I made a small but mildly interesting discovery recently while doing a nostalgic trawl through Origins.

This time around, I had the Reaper's Cudgel to sell at the king's camp, and was thus flush with cash by the time I arrived in Lothering. When I approached the family of elves who were robbed by the bandits, there was an option I never got before: I could give them fifty silvers.

I'd had fifty silvers before, or at least I'm pretty sure I have, but never got this option before. Anyways, they were very pleased; the wife exclaimed to my elven Warden "I knew one of our own people could help us!"

Anyways, thought I'd share.

I always give them the money then tell them the bandits are dead so they can go look for their stuff, cause you know 50s isn't going to last very long.

How much money do you have on you, generally? I don't need an exact estimate, just a ballpark figure.

I'm just curious if this is the result of having hundreds of sovereigns or if you just need a couple.

I have never really paid attention to the options, and because I never had enough coin to spare i just tell them I ran off or killed those bandits. I have a couple of characters heading to lothering soon.
so you can give them the money AND let them know the bandits are dead?

Apparently so, though you need to talk to them twice.

50 gold is a ridiculous ammount of money in game. I think I paid out 1 gold recently for the sword, I think it's the green blade in Redcliffe, for the fun of it. I'm too shy to ask for the kiss there.

Edit:  Posted ImageOoops It's only 50 Silver that makes sense.

It's 50 silver, not 50 gold.

Still, that's quite a bit of cash by Dragon Age standards.

Yeah just talk to them again after. I think you have to have at least 5 gold, I usully just sell all my inv to that point which includes the dragon chest, a bow (cant remember the name) and a mage sash that sells for 20g alone.

No matter how much I save up at the start of the game, I never seem to have enough to get the option to offer them money (maybe it's bugged?), so I always end up just telling them I killed/drove off the bandits and make them happy that way.

Yeah, you need a certain amount of gold for the option to trigger. Don't know why you have to have like 10 sovereigns -- as an example, I don't remember the actual minimum -- just so you can give them 50 silvers, but meh.

Yes, I did some experimentation and you are correct: you need a minimum of 10 sovereigns to give the elves 50 silvers.

I don't know why you need that much, though I note it's possible to make just over 10 sovereigns in Lothering just from various quest rewards.

It's armour, Blood Dragon plate.(sorry couldn't remember the name before.) Not sure if you get it from the ultimate edition or one of the dlc's but it's always in my inventory with a new character.

No, you cannot purchase the Lothering elves for cash! (j/k)

Good to know you can toss away half a sovereign and still tell them where they might recover their pet lamb. When I've managed to have the 10sov I always presumed the conversation options only let me do one or the other... so, of course, I let them know where to find their pet lamb...
