Apparently the the default settings the game chooses for you if you're just starting the MP now is Platinum Collectors.
Because, I dunno, EA/BioWare really want you to be horribly scarred by your first MP experience and never, ever try it again.

I've been the fly-on-the wall of a game like this. Dropped into a lobby with three very new players all readied up with level 1 uncommon weapons, with no mods or permanent gear. I needed to see how long they would last.
It ended up being Dagger Cerberus, and they all got downed and stomped pretty much instantly before I left.

It does really bring up a point though; many of us wandered into multiplayer unaware and there is no in-game documentation or support. I was pretty lost when I first tried MP; I hadn't finished SP and it was the first time I'd seen a Ravager or Banshee. I'm glad I stuck around and eventually wandered into this hive of scum and villainy er... lovely community.

Congrats to them then, that worked perfectly in my case. Tried bronze solo a handful of times and died horribly in wave 1, tried a PUG (not that i knew the term then) and got kicked twice. Never touched MP again for the next year. Well done!
And to think i could have a maxed manifest by now... *sigh*
