"Primitives" , the name "Ashley Willliams" and her referring to her weapon as a "my boomstick" in Virmire on ME1 are all nods to Sam Raimi's "Army of Darkness" (1992), which is a hilarious movie. There's another nod to this movie when Shepard "mumbles something" in Noveria when trying to activate the neutron purge at Peak 15.
