Hey guys! Just stopping buy to post an article that I wrote. I look back and rank the Mass Effect DLC. I left out the small ones (apperance packs, firewalker, weapons, multiplayer). You can read it here. Obviously I dont expect everyone to agree. The beauty of Mass Effect is everyone takes something different from it. Enjoy guys.

I really enjoyed BDTS. I think it's a bit underrated. A tad on the short side though. But man that skybox is beautiful.

I enjoyed citadel the most. Mostly because it was a deliberate chunk of ham, filled with nods to the fans and inside jokes. They ran the gamut of Garus and his love of calibrations to poking fun at aspects of the mulitplayer. Was also a nice sendoff for the characters we have come to know after 3 games.

Although I enjoyed BDTS, I really don't see why people rank it so highly. It was an OK DLC but really wasn't as great as nostalgic eyes seem to view it. Essentially it was just a tiny bit of story with a lot of Mako driving and some random bits of text.

I think the most fun DLC I've played in the entire series has been the Citadel. It was a bit silly in parts but I was OK with that because that was the tone that was set right from the start. I like the lore of Leviathan (Cthulhu Fhtagn!) but the gameplay, writing, dialogue and overall experience was just awful. There were so many out of character Shepard moments that I genuinely wonder whether it was made by any of the original ME team.

Omega was OK but I wouldn't recommend buying it on anything other than a half-price special. Same with Leviathan. Kasumi Goto is underrated as a team-mate and I really loved her loyalty mission. I was very, very annoyed that they didn't write in more interactions for her as a crew-mate. Zaaed can DIAF. He's a moronic character and I genuinely can't fathom why he's so popular. Javik is... kind-of boring I thought. And his abilities really aren't that great. His DLC is also very bland, with the exception of some OK cutscenes.

Lair of the Shadow Broker would be my most favourite of them all even though I probably enjoyed the Citadel a bit more in terms of sheer fun. LotSB, however, focused on Liara who is my Shep's love-interest whether as a male or female, despite the fact that she's so damned cold and distant.

I agree with a lot of this, but:

1. Due to the nature of the DLC I don't count the Extended Cut as one. I count it as part of the vanilla game

2. I have to put Leviathan above Overlord. I loved how we got to learn about the subject the dlc talks about and how SPOILERS: it makes the catalyst just come out of left field.

3. Kasumi: Stolen Memory is tied with Overlord for me.

Great article (or is it an editorial?) though. I really thought it was a great read

Interesting article, it's pretty close to my ranking except I'd put Omega and Kasumi/Zaeed somewhere above Arrival. I agree that Omega was too-combat heavy even considering the main objective of it. Arrival to me felt like something where one playthrough is enough to see just about everything in it.

Citadel is definitely my favourite. I felt it added a lot of what Mass Effect 3 was missing, and it was nice having a more character-focused DLC. :)

BdtS and LotSb are tied for first.
Then Kasumi:SM in a solid second place.

Third place is undecided as I don't think any other ME DLCs really stand out as expecially noteworthy. Arrival is a chore to play through, Overlord all nice, but just another set of N7 missions rather than a real expansion, same as the Normandy Crashsite. Leviathan is meh. Zaeed and From Ashes are just character DLCs with a single extra mission. Haven't played Omega or Citadel as I've lost insterest in ME3 lately and am not motivated to cash in money for those DLCs.

So if anything, from the remaining DLC it is (yeah I know, don't hang me) Pinnacle Station that is the most fun next in the line. It's just a combat simulator and doesn't try to pose off as anything else. And that Admiral is one funny drillmaster!

Citadel was the only DLC I cared to spend money on.

Never cared to even play any of the other DLC.

My rankings would be:

  • Citadel
  • Lair of the Shadow Broker
  • Kasumi - Stolen Memories
  • Overlord
  • Omega
  • Leviathan
  • Arrival
  • Bring Down the Sky
  • From the Ashes
  • Normandy Crash Site
  • Zaeed - The Price of Revenge
  • Pinnacle Station

Citadel
: silly fun with loads of fan service. I wouldn't want to have this content all the time as it's a bit like a sickeningly sweet dessert. Tasty, but not something you want to eat for every meal. Although not the main attraction, the mission itself is also quite fun and provides a somewhat different experience to the standard missions. It also has some interesting dialogue and choices along the way which make it stand out above a lot of the other more bland DLC missions.

