I like it on my shotgun-based Asari Vanguard. It's light yet powerful enough, allows me to use my powers often (I don't use grenades, only go with charge and stasis). It can stagger mooks sometimes, and I find it good against Phantoms. It's not my favorite shotgun, but it's a good one nonetheless. I don't use it on many characters but I like it overall.

Or just use a wraith.

The Disciple is an OK gun.... if you don't have the Talon.  Actually, you could make a coherent argument for using the Disciple X over the Talon 1.  I think once you get the Talon to about level III, there is no justification any more, unless you just want a light sword handle. 

If you're using it as a stagger gun, you should be using the GPS or maybe the Graal instead.

I don't know why you think a flame shield is necessary.  Weapon-based builds relying on low-DPS weapons and speccing out of one of the best powers on the game are pretty popular here, right?  I have never gotten any negative comments on my no-Marksman Proxy Mine spamming Turian Soldier.  The only downside is that taking power damage over weapon bonuses means that the recoil on my Tempest is harder to control.

Many other shotguns do a better staggering job than than the disciple. They don't even have to land all their pelets either a good portion of the time to do so. Iwill so go far as to say no use in being lore friendly with the justicar when you have a better selection of weapons for her.

The Disciple is why the Asari chose to resolve issues with diplomacy. The Claymore is why the Krogan prefer to settle arguments in a fight.

I use it on the Asari Valkyrie consistently since it has a negligible affect on her cool down. Warp ammo IV, or Incendiary IV, plus those four shots works quite well for me.
