What are some of your favourite companions to take along with your MC when playing the game? And by this I dont necessarily mean the best or most effective, just simply the ones you personally enjoy the most.

I actually get extreme enjoyment of creating a nearly pure meele-based party. My Warden character is generally a DW who takes Alister/Shale (either work as the main tank) along with Sten and Wynne in a largely healer role.  I completely kicked ass with this party late in the game. Completely tore apart the darkspawn hordes when venturing within the Deep Roads and even the usually challenging fight with Branka and the Golems was a cinch. Even managed to defeat Gaxkang on nightmare difficulty without reloading once. Warrior class toally rules for me in every RPG.

I generally try to go with the usual tank, dps, rogue, healer format, although I've tried other setups. My favourite by the way is Alistair as tank, Leliana (I adore her :) ) as an archer and Wynne as healer. Although while playing as an archer, warrior or rogue, I like Wynne or Morrigan doing the tanking, and my warden, Leliana and Shale being at range. Thanks to mods, in later playthroughs I tried various combos, sometimes respecing companions while taking care it suited my playstyle.

I actually have fun with all melee parties - DW rogue warden, Zevran, Alistair, Shale. But a common setup is DW Rogue PC, Zevran, Alistair, and Wynne (subbing out occasionally for Morrigan). On the rare occasion I play a mage, I generally like Zev, Alistair, and Leliana. But my favorites to take for dialogue plus fighting skills are Zevran, Alistair, Shale, Wynne, and Morrigan. Some truly entertaining banter, and decent insight into quests. ;)

My usual layout is two warriors who split tank and DPS duty between them, a Spirit Healer, and a lockpicking melee rogue. The later two are usually Leiliana and Wynne, and the former two are any warriors. Of course, I swap out a companion for whichever slot in that lineup my Warden fills.

I like solo on nightmare with AW, to reliably beat Gaxkang,
i need ~30 dex for good hit rate & mana draining poison.

Let's see- looks like this has four possible answers-
1. I usually keep a party of 1 tank and then enough mages and rogues to do crowd-control and healing spells, pickpocketing during and out of combat, and lockpicking/ trap-disarming. The selections I make vary according to the class of my Warden and the need for particular companions at various junctures.
2. My fav companions on the grounds of fun to travel with: Zevran for his wit and humor, Morrigan for her refreshingly no-nonsense atheist views (ironically in a world of magic), Sten for that compellingly genuine sense of urgency and honor regarding the mission, and Oghren for his comic fails and voice. I've never traveled with any combo of those particular four though despite getting two tanks, a mage, and a rogue in the deal.
3. I have no favorite traveling party because it varies according to the personality of the character. For ex., despite #2 I'm already set on going w Leliana, Shale, and Wynne on my current playthrough w a DN because that seems more the company he'd keep out of the choices available.
4. I also have no favorite companions based on builds because I use the No Follower Auto-level mod so as not to be hindered by such logistical dilemmas. Otherwise I'd pretty much never travel with dual-wielding Zevran or two-handed Sten and Oghren due to the weakness or superfluousness of those builds with my playstyle.

I usually go with the DPS-tank-healer-lockpicker setup. As a general template with a human main character, almost always oghren-alistair-wynne-leliana, switching out one of those 4 for my main character's role. Aside from group roles, I tend to favor the 'look' of the group over 'statistically optimal' gear. For example, leliana with the diligence armor set looks great, though not optimum. As a nonhuman, oghren, shale (tank) and zevran are solid to group with, especially when I play as an elf mage for a nonhuman party. Those are the two group setups I enjoy most, with oghren faved for group role and party banter.

My most preferred party combo is Warrior-Rogue-Mage-Shale as being the most effective in my eyes. I like a playstyle where I have access to a wide range of skills.

Most favourite rogue of mine is Leliane, as she has great support skills (Zevran takes too many level-ups after recruiting to make him a succesful lockpicker, I find him too one-sided),

Most favourite mage of mine is Morrigan, as I'd rather have a damage-dealing mage that I give some healing skills, than a mage that hardly do anything but healing and buffing.

Most favourite warrior used to be Alistair, as he's a close pall from the beginning of the story, but lately I begin to like Sten more as the sundering of arms and armour and knocking of their feet of enemies nicely complement the damage-dealing skills of a two-hander warrior.

I like Shale because his skills kind of mix the roles of warrior and mage: he has the equivalent of a fireball with his rock hurling, he can stun enemies and deal massive blows with his fists, a very useful combination of talents.

Up until now my favourite Warden class has been the rogue. It's tempting to play a rogue, as without one you wouldn't be able to open any chests in the prologue.

BTW: as for prefered banter, I actually like them all and it's fun to constantly discover new banters as in different playthroughs I try out different combinations of NPC's. Nice recent discoveries for me are the pestering of Sten by Leliane, and a kind of understanding developing now between Leliane and Shale.

+1 for all-warrior parties. No tank required since everyone should be able to take a few knocks. Basically you have 4 DPS characters. Loads of fun and extremely powerful. Though, of course, you still have those chests...

Leliana, Wynne and Alistair are who I mostly take with me. They're a good compliment to my 'paragon' Warden and their abilities in combat have a pretty good amount of variety to them so I'm never stuck with just a single tactic.

Varies. I like mages best, so that's the origin I play the most, making Wynne and Morrigan pretty much redundant. They spend more time in camp than anyone except Sten (who half the time gets left in the cage in Lothering).

Alistair is always my tank unless I'm a sword and board Cousland in which case I swap him to DW. (I play on the PC so mods are not an issue).

For lockpicking/ranged dps I take Leliana, up close and personal dps is Zevran. If I'm not a mage, one of these (I try to vary from playthrough to playthrough) gets swapped out for Wynne or Morrigan for heals/buffs etc.

Since I picked up the Ser Gilmore mod, I now get him in Lothering and use him through everything except the end battles in Denerim as I have some kind of conflict that causes a crash every time I kill the AD and move to the post coronation scene. He's a sword and board like Alistair, but since I already have Alistair in that role, he gets respecced to a 2hander dps wielding warrior and he's really a beast in combat.

Depends what I am, which is usually a mage. So I normally take Alistair, Leliana (archer) and Zevran. I sometimes switch out Zevran for Sten or Shale just for a change.
As a rogue its normally Alistair, Leliana(archer) and Morrigan.

I usually play as a mage, and I prefer to have two tanks in the party, so: Alistair, Shale/Dog, Leliana. In Awakenings it was always Nathaniel, Anders, and Sigrun though.
