Strangely enough, I'm leery of romancing Thane for just this reason, despite liking the writing. I have a penchant for making characters with very involved backstories and personalities (ya know, ROLEPLAYING), and therefore both my primary and secondary femSheps are saddled with some significant issues. Romancing Thane might just send them spiraling down the deep end given his...ahem...condition.

When I saw clips of Garrus' romance, I was afraid that he may not be mature enough for my paragade/renegon Femshep. Yet, on the other hand, after finding out about the intensity of Thane's emotional baggage, I arrived to similar conclusions as InvisiShepard -- it's just a bit too much to chew on. My main character also had an "involved backstory" (being a both solo survivor and a colonist) where the people closest to her were brutually murdered and tortured in some form, and she struggled heavily to earn respect at the earlier times in her military career. Sure, my FemShep's a tough cookie to knock down, and despite her tramatizing experiences, she's still able to continue saving the entire galaxy with a functional, positive attitude intact.
I think, for once, she deserves a close relationship that can make her laugh instead of cry. And Garrus fits the bill. The romance was sweet, awkward, and funny while meaningful, and it additionally brought back the youthful innocence she lost earlier on -- or should I say, perhaps, too early. I haven't played through the game yet, but I really look forward to having her take the backseat as an ordinary citizen who can relax, be a little selfish and enjoy themselves like everyone else. After that, she could switch back to "Super-RoboShep" who rescues mankind from the universal 'evil' forces of impending doom.
But Thane's storyline is very well-developed and nonetheless, intriguing. <3 It's probably just about as engaging as Subject Zero's romance. So I'll hand him over to my spacer Shep -- a sapling (compared to colonist Shep) who's kinda new to this philosophical dilemma, er... existentialist crisis, uh, thing. Her relative inexperience will give her enough room to take on Thane's problems without feeling like it's "deja vu all over again". She and Thane together can explore what it means to live and die.
Ultimately, I think the devs performed a wonderful job in offering enough opportunities that allows for different types of romances. They really left enough room for a unique player experience.

Out of curiosity, and if it's not too insulting or imposing to ask, why does a very involved backstory and personality have to involve saddling with significant issues to be counted as roleplaying? I have to ask because I see it a lot in the roleplaying community.
It's fine
It doesn't have to be the case. My Dragon Age character was a very functional, stable, mostly normal person, with only the issues of a...well, ordinary individual, and still had an involved backstory and personality. It's just interesting to give a character issues and see how they develop, how they react to the world around them. It happens in all sorts of fiction, not just in roleplaying games. And with Shepard, you have to imagine that you'd develop some issues as a space marine.

As for Thane, I found their story to be incredibly bittersweet, heartbreaking and realistic <3 But I have a sneaking suspicion that one of the reasons Bioware had given us such a character was because in ME3 he’ll live while TIM pulls the plug on Shepard. I dread the prospect of being correct

Ah, thank youI suppose I always found Shepard with issues funny since it’s difficult for me to believe that any commander would be as successful as Shepard obviously is if she had heavy things on her mind to deal with. I always assumed, from my roleplaying experience, that be she paragon or renegade any such stuff was dealt with back in ME1 or even before. But to each their own I suppose
To the last sentence: definitely. That's the great part of Bioware.
My spacer Shep has gone through some major challenges, but none where she had to reinvent her entire world view and the meaning of her existence. I've thought of her as a lucky marine who just happened to have extraordinary combat and military capabilities that often saved her from suffering the harsher psychological realities of life. It's only when she encountered the dire situations in Mass Effect 1 (and especially after learning about the Reapers), that she finally meets her match. Natural talent by itself is no longer enough. Decisions aren't as black and white, and all choices have their long-term consequences. For this Shep, ME2 is truly the much darker, second act, while for my colonist Shep -- this, absolute chaos, is something she has always known.

Man I still suck royally at navigating Bioware Social/Forums, but I'm just glad to be here.
I've been wondering - why do I keep seeing all kinds of threads about "eww Garrus" vs. "eww Thane"? I wasn't aware I needed to choose between the two!
My romancing was pretty much like SomethinNothing's - I planned on having my Shep stay with Kaidan, then suspected she'd end up with Garrus, but once Thane walked in the door, game was clear. Sorry Garrus, but let's just stick to making things explode.
I don't really have any 'evidence' to support my gut feeling, but kinda like InvisiShepard, to me Thane just felt most worldly - the only one to be considered somewhat equal with my Shep. I can totally see Nyx. Aeterna's very good point too. I guess this just comes down to everyone's Sheps being so different.
And gee, J.C. Blade, way to jinx ME3.

As soon as I saw the first Thane trailer, I knew my main Shepard (a spacer hero) was in trouble and would end up cheating on "poor" Kaidan. Well, after seeing "poor" Kaidan on Horizon and having him imply that he'd have been happier if Shepard had died than have her working with Cerberus, my dear spacer said screw Kaidan. Then along come Thane...just what she needed.

Yep. My spacer Shep is high strung while trying to appear not to be high strung. Something about Thane's presence is calming and exciting all at once. Like you said, Thane feels like he's an equal to Shepard. Kaidan was never an equal. He was so busy yammering about fraternization and duty and not wanting to distract her and blah blah blah that it was a chore to be with him at times. Garrus in ME1 wasn't an equal either, but I think he came into his own in ME2. Still, he's more of a brother to my Shepard ("let's go blow some more stuff up!!").

I think I could deal better with my Shepard dying than with Thane dying. I'd still be bawling like a damned fool, but my Shep would like knowing that Thane survives...and, I hope, gets cured of that damned stupid disease!
