For a dying game there sure are a helluva lot of people playing it. Just sayin'...

Well I once had a fl with over 50 who played actively 2 months ago.  Now its down to 16 and usually only 1-2 still actively play ME3 so many have left and the newer players arent outnumbering those who left.

I find pick up games all time. Sometimes they're bad, most times they're fine. I think that judging a games playerbase by one's friendslist might not be an accurate overall assessment of a games popularity. Like yourself most of the people on my FL don't play any longer or that often. Still, there appears to be an active playerbase around.

Its not just my fl I used to fill a lobby right away to host now they take 15+ minutes to fill and sometimes dont even fill up.  The quality of he player base in pugs has diminishined considerably since reckoning's release.  Before reckoning we could find great pugs even for platinum.  Now getting someone not using a juggy or sporting even a lvl 1 rare and gear equiped is cause for a celebration.

True, but those low N7/Challenge points are part of the reason why I believe the game is still highly active. Many new people have been picking up the game lately. Whether they stick with it is a different question.

If anything the juggy, AIU, TGI, and the other crutch classes are keeping this game alive. People with lesser gaming skill (which is a big portion of the playerbase) would have quit a long time ago if they couldn't play gold or plat for credits. I think the biggest reason it's dying is because instead of flooding every DLC with new kits (especially reckoning) they should have added more maps and missions.
People are getting bored running around on the same maps spamming the same powers over and over.
Personally I still love it

That right there is why crutch kits, that still do ridiculous damage, are BAD FOR A GAMES LIFETIME. You hit the nail on the head. Players playing the AIU, TGI, and jug, will in most cases, never play anything else, and they won`t even play those kits all that long. This is why Bioware kept releasing more and different kits, to up variety, player choices, and overall game time.

GREAT IDEA.                                                              HORRIBLE IMPLEMNTATION.

I agree. Most of the great players have moved on (jay hoxtatron and ashen earth comes to mind). If they had added more maps and more objectives/missions, maybe those great players would still be here. 90% of the juggies and AIUs we see in gold/plat lobbies can't play anything else at that difficulty.

I think GJ is very harmful to overall game longevity with new players.
RNG store is pretty bad... but sometimes I cannot tell if it helps the game or hurts the game. Maybe 50/50

RNG is still the top reason for me. I died a little inside everytime they added more URs to the pool at each DLC release. I can't imagine how I'd feel as a new player when they added the promotionals as well.

Money is the root..  Actually, credits for the RNG, the ultimate reason they're using crutch characters in difficulties not suited for them.

I was unaware we were in the death throws, where are the statistics to back up this claim?

The MP seems like its 2 1/2 hours through a 4 hour wedding reception. Still going, still got life, still got plenty of time before its over but....it's working it's way into the claming end of the party.

Some people have to get home because they have work the next day, some have kids, some are just tired or worn out.

There's still people there, still fun to be had, but the crowd is beginning to thin. I hate to admit it but I've noticed it to.

I don't agree with the idea that consoles caused the inability to fix bugs. Computers can be built in a highly variable manner and making a game work for so many different combinations of equipment isn't easy. That, and not all of us can afford to drop several thousand dollars to get a top-end machine.

Which comes back to consoles preventing BW from releasing patches that could have been used to improve the game.
ME3 would have survived much longer as PC only imo.

Funny, if not for consoles you wouldn't even HAVE Me3, so sod off.

The games dying because of no new content. I can't believe I'm the first to have stated that.

With no new kits, maps, weapons, challenges, or balance changes to look forward to, people just sort of...lose interest.

that's a red herring. Do you think Bioware would not have used the IP if they were never asked to do an Xbox exclusive?

Damn it people stop saying this. There is no need to spend four digits on a pc to play 99% of games. Hell I'm using a pc I bought for the price of a console three years ago.

There is a need if you want to run brand new games on top settings with no issues.

^Consoles have held graphics back so much that you can run almost any game on a 22 inch monitor at max settings on a $500 computer now.

If you can afford a console, you can afford a PC. End of story.

Every game is dying the moment it was released. It's only a question of time.

I'm honestly surprised ME3MP has lasted this long, and surprised further at how well it's still going despite BioWare pulling support from it.

What has pushed ME3MP furthest towards its inevitable death?

IMO it's the other game modes.

Or to be more precise: the lack of them.

More characters, more guns, more maps, more factions, more objective types, more difficulties... these things are all great, but none of them can really disguise the fact that it's exactly the same Horde Mode game, over and over.

