Having a mage wear heavy armour would be ridiculous, at least some leather covering more vulnerable places would be nice. Maybe a tunic or two?
would that I could show you how AWESOME my character looked with Cailan's Armour set and spellfury in Awakenings THE Reasoning behind the madness.... I had a bunch of high level spells that got me alot of attention so to hold my own my mage needed to be able to take a hit. Not ridiculous at all especially with the Arcane Warrior class..

What I've always wanted that never seems to be included in any game is a simple cloak. A big, brown/black long leather cloak thrown over some practical armour or something. With an optional hood, too.
I would like to see that.

One of my favorite mage oriented armors/robes is probably the Red Wizard of Thay robe. Just look at it, it's both mage-y and non-mage-y in appearance, it's aesthetically appealing and practical (a pair of pants, a coat and a cloak, if you're feeling fancy). I would be the happiest camper in the world to get something like this in DA:I.
That's nice. I like that. I can see my female mage protagonist wearing that.

Actually now that i think about it the dark elf Disciple of Khaine from Warhammer: Age of Reckoning is a good example. Featuring a robe and a leather hauberk.

Actually if we have to have robes there should be at least one which looks like this, but with the flaming sword rather than the cross:

It would work out the same way with these mages robes, add some stuff and make it look awesome.
Not all mage outfits need to go all the way to your ankles or knees, not all of them need symetrical hoods and capes, they can be thick or thin, with fur, feather or leather, with pants and boots, with a helmet instead of a hood. The things you could do with mage clothing is almost limitless, they don't need armor if other stats are good, you're a mage, you can stay on the side lines if you want. you can wear bones or qunari clothing for all i care, you can wear an enchanted prom dress if you want... please don't make an enchanted prom dress, that would suck...

-Starting robes (as starting robes)
-Champion robes
-Warden robes (the actual Warden robes, not the rogue armour, though I guess that works)
-Fugitive's Mantle
-Malcolm's Bequest (looked better on male Hawkes though)
-Robes of the Pretender
-Notorious Pirate robes (think that's the name?)
-Chantry robes (dressing up like a Chantry sister/brother is an excellent disguise!)
I actually like the turquoise robes in DA2, and the ones like what Marethari wears (which we can't have in DA2), but the choice should be more balanced. Of the 'good' armours I mentioned above, most are DLC.

I stayed in the pirate robes until endgame, where I was thrilled to change into another pair of pants. I need more mage pants.
...I'm down with mage bootyshorts, too. With requisite feathers and buckles, of course.

Wizards without robes? HERESY!
You wanna play a mage? Dress accordingly.
I'd be more concerned with the napkins the mages call hats...
I would have to agree, wouldn't it be kinda boring if all the classes looked alike (armor-wise). The robes are very disctinctive for mages and makes them look unique compared to the other classes.
Lore-wise mages are known to not be very physically strong, since they concentrate mostly on magic instead of melee, and thus shouldn't be allowed to wear armor sets like warriors.
