Merrill cries and whines from day one about the Mirror being Elvish, when it's not!
Duncan said -If you did the Dalish Dragon age 1 origin, that the Mirror was Tevinter just before he smashed it.
He also said she was not allowed to come back unless they cleansed the ruins with fire.

This they obviously did not do.

I wish there were some way to refuse Merrill into the party.. Every time I hear her whining about that mirror I just want to stab her lying face!

She keeps harping on that the Mirror has something to do with Evish history and it does not!
It has nothing at all to do with Elves.

Ahem. Duncan is in error during the Dalish Origin.

As Finn reveals in Witch Hunt, the Tevinters actually took the Eluvians from the elves of Arlathan, but were unable to use them for anything except long-distance communication. This leads to people mistakenly believing the Eluvians are Tevinter artifacts.

Just ignore her after returning to Kirkwall. Sadly she'll still show up at the end of the game but you won't have to deal with her and her mirror.

Gaider also confirmed that Merrill extrapolated information from the shard and studied elven lore extensively to build her own eluvian from scratch. Witch Hunt shows Morrigan got the information to activate her eluvian (which had never been corrupted by darkspawn) through great difficulty, by studying a Dalish tome the dalish themselves couldn't read.

I think it's safe to say that it's elven in origin. Only Morrigan and the ancient Arlathan elves know/knew everything there is to know about eluvians, but Merrill is a world authority on them, and probably surpasses Morrigan in knowledge because Merrill built her own. She just didn't know how to activate it, whereas Morrigan did, but didn't build hers.