I guess I was under the impression that pc version's max settings were superior to what consoles could display.

imho, the game died as usual when the programmers made some horrible dumbastic code.. that made impossible to fix the rocket exploits.

and also there were so many bugs that were never fixed since BETA.
its like "quick!, let's distract them with new challenges!"

some people love to blame the juggies.. when infact they're just like any othe char, you dont know to use it.. you DIE.. period..

imho, for me, what killed the game is.. the overammount of characters and releating them way too fast..

Id say they should have released one pack of maps one month, then one pack of chars, with a 1 new char every week.. not all 4in a bulk.
and keep the charsbased on what they are best.. the chars now look so diluded it isnt funny.

ummm.. I played ten PUGs yesterday. 6 Silver+4 gold:

1) number of AIUs = 0
2) number of Reegars = 1
3) number of Juggs = 2 (~20-23 min games)
4) Game started on consoles, sells most on consoles and most certainly has to be all about PC players?
And BTW, good half of the players I see are pretty low N7/challenge so if anything, there seems to be influx of new players.

Only thing that really saddens me is the state of servers at the moment.

  • Serious imbalances (classes & weapons) still remain.
  • RNG/Store. Nuff said.
  • Lack of a new modes (doesn't mean PvP...just something else other than Horde mode, like actual missions, boss fights, etc).
Those are the mistakes that Bioware has made when it comes to Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer.

...oh, and only 2 Salarians. Hogwash!

Yep it's dying. I'm actually in denial in MP, pretending that the ugly things about it do not exist so I rarely PUG higher difficulties (Rare but irritating appearance of Glitchers). I found fun and thrills in private lobbies, it margianally heals the wounds this game has. Non-box-camping Platinum game FTW!

We are playing a broken game, destroyed by a greedy experiment of sorts and we are the only thing that keeps this alive. The bussiness model surrounding the Packs is weak IMO, without much money to be made there is no reason to take care of us so the game will be as it is.

The bussiness model around the cheap and lazy initial ending (No dialogue? plotholes? All nearly identical?) is strong though, made us search for answers through purchasing overpriced mostly dissapointing DLC save a few, and then Galaxy at War Multiplayer. Eventually we got hooked in the multiplayer for our own reasons (EDI ♥! [AIU], Tali ♥! [FQE], Liara ♥! [AA]) .

I'm just thankful that the servers are still up. One day it will shut down. Just me being the pragmatic person that I am but it will happen, hopefully not anytime soon.

I still play because a few redeemed the game for me without even knowing it. Thank you PS3 Group; Alliance Hazard Force.

D3 has lost 90% of it's player base.  Starcraft is losing the boost from HoS and has fewer players than D3 (which I honestly didn't expect).  TF2 to my knowledge has a pretty stable and consistent user base.

While I do think ME3 MP is starting to die, I highly doubt game balancing has anything to do with it.

My money's on the huge amount of grind. I'm guessing after the last DLC added so many URs, people either unlocked them all and quit, or quit because they figured unlocking so many more URs just isn't worth the time anymore.

That's how I see it at least. Before the DLC, I was getting somewhat close to unlocking every UR and "completing" the game. But now with so many new URs, I've really started questioning the point, considering I now would have to spend A LOT more time to get the new stuff as well.

I find it interesting, this tendency to assume the game is dying because there won't be any further change to it. As long as you play, have fun with it, find enough squadmates to play with, the game isn't dying.
It just no longer benefits of active support, which isn't good a thing in the long run, because people will get more and more fed up with having the same kits, maps, strategies, classes in lobbies etc... then stop playing, then inducing the "i stopped playing because X stopped playing/can't find anyone to play with" spiral.
That doesn't impact us so much just yet.

That said i think the OP's points, despite my dislike for the scrubbernauts, are mostly superficial, except the last one. The behaviour induced by consoles (very few patches possible, no modding) is bad for us PC players. I don't blame them so much on the purely graphics standpoint: while the HD textures proposed by BSN members make the game splendid (though super-slow to load initially) compared to the originals, the original thing isn't that hard on the eyes.

The true problem is more that we can't have new maps while there's a lack of them (Reckoning needed maps much more than it did melee-based kits), or have to bear with enemy numbers limitations.

I don't think it's dying personally! But the things you mentioned haven't 'killed' it in the slightest? However, many bugs are still present and missile glitchers still exist! What it needed was a hell of a lot more support than it received. It needed more maps (lots and lots more), more objectives, more patches and weekly balance changes!
