You know I have to ask this really but...

They live in a version of the Middle Ages, how in the hell do all of these people know how to read and write? I mean REALLY It took the Modern world untill the 20th Centrury to get that far. **** in first world nations you STILL find large numbers of the population that can't do either.

And you mean to tell me people that never wash (yet are somehow cleaner than anyone in Skyrim) can All read? The hell?

"Asunder" adressed this. According to it, most peasants can only read dwarven runes.
Despite this, there are, at least, two mundane universities in Thedas, namely in Orlais and the Free Marches. I assume most of the people who travel with the PC have a good reason to have learned the letters at one point.
Alistair lived in the house of a noble; Leliana was a bard; Zevran was probrably taught by the crows; Aveline's father was a noble in Orlais and he probrably taught her; Wynne/Anders learned in the Circle; Hawke teaches Fenris, etc.

Well, then obviously your Fenris wouldn't be able to leave any journal behind.
While mine went as far as trying to "correct" some of the more outregaeous stories about Hawke, that Varric wrote...  /headcaon

I almost want to play an RPG now in a world where writing was never invented.

Oh, and I'd still say no to corpse idea.

Unless you find said corpse in Nevara and have the option to bring them back as an undead mummy...

...and then romance them.

finding corpses of former companions... no... I really don't see any sense in it and it would certainly ****** some people off if it's their beloved character... Imagine a thousand fangirls hating on Bioware because they just had to stumble over Cullens dead body....

I am under the impression that Alistair learned in the Chantry, actually. As for Leiliana, she was the favored servant of a noble for a while.

Aw, I don't know if I want to stumble across the corpse of a companion unless it's one I hate like Anders. I would be pissed if it were Fenris or Varric. Which means the rest are fair game for discovery. lol!

I also taught Fenris how to read.

Discovering the body of my favorite Krogan poet in ME3 was sadface after I heard his audiolog. Maybe we'll stumble across Brother Genetivi or another minor character.
