I have playthroughs with both of them saved. I prefer Ash though. They both suck but Ash sucks less. Kaiden always sounds so wimpy and whiny.

Ashly DIF...erm I mean I almost always save Kaidan. I saved ash once though just to see what all the fuss was about...didn't care for her. Kaidan however is one of my favorite characters in the series. If he was given the same attention as Liara-what a wonderful world it would be.

in game reason -- Kaidan is a superior officer and a biotic so he is more valuable in defeating Saren. Ash is cool and all but she is just a regular dime a dozen soldier.

meta game reason -- Kaidan has much better dialogue in Mass Effect 3.

I play male Shepard exclusively and I don't romance either of them.

I usually kill Kaiden, simple because.

I think in my 14 playthroughs of ME1 it was pretty even...but in the playthrough I was making the choices I believed to be the ones I would make in real life, I sacrificed Ashley even though I was romancing her...

I made sure Kaidan was with the bomb since he's a sentinel (half Biotic, half Tech) thinking it would be more logical to have someone with some tech skills in case something went wrong with the bomb...

Then when the choice had to be made to help Ash or Kaidan I chose Kaidan to make sure the bomb went off...

I usually save Ashley because Kaidan creeps me out at times.

I usually leave the person who I left with the bomb - my reasoning is that if they're left at the bomb - they can detonate the bomb and die a nearly instant death as opposed to the fight on the rooftop, where leaving that soldier leads to the terrible fate of a Geth Control Spire (I forgot what they're actually called) and being turned into a husk.

While it's mostly Ashley I save, that's the kind of Commander I play. Ashley is going to guard the bomb in my Soldier playthrough.

I think it's because the Alliance is the only place he's felt welcome being a biotic and all. Like he says "We're not restricted, but we sure don't go undocumented. Might as well get a paycheck for it." And as for him being more inclined to "do the right thing" I think that has to do with the fact that he lost his temper and killed someone when he was 17. That kind of experience can make or break someone. Kaidan regretted it, even if Vyrnnus was an jerk, and it made him a much more controlled person because of it.

Sometimes I think people don't like Kaidan because he has no problems Shepard needs to fix. Posted Image

Thanks Exile! You raise a really good point. I hadn't thought about the fact that I didn't like Kaidan because I thought he was too well-adjusted. :o (Me in surprise, not me in sarcasm)

As I've worked with Kaidan, I've gotten a much better understanding of him as a character. Still kind of prefer Ashley.

I've done a ton of ME playthroughs (over 20 spread across about 7 Sheps, one of which was deleted and re-done) and saved Ash on all but one playthrough (the exception was the one FShep I romanced Kaidan with). I just prefer Ash to Kaidan and it isn't even close (if it wasn't for the romance, I wouldn't have saved Kaidan the one time I did).

Honestly, I just choose randomly, because I don't find myself connecting with either of them on any level. So really, their deaths don't really hit me right in the feels like say Mordin's death in ME3 (I'm not saying I ENJOY watching them die, I just don't like one more than the other because they are both pretty boring characters to me).

Kaidan is basically a permanent resident of Virmire.

This.  I picked Ashley over Kaiden in all but one of my play files.

I'm with them.

On both ME1 saves I still have; I left Kaidan behind, because I thought he was a boring boyscout, and therefore consistent with my characters' "tones" to be left behind. My flagship Shepard believed there's nothing more than can be done with Kaidan, so let him die a hero's death as he wanted while she goes to work to see if she can change Ashley. My second Shepard just thought he was an annoying do-gooder.

Kaidan.

Ashley feels like a waste of space and my Shep didn't want her on the Normandy to begin with (and that snide "well Anderson said I could come." didn't earn her any brownie points). She pretty much permanently dies at the AA tower. My Shep certainly wasn't going to risk the bomb being defused to go back for her.

I have a slightly off topic question. I see a lot of people save the oppsite sex. Maybe I'm boring but I have played ME1 about 6 or 7 times and I always choose the same default style femshep. I change class but that's it. I wonder what I'm missing out by not playing as male shep, but I can't bring myself to change the protagonist. It would be too weird.

Do many people change their shephard each play through? Or do you stick to the same character?

Saved Ash every time. I also refuse to start a FemShep from ME2, because I think by default you save Kaidan.

