I scratched my head at all the obvious truisms in this thread until I discovered some serious necroing. AP is not all that difficult a concept imo.

Ummm once you get to weapons that have almost as much AP as they do damage output It does indeed make a difference... AP of 3 on a 17 damage weapon is nothing.

I think you misunderstood the OP. All he said was 20 dmg beats 17 dmg +3 AP.

If that was indeed his point the short version of his story would be different,  almost in every case it is better to use maul after u pass lvl 10, the average armor of the mobs u face varies from 15 to 30+ depending on the type of creatures they are. 


The best greatswords in game has 18.7 dmg, 6,4 AP, while the best maul has 14.4 dmg and 14 AP, it is easy to see which will do better consistant dmg in the end.