Lair of the Shadow Broker: interesting, loads of battles that stand out from the norm, some moral conflict, LI options for those that romanced Liara, some great scenery, awesome final battle, and a kick-arse base with even more things that add to the overall experience of the game. I'd call this a must-have for anyone playing through ME2.

Kasumi - Stolen Memories: the battles are bland but you don't really play this for the combat. This is all about the character and introduces a nice little story-based adventure. Short but sweet and personally I think Kasumi can be an excellent squad-mate with the right Shepard. Plus her dialogue on missions is some of the best in my opinion. The only real downside to this DLC is that the NPC has so few interaction options after the mission. I would've liked to have seen her be a 'real' squad-mate like the core ones.

Overlord: while the combat generally isn't that special there is a unique environment to explore and battle. The most interesting aspect of this is the story of David and Gavin Archer. Even as a renegade player it's hard to make a renegade choice at the end and difficult choices should be what Mass Effect is all about.

Leviathan: I actually didn't enjoy this DLC. I felt it was very poorly written and executed. Shepard acts like an idiot and says a lot of stupid things that are very out of character. The story is forced and has no real flow to it. The combats are annoying and overall I just wanted to get through it and regretted spending money on it. It is ranked higher than others, however, because of one sole factor: Cthulhu Fhtagn!

Omega: kinda bland in the sense that it's so combat oriented but at the same time you get to play with Aria, see a female turian and get Flare. Flare is awesome.

Arrival: although I wouldn't call this great, it's one redeeming factor is the story elements that are added and the final battle. The battle itself is bland but the end result is pretty awesome.

Bring Down the Sky: I know a lot of people rank this pretty highly but I think a lot that is just nostalgia. I've played through it a dozen or so times and it's just not that special. It was good for its time and certainly excellent for a free download, and I do like the moral quandry offered as well as the story additions to the greater plot of the series, but really, it's pretty bland all things considered.

From the Ashes: very meh. An N7 mission and little more with no really interesting aspects that would place it above others. Javik isn't a very good squadmate as his powers don't mesh well with most Shepards and he's pretty annoying as an NPC. The only reason I rank this higher than others is because they were worse.

Normandy Crash Site: an OK fan service and certainly worth doing if you're invested in the story, your character and the NPC's, but overall not that interesting or great.

Zaeed - the Price of Revenge: the mission itself was OK. Not great, but at least interesting enough not to make you fall asleep with its sameness. The 'moral' choices are pretty stupid IMO. And the fact that you can only really make the paragon or renegade choices at the end if you've got high scores in either or do it very early in the game, make them a bit redudant since you have to know that before playing through it. Although Zaeed is definitely an excellent squad-mate, I find him very annoying as an NPC and not someone I'd trust if I were Shepard.

Pinnacle Station: they actually charged for this. WTF?

1.Citadel.
2.Laid of the Shadow Broker.
3.Leviathan.
That's it. Don't get me wrong i am just as "greedy" as the next spoiled Bioware fan but those 3 are the only ones i consider to be epic work and more than worth the purchase. Everything else purchased was to:
1. Support Bioware(Stopped 10.03.2012). Hoping that future products will correct this way of thinking and withholding Le Wallet.
2. Spoiled Greeds R us.

@Malisin - I completely agree with your assessment of Pinacle Station. I switched to PC on Mass Effect and Bringing Down the Sky at the time was the free DLC and they charged for Pinacle Station. I always thought they got the charge wrong.

I kind of think of Citadel of Pinacle Station 3.0; much improved and even with the arena, it doesn't feel like the grind fest Pinacle Station did.

Okay, the ranking.
  • Citadel
  • Lair of the Shadow Broker
  • From Ashes/ Normandy crash site ( I felt incredibly moved the first time I went through it.  After that, it felt like a grind)
  • Stolen Memories
  • Arrival
  • Omega (Down side is that it takes a graphic novel for the full context of the DLC to be understood)
  • Leviathan
  • Bringing down the Sky
  • Price of Revenge
  • Overlord (Doesn't really add much to the story as a whole)
  • Fire walker (see above but you get a neat tank intro and it was "free")
  • Pinacle Station (As I say above, grind fest.  BioWare gets the idea right in the Armax Arsenal Arena)
Like others, I don't consider the "Extended Cut" DLC, I consider it a patch since on top of fixing (sort of) the massive train wreck the original ending was, it is also documented that it fixes an in-game conversation status bug.

So, there's my list.
