For the record, I don't think we should even have a main LI.
This really only applies if we do get another main female LI.

Well, I wish you all the luck with this, but according to The Gaider they first flesh out the characters and THEN decide which ones are LI's.  I haven't really liked any of the LI options since Neverwinter Nights, and I'm still seething that I didn't get to romance Sten.

They can't please everybody all of the time with every aspect of the game--although I think it's a good sign that you enjoy the romance aspect of the game enough to CARE about the moral status of the LI's.

All I know is I wouldn't oppose Dwarven LI if she was a pretty as Bianca.

If they have different types of personalities, it would be nice to have one who responds favorably to different types of player personalities (prone to like diplomatic, or aggressive-etc) they lacked a lawful good type LI but the LI of DA were complex enough to responds favorably toward all spectrums.

It has nothing to do with that, it's about a scum PC seducing an NPC who has duties and a past which would conflict with the romance.

Jesus H. Christ you read far more into my comment than you should have.

I could totally get behind this, LIs who respond to the PC's personalities.  You saw a little bit of this in DA2, but nothing in any depth.

The one thing I'm rooting for is a male LI like Varric.  It doesn't have to BE Varric, but I loved his personality.  I completely agree with not making him a love interest, since he was the narrator, but it'd be awesome to see him back in DA3 as an LI option.

I have always found it interesting that the two most well-adjusted companions were off-limits as LIs.  I'm not sure whether it's deliberate or accidental that Bioware did that, and I actually do like interacting with broken people as characters, but it would be nice to have a well-adjusted companion available as a LI just once.

BioWare games don't have a "main" LI, at least not for a while. Leliana was just as valid a romance as Morrigan, and Merrill was just as supported as Isabela. Heck, if you feel the need to lable a DA2 female romance as "main" I'd give it to Merrill seeing as Isabela doesn't show up till the very end of act 1 and will abandon you at act 2 unless you pick the evil, selfish option.

I wouldn't say Bioware games have a "main" LI, but I do think it's the case that certain love interests can result in a more epic narrative than others. And they tend to be the ones who have the most influence/importance in the narrative, which are typically the poster characters. To use a DA:O example, I don't think the game pushes the player to romancing Morrigan over Zevran, but in the former example, Morrigan has more narrative power, with the dark ritual behind her, where Zevran's importance is confined to a side quest involving the Antivan Crows.

This is actually where one of Bioware's weaknesses emerges: alot of their characters, while extremely enjoyable/well-written as characters, are fairly useless to the overarching narrative. I do think it's important that Bioware characters have a larger role in the story than simply being talked to once in a while.

Yes, I second the well-adjusted LI. Especially a male LI who is more confident and assertive than Alistair, and less whiny/broody than Anders and Fenris.
Although David Gaider said in the ill-fated "Disturbing trend in the use of Lesbian relationships" thread a few weeks back that happy=boring, so we probably won't get a normal, well adjusted LI anytime soon.

Story-wise, it's a classic.  Templar who once sympathized a great deal with mages, only to decide they could not be regarded as people, to the extent he thinks that there's merit to the idea of a universally-applied Tranquil Solution...eventually falls in love with a mage.

The idea was there in Origins, but it wasn't really used.  Bioware missed that opportunity.  Given how popular the character is, I expect we may well see him in DA3, finally offered as a LI.  It's got all sorts of potential for literary drama.

It's also extremely disgusting for you to want him to violate his Templar duty and love a mage (if DA:O is any indication, this is not allowed), especially after being tortured by mages that he thought he could trust.  If your character is a blood mage, it will almost reek of battered wife syndrome.

Frankly it sickens me.

Mages are inherently abusive because reasons, so it's not okay for Cullen to love a mage. But allowing him to continue in the service of a corrupt, violent, bigoted, fascist organization that forcefeeds him an addictive substance is a-ok!

I love how you equate personal problems to "abnormality", as if only a few people in the world have any emotional baggage at all.

There are many with emotional baggage.

Then there are those who talk about nothing else with their friends EXCEPT their emotional baggage. Doing so on a repeatable basis is a possible indicator of certain personality disorders.

You have to admit that Anders and Fenris have an abnormal amount of problems and emotional baggage. It would be refreshing to see less of that in an LI  IMO.

Nice point Fast Jimmy.

Well, when you've been enslaved for as long as you can remember, or live in a sewer with the constant threat of religious zealots who want to capture and possibly kill you, we'll see what else occupies your thoughts.

Also, scan and post your Masters in Psychology please.

I loved that Morrigan was petty, selfish and cruel...she wasn't evil. That's what Leliana was for, a respite from Morrigan.

It won't stop me disputing your diagnosis, but then neither would a Masters.

Anders and Fenris are not suffering from any personality disorders. They are not obsessing over minor or even major incidents in their past. They are dealing with current and constant threats to their safety and wellbeing.

If their persecution was somehow imagined, you might have a point. But it's not imagined, it's extremely real.

This.  I tried to use the term "well-adjusted" for a reason.  I've known enough broken people in my life that a word like "normal" quickly becomes an inappropriate term.  I've actually KNOWN a few Anders and a few Fenrises over the years--and a LOT of Alistairs.  That's why I get sick of people dismissing them as whiners all the time: their personalities are so realistic they could have been lifted from real persons.  I shudder to think of how lacking in empathy many people here show themselves to be.

Why do you care who the "main" LI is, anyway?

I'm happy with Leliana/Merrill for my characters. I like Isabela too - though I don't think she's particularly "main", you can play the game without ever meeting her after all.

She is the main LI.
I would go so far as to call her the cannon LI.
Just look at the DA2 trailers.

She is the most sexually forward one, but I don't think anyone really consider her the "main" LI; Liara basically throws herself at shepard at every opportunity, but most of us (wether romancing her or not) simply consider her "shepard number one fan", not "main LI which every other LI is simply a pale substitute".

As for the main point of the thread: Guys are attracted to ****es, girls are attracted to jerks. It's one of life's great mysteries that made many a shrinks very wealthy. I can't tell how headbangingly frustrating I find the fact that the easiest way to send a girl screaming for the hills is to tell her you like her, and the easiest way to make her like you is treat her like dirt. It would've been funny if it wasn't so sad.
