I'm trying to find a tool that will batch convert from .png RGB-Alpha to .tga and preserve the alpha layer.

...and it has to be free.  ;)

First don't even think of trying irfanview for this. It doesn't handle transparency at all. Because I got fed up of that little feature I changed over to XnView, another graphics viewing program (IMO the best free 1 I've seen) that handles transparency well in program. I make no guarantees how it does in the batch conversion stakes though as I haven't had a need to use it yet. But it does have comprehensive batch processing built in.

As an alternative that I haven't tried at all, there is Easy Graphic Converter Free! by Etrusoft. Like I said, I haven't tried it so don't know if it's any good.

Well, this is very odd. My inventory icons look fine in an image viewer but appear upside down in the game. I'm sure this is an easy fix, but I've never encountered it before so...help please.

Okay, the Omnibus has the answer -- some image apps petulantly save the TGAs in a way that NWN doesn't like. The solution: tgaflp.

I use tgaflp all the time, but not for its intended purpose. I have it set-up so that I can do a double flip because it removes any vestiges of compression from the tgas. This is so that when I come to convert them to dds the program that I use has no problems. I remembered reading somewhere that the particular dds program didn't like the compression and came up with this ham fisted solution. Hey it may sound silly but it works for me (^_^).
