I wish I could've made a poll here, but I'll ask away anyway.
On most of your playthroughs, which of these two did you choose to leave behind on Virmire in ME1?
The Sacrifice: Kaidan or Ashley?

Left Ashley, because she wasn't even originally part of the Normandy. Besides, Kaidan is a biotic and biotics equal dozens of soldiers (such as Ashley) in combat.
Also you can romance Kaidan as both male and female opposed by Ashley being only available to maleshep. If you dont romance Kaidan as a male, he pretty much becomes an awesome bro.
And to top it off I thought Kaidan's voice acting was way better than Ashley's, but that's just personal preference I guess.

Really tough decision. I saved Ashley because she was my intended LI from the beginning. I liked both characters so much that I left Virmire for the very end of the free roaming part of ME 1 to have them in the squad as often as possible. I believe both characters are voiced by excellent actors (Kimberly Brooks and Raphael Sbarge- who also voiced Carth Onasi and has a recurring role in Dexter).
When you read Chris L'Etoile's notes on how he wrote Ashley, Thane and Legion (yes, this excellent writer was with the original writing team and made critical contributions to ME 1 and ME 2) reveals how many people sadly misunderstand the character. As a LI, it's really rewarding in the end. Kaidan Alenko is a great bro too. For what I saw in my playthough and on youtube from other players, these two characters main contributions in ME 3, dialogue-wise, are fulfilled when you enter a relationship with one and take them on missions a lot. As simple buddies, they may not be as interesting or as vocal as, let's say, Garrus. You can tell in ME 1 that if you have a male Shepard, Ash will have a crush on your character from the get-go. If you don't correspond, she will be jealous at times. This pisses off some people, but i think it's Bioware giving these characters really well-rounded personalities. Just like Mordin, Ash is one of the characters who will stand up to Shepard when their opinions conflict.
If you are a fan of Sam Raimi's "Army of Darkness", Ash shares the name with the movie's main character and has a few lines taken directly from that classic.

Left behind Ashley in 99% of all my games. That's not to say that I don't like Ashley, I do, but I like Kaidan more. And I don't even romance him, hardly ever anyway.
I can agree with this. I think Kimberly Brooks it a good VA, but not an excellent one like Mr. Sbarge. I also have the problem of every time she talks I think of that droid lady in KotOR (whom she did the voice for) and it pretty much ruins every thing she says. I understand some people have this problem with Kaidan equating him with Carth, but since I like Carth that's never been a problem for me.Akugagi wrote...

Since I think just about every playthrough of ME1 that I "finnished" involved a Biotic Shepard I Always choose to save Ashley.
Not because I liked he better, but mostly because my Sheaprd had biotics so I didn't nessesarily need more biotics on my team... Which might sound Cold and calculated.
What I also did was evac the person at the bomb hoping the other one would find a safe spot even if that would be hard given the circumstances. (Obviously he didn't survive)

I wasn't certain which choice would actually result in which death, and I didn't bother reading ahead anywhere so I just flipped a coin and stuck to the side it landed on. Ended up having Kaiden survive, but my Femshep wasn't going to romance him anyway so on that front it makes no difference, though Kaiden does have more interesting things to say.

I save Kaidan. I don't think I could ever sacrifice him, I just can't bring myself too!
One day I will save Ashley!

Kaidan is basically a permanent resident of Virmire.

Wow, looks like Ashley is biting the dust the most. I personally picked her to die when guarding the nuke because it's the honorable way for a soldier to die.

I always save Kaidan, there's not really much to add that you couldn't find in someone else's post. He's a good guy and I found him really useful as a party member.

I save Kaidan, he's a lieutenant and Ashley is just some grunt that tagged along. Her xenophobia is annoying and she wasn't as useful in combat. Wasn't a difficult choice at all.

I always save Ashley. I just find her character and background more interesting and 'colorful', has excellent VA, mows through enemies on the battlefield and can die only if you try really, really hard, possibly not even then.
Kaidan does seem to have a bit more content in ME3 though (from what I've been able to see on YouTube).
BTW isn't there already a (semi)active Kaidan vs. Ashley thread around here somewhere?
EDIT: yes, there is. On this very page lol.

I always choose Ashley. As a soldier, I always send her with Kirrahe on what is effectively a suicide mission, so I feel an obligation to get her out.
Though, I personally like Kaiden more and have one playthrough where he is alive.

Kaidan at first. Because I really didn't know better. Now, Ashley, yeah... ME3 really made me dislike her, not as much as Liara but still.

First game: I thought, "Kaidan's a cool guy." then he angered me in ME2 and I had strong regrets.
Subsequent games, I take Ash, even though she's rendered useless by her ME3 glitch. I have other characters who fill in just fine so no great loss.

ME3 glitch?

It's a glitch on the PC version, after installing the latest patch. The skill "marksman" just makes her activate omnitool in the middle of combat and she doens't do much afterwards. The only solutions is not to evolve the marksman skill tree at all. She's still pretty handy in combat, but it really depends how you use her. She is tremendousy accurate and deadly with the Black Widow, for example, and I only play on Insanity mode.

1) Technically, I saved them both. I saved Kaidan after he armed the bomb and god saved Ashley when it blew up.
2) I couldn't really understand Ash as a character; I'm an objectivist, a pragmatic person, and I thought that Kaidan overall was a more useful person than a grunt soldier.
3) I hated how Ashley would always spew her hatred against aliens, and I'll never understand why people even try to defend her: a racist is a racist ( I also don't understand how she went 360 with Terra Firma and the STG). No matter how many sprinkles you put on top, it's still racist. Anyways, Kaidan is more-or-less a person that I would like to be (brotherly, loyal, emotional, ect), excluding all romance issues, ect.

Well, I've done both on varying playthroughs of course, but suppose I favour saving Kaiden. Lorewise, he's higher ranking, more experienced, and as a powerful biotic is the more useful agent. Also, I like Kaidedn. Not necessarily more than Ashley, but yeah. But I've saved each one an equal number of times anyway.

Saved Ashley, wasnt a hard decision at all.
Never really cared about kaidan, and ashley is one of my favourite characters in all the ME games.
Plus i romanced her too

In ME1 i always used Kaidan as a squad member, so it was top priority to get him out alive.
Plus i've never really been a fan of Ashley, she's kinda ****y IMO

My Virmire policy: all male Shepards saved Ashley, all female Shepards saved Kaidan. Simple as that.
And no, it is not because of homophobia.
