&Blade - there was this mod that played out in Napoleonic time. Got a bayonet and a musket. Looong loading times (where's GallowsPole? - I think there was no animation cancel) and crappy accuracy. I also took part in a couple of "Line Battles" moving in rank and file, shooting volleys, charging the enemy. They even had cannons! And cavalry.
Way better than Battlefield, or MoH - this **** is utter crap. The only other PvP I have fun with is TF2. I just tried the MoH that used the Frostbite2 - horrible clipping, BS mechanics but nice graphics - I'm gonna deinstall it after playing it three times.

ME1 was the best in the series but had terrible combat.
ME2 was barely a RPG but had improved combat.
ME3 is hardly a shooter nor a RPG. The game was boring.
OT: Nope, not even close.

Another one who started with Wolf 3D, or maybe Ultima Underworld. Also played a lot of modem and LAN games in Doom 2 (don't know why people think it's not online?).
Kinda drifted away from the shooter scene when the mouse started becoming popular though.

Yes.
Before ME1 the closest I had come to shooters were FO3 (and relied on VATS), and a little BL1 (which was a bit of a disaster and put me off of BL2 for far too long) and L4D2 (where I never went above normal campaign mode). I know the MEs aren't really quite shooters, but they were then the closest I had come to really enjoying anything even remotely similar. I played ME1 and ME2 relying on the tactical pause. The kinds of games I was really good at are things like platformers, timed combat (try playing AC1 never using the sword, only the hidden blades, even for open combat), or tactics (DA:O on nightmare is freaking easy).
Played ME3 knowing that I wanted to potentially get into the MP, so I went back to ME1 and 2, did a new run with an adept, mapping my powers to the quick bar and trying to wean myself off of the pause system. It worked, because I wasn't a complete disaster in bronze, but I was scared as hell to move up to silver and then gold for ages
Since I started to improve I've done BL2, some TF2, some more L4D2... I'm now trying to wean myself off of co-op and am trying out BF3 since I have some friends who play that... and I'm not disliking it to my surprise. But I can tell it would have gone the way of BL1 (disaster) if I hadn't had the experience I've had with ME3MP.

I've been playing shooters since Doom, but without any doubt ME3 is the game which has lasted the longest for me. Generally, I find shooters have a very short shelf-life - once the next big thing comes out, the older ones tend to get abandoned quickly.
ME3, though, has been in my trusty old 360 for the best part of a year and I'm still loving it. The sheer variety of characters, classes, powers, possible builds, weapons customisation... it's fantastic.
None of the big name shooter franchises have given me half as much fun as ME3, and I can't wait to to see what the next installment has to offer.
EDIT: Damn fine community too, compared to most.

No. But, it is the first multiplayer game I've actually wanted to keep playing a year after release. And I'll keep on playing it until the servers make me stop. Or until I get a Lancer X. Either way, an eternity.

No. Wolfenstein 3D when I was a wee pup was my first. I didn't get into RPG's until after ME1. I'm making up for lost time now though.
I can't play straight up shooters anymore. Too boring. Needs a good story and/or RPG elements in addition.

I've played plenty of shooters starting with the good'ol Duke himself - Yippee ki-yay MF! Never fancied the multiplayer components much though.

I would not call ME a shooter, there is lot more to it. MP perhaps, and I do not like shooters.

Is Duck Hunt considered a shooter?
Otherwise, Doom. ME was my first "co-op with strangers" game, though.

GTA San Andreas all day every day
Still play it
Most fun GTA IMO
First MP game was OG Halo 1 splitscreen back on the old Ecks Bawks where screencheating was punishable by death in the empire
I actually still have that XBox I think, but I don't think it is in working condition

Unless you count GTA (which is really very different), and the original Duke Nukem, then YES ME3 was my first real shooter. I mostly played driving games before so it was a real change for me.
It took me a long time to get to grips with the mechanics and tactics. This meant I spent a long time in Bronze. Unfortunatley now that I'm a regular Gold player and even playing a few Plats, all the best players are leaving.
Well I'll be first in the queue for ME4 MP !!

The first time I ever saw a FPS was my friend cheating in Wolfenstein 3D with Godmode. I never played it much, and Doom didn't interest me half as much as Civilization, X-wing/vs Tie-fighter, and Zelda Ocarina of Time.
The first FPS I really sunk my teeth into was Goldeneye. Then Perfect Dark. (<- First FPS Coop experience.) I wonder what I'd think of the bot AI in Perfect Dark if I played it again. =/
