Having a mage wear heavy armour would be ridiculous, at least some leather covering more vulnerable places would be nice. Maybe a tunic or two?

I think they can wear parts of plate armor to cover vital body parts but not full plate armor with chain armor underneath like the standard knight trope we see.

I was talking about having a full set of heavy armour, I wasn't being specific.  Just as long as they aren't walking around wearing something that screams, "Oh hai guys, I'm so not an apostate or anything :D"  I wouldn't mind seeing something like the Champion armour that Mage Hawke had again.

That's one reason why I wanted to show that gambison. It's just a breastplate over cloth and looks fine for a mage to wear in Thedas. Considering how big chevalier armor looks, it'll seem light in comparison if they kept it as thin/close to the fabric. It could look lighter than some of the leather armors.

I don't like the large metal bits on the champion armor, though I like the rmor on the whole.

well I want something besides robes as well. it is annoying that mages are only able to wear robes. I am not saying give them plate armor but something different then robes. also I agree the champion armor for the mage was awesome and they need more like that

Personally, I'd love to see a return of the arcane warrior as I feel like it gives the mage much more options as far as equipment goes (and fixes a lot of your armor problems.) However, if they do bring it back it needs a bit of a nerf from it's DA:O incarnation, lets face it a mage using Wade's superior dragonbone plate along with other stamina/mana conversion items was super OP.

What I've always wanted that never seems to be included in any game is a simple cloak. A big, brown/black long leather cloak thrown over some practical armour or something. With an optional hood, too.

For warriors and rogues too, actually.

I've always wanted to give my characters the Aragorn ranger-ey look but never could. :(

I must agree, i'm surprised we haven't seen a simple hooded cloak yet.

I would like a classy tux and top hat for my mage.

Only if the mabari is replaced by a rabbit.

One of my favorite mage oriented armors/robes is probably the Red Wizard of Thay robe. Just look at it, it's both mage-y and non-mage-y in appearance, it's aesthetically appealing and practical (a pair of pants, a coat and a cloak, if you're feeling fancy). I would be the happiest camper in the world to get something like this in DA:I.

I don't get the issue with the robes not deflecting swords, no, they probably wouldn't, but honestly armor in this setting - even heavy armor - means less than nothing. We have mage builds that can lay waste to people in armor, involving little if any effort. Even a Templar's resistance is easily overcome. Armored opponents are laughable, the Mage spell armors seem far more effective than any actual armor, as shown by several builds across DA:O and DA2 that turned your simple robed Mage into a literal tank complete with the big gun on top. :P

Then again, I just never saw the issue with robes in the first place, other than that they needed more variety. There were too many reused textures/meshes for robes that were supposed to be entirely different from one another in name/description.

I thought a lot of the robes were nice. They'll probably give an AW spec, they hinted at there being only one spec option which I though was interesting so I assume the benefits that come with it will be even more awesome than before. There should be an invisible armor cast so I can run around shirtless

New mage armour should be a fluffy pink robe with fluffy pink slippers.

Is there any lore reason mages don't suit up?

Well, they do sort of suit up with the rock armor spell. I imagine that for the physically unconditioned, having armor you can take off with a snap of your fingers might be appealing.

On a different note, I agree with the OP. There aren't enough pants in mage fashion.

Mages wear bathrobes and ugly hats. It's a fact of life. Just thank the Maker that they're not covered in white stars.

That said, I hope there are no mage robes in DA2 that look exactly like Chantry robes.

Yes, a lot of the improvements to Mage armour seemed to come from DLC Packs. Bethany's "Warden" armour becoming available with Legacy, the Fugitive Mantle and the other DLC Robe were all somewhat practical in design and also pleasant to look at. The only thing in the "core" game that I personally liked for Mages was the Champion set (even if the dribble shelf was ugly).

They've obviously got the ability to create practical *and* nice looking gear, but it seemed to be largely reserved for the DLC. Modders can make things more pleasant, but without a toolset they're rather limited in their capabilities...

Whether Bioware improve core designs themselves or release a toolset for Modders to use. I really would like to see some more variety in armour design for the core game, not just for Mages, but for Rogues and Warriors as well.

This was my attire in DA2 I want more mage clothing to look like this, and more mask like this one for each class. the robes have to go, or at least make fewer of them, my characters are always male and I'm sorry I don't like them in dresses.

Have you see a gambison on a person. It's the padded coat worn here under the plate.

The gambison and plate can still look mage"ey", it's more coat like than dress or robes, but also a bit more suitable for battle IMO.

This looks great. Tight and armor-y on top and more flowy on the bottom. Mages need protection too. Probably moreso than anyone else.

I gotta agree, the robes have a place and I wouldn't want to get rid of them all together but more variety would be nice.

Merill's 'romance' armor was pretty nice.

Also can we do away with the feathers and fluffy fur?

Mage gear ruined the class for me in DA2. The whole hiding from the chantry thing becomes ridiculous when you're rocking robes and a staff. It makes me wonder how the templars managed to capture any apostates when they couldn't even figure out that Obvious Mage Hawke was obviously a mage.

Personally the perfect thing for me would be a sleeveless robe worn open, with lots of tattering. Like the protaganist from an old game called chaos legion.

Couldn't help it, low-hanging fruit and all that.  I do dig the tattered robes look though.  Everyone knows that the most dangerous mages spend most of their time in the wilderness or slums.  Not in some fancy tower.

Come to think of it, I wasn't really a huge fan of the rogue outfits either other than the Black Fox's Jerkin, the Champion armor and that other DLC armor I can't rightly remember the name of.