My Shepards area always vastly different each playthrough. My first Shepard, Elisha, was a fairly generic dark-haired marine who was kind of a boy scout. My second was an Indian woman based on one of my Feminist Studies professors and kicked some Renegade ass! My third Shepard was of Asian descent and was my first female Paragon. Javert Shepard is based loosely on the characters from Les Mis. Valentine Shepard is essentially a man who lives Johnny Cash's song "A Boy Named Sue." I'm still working on the concept for my last Shepard, a female Sentinel.

I base my Mass Effect characters on Roleplaying first, gaming second - so each one tends to look vastly different and act different than other playthroughs. It is a little disconcerting for me watching trailers or videos of gameplay with Shepards that do not look anything like mine, but you get over it after a couple of missions.

I always ended up leaving Ash behind. Simply because I didn't find her as sympathetic as Kaidan. I got sick and tired of hearing her recite poetry and espouse xenophobic sentiments.

Played femshep and first game I romanced Liara. Still got rid of Ash. Even my manshep got rid of Ash. I think she's about the only romance I haven't played through. Well, her and Kelly.

Keep Kaidan, leave Ash. Didn't hate Ash, but I also got tired of hearing her recite poetry and she's relatively useless depending on your class. It is like when someone says something racist, bigoted, or homophobic to you, and they follow it up with an artistic (or scientific) sound bite just to save face so you don't think they're a complete idiot. We've all been there, right guys?

Other than that, Kaidan is more well rounded, you can hear his thought process on his opinions where most characters have staunchly held beliefs for no reason whatsoever (and are quick to abandon them at renegade or paragon conversation option), and his powers in ME3 are THE BEST. That last part makes him invaluable on the harder difficulties. He's really one of the most mature and thoughtful characters in the ME universe, though I know that's not what some people are looking for. So, take that as you will.

Oh it's this thread again.

I save both. Like both equally.

The "Ashley's a racist" thing is total BS. I'm sorry, it is. If you can't understand why she mistrusts aliens at first, you probably don't know that by pursuing a Paragon path she changes her views. Her character does get slightly nerfed in ME3, but she has some killer scenes in the Citadel DLC. Her casino distractions, for example, are some of the best.

Kaiden is a little boring in the first game, but his character becomes fantastic in the third game (again, especially in the Citadel DLC): problem is people who don't save Kaiden never get to know 'Awesome ME3 Kaiden."

In short, can't hate either character, save them equally dependent on the profile being played.

yeyeye she's got beef with the turians because of the First Contact war and what happened with her angry grandpa wawawawawah. she really should just get over herself and get a life......or in every playthrough of mine, an afterlife.

because of it she IS a racist, that's how she starts off. not everyone has the energy and patience to baby her back into civiized society. she easily puts people off from the get go and that's why she often never makes it out of Virmire in one piece. that and Kaidan being way hotter than her :)

those that save her instead, come to regret it when she tells them to go to hell lol. whereas Kaidan tells ya it's been an honor either way.

*edit*

oh and some idiot decided to necro this thread from 2-3 months ago. what is it with idiots constantly necroing threads these days? allsevens777 reported.

Left Ashley, because she wasn't even originally part of the Normandy. Besides, Kaidan is a biotic and biotics equal dozens of soldiers (such as Ashley) in combat.
Also you can romance Kaidan as both male and female opposed by Ashley being only available to maleshep. If you dont romance Kaidan as a male, he pretty much becomes an awesome bro.

And to top it off I thought Kaidan's voice acting was way better than Ashley's, but that's just personal preference I guess.

well, i did the same (for almost the same reasons, because IMHO Kaidan is not awesome in any way (i would have gladly replaced him with any other biotic like say Shiala)...but: i just think a biotic is more usefull then a - simple - soldier (if Ashley were a Tech, then i might decide otherwise) and i (and that is why - even if Ash were a biotic or tech - I probably will always leave her) don't need Xenophobes and goody two shoes with - IMHO - stupid believes (yes she does not want to convert you, i like that, but that she believes in a religion that preached (from ME-Point-of-View) that humanity was gods greatest creation and such drivel (we don't know if they changed that, after finding real aliens) alone is a turn off for me...) on my team (even more if they are bi-polar: i am xenophobic but i hate xenophobic organisations (cerberus and that xenophobe political party) - and that is not strange?

greetings LAX
ps: un-rational hatred is something i can't stand (and i too fear the unknown sometimes - but i don't irrationally hate it or try to stop time to avoid it)
pps: what's bad about "reviving" an old topic if you have something to say? - i don't get that, that is like saying "that movie is 3 months old, that's why you can't watch it and then talk about it" (even if you haven't seen the movie before!)

Out of all the times I've gone through Virmire, Ashley survived about 66% of the time.
