Dropped Kaidan off. Ashley is more likeable (I have never romanced her, so no, its not sexual favor) then Kaidan. Kaidan is just really bland. Ashley at least has the racist factor going for her.

I leave Ashley, 99% of the time. Except my first playthrough, which I later regretted. I didn't hate her like most people do, but she bothered me at times. I almost threw my TV off the wall when she quoted poetry to me, like when people make a bigoted comment then try to follow it up with something smart so you don't think they're a complete d-bag. Kaidan is a more mature squad mate; he's one of the few that you an actually hear his thought process as he works through an issue or situation. Most others just have blind convictions, changed only with a renagade or paragon convo option. Plus, in ME3 he is the most useful member due to Barrier and Reave, he's basically a tank that cannot (exaggerating) die and can set off massive amounts of biotic explosions at the drop of a hat (not exaggerating). Invaluable on higher difficulties, and that cannot be overstated.

I'm not planning on sacrificing Kaidan soon. I'll probably do an Ashley playthrough just to unlock Marksman, but afterwards, I don't plan using her on my team ever again.

Kaiden for me it comes down to who was more effective for the squad Ash was a tank and he was useless.

I don't particularly warm to either character. Kaidan has no edge, and Ashley - well, when she says what she thinks of aliens, it makes me despise her. That said, I've usually saved Kaidan in the past, but in my current full playthrough I've kept Ashley, just to be random really.

Kaidan dies every time. Ashley isn't my favorite character, but she at least has a personality. Kaidan was wallpaper.

and you need a "tank" why? (stay mobile and use your powers (and the powers of the squad) and you should have no problem IMHO (at least if you don't play insanity or something))

I've saved both, but my canon Shep saved Kaidan. He's much more likeable, plus Ash is one of my least favourite characters in the series, xenophobic *****.

Ashley's xenophobia is somewhat understandable considering how destructive and chaotic the galaxy can be. It's not like the other alien races aren't xenophobic towards humans (and other aliens) either. Doesn't she overcome eventually anyway?

Not all races are xenophobic, take the Quarians for example(yeah, again), they're so open-minded about the other races, that interspecies relationships are widely accepted. The only time when they seem prejudiced, is when some of them are surprised what a good speaker a human can be. Zaal'Koris appears distrustful towards Shep, but that's only considering the circumstances, plus he's immediately criticized by the other Admirals. Likewise, the Elcor, Drell and Hanar show no signs of xenophobia.

It's true, that the other races are extremely xenophobic towards humans and each other. Still, her xenophobia always bothered me, especially paired with her meathead attitude.

I agree. Her xenophobia isn't right, but it is understandable.

I almost always sacrifice Ashley and it's not because she ends up looking like Bill Kaulitz in Me3 mind you, but because I view Kaidan as a more valuable asset and he also seem more like plausible Spectre candidate.

Emotions aside I find it hard to justifiy saving a grunt over an alliance officer.

I always sacrificed Kaidan. I dislike both, however.

ME3 made me regret that decision, when it became known that the only way to get "Reave" is to have Kaiden on the squad. Which is ridiculous... but anyway, yeah. Screw you, Kaidan. ;)

I don't like Kaidan's personality much either, but he's a powerful character. Works well with anything like Miranda did in ME2.

I have only one play through with Ash with femshep. The dinner dialogue was a little entertaining but the rest just boring. Kaidan gets saved usually, not because I like him but lack of romance options for femshep. Also I might not have liked Ash much in me1 but I thought she was interesting. Not so with me3 Ash.
Mostly they both get sent to work for Hackett. It was amusing to hear Ash whining when paragon Shep said no.
There should have been an option to leave both behind. Just for choices not because I wanted to. I would have liked to have them both back, without the melodrama.

Great question, I started to fall in love with Kaiden though... man can he be sexy or what, and I wanted to try having him in my playthroughs other than Ash.

Both to me aren't the best characters in the series judging on where they came from and how they act, but they both represent a side of humanity we still face today that is both questionable and understanding.

Ash is xenophobic, is as many humans, but she means it in good intentions. Kinda like how we impersonate that aliens can't act human, and that any alien species cannot comprehend like "we" do. Basically she wants humans to stay more human to show our strengths than "assimilating" into galactic society as a whole. On her religious side, it doesn't play much of a role but she believes in a Christian God (Correct me if I'm wrong), and through that that may represent our humanity to cling onto beliefs like other species have. She's a tough cookie but vulnerable, both are really.

But I don't know about Kaidan. I honestly can't pinpoint him. I seem him as a broken person, but broken in a sense of humanity. He, to me, goes out to help others regardless of self and exceptional need following Samara but without the black and white aura. Kaidan is a buffer between old humanity and new, he can bring emotions typically associated with current events in the game from showing loss of love and self-sacrifice to promptly showing his passion against the enemy. Like I said he is a broken one in the buffer zone, playing a human of mass potential (hehe) and potential of showing humanity in it's polarizable-complex stance on everything but without a proper force to drive him, lost without cause.

I'm not sure if I make any sense, but both characters act in a fashion of favoring their race to an extent as any other species would do but both have their flaws about keeping humanity a little bit more human.

I saved Ash cause I love her as a character. But on a recent playthrough I took Kaidan on more missions (never used him before really, thought he was dull) and he was more interesting than I had expected.
Nevertheless, I can't really play without Ashley being my LI.

in game reason -- Kaidan is a superior officer and a biotic so he is more valuable in defeating Saren. Ash is cool and all but she is just a regular dime a dozen soldier.

meta game reason -- Kaidan has much better dialogue in Mass Effect 3.

This, except I've romanced Ash with my soldier Shepard. Kaidan offers more and feels more natural with his Cerberus objections. Plus in ME3 he actually reintegrates into the Normandy and shows some more personality (post Sanctuary and Citadel springs to mind)..

I've sacrificed Kaidan the first two times (femshep and dudeshep), but haven't romanced Ash yet
on my maleshep playthrough. I managed to screw up somewhere in the dialogue options which forfeit any chance romancing her, but still don't know how I did that.

I kind of like Ashley in the first Mass Effect, but in 3 she became more cynical with a huge air of negativity.

I sacrificed Ash in my third ME1 playthrough, and romanced Kaiden (femshep again). The ME3 playthrough is still in progress, but even now does Kaiden seem more like a 'nice guy', not as negative as Ash.

I'm tempting to romance Ash in my next maleshep playthrough, since having watched some vids of ME3 in that perspective, she actually seems like she's worth it

But first I'll have to finish my Kaiden-playthrough to be able to give a definitive answer to the Kaidan vs Ashley dilemma.

I usually save Ashley. I like having a kick-ass all female squad as femshep. Plus she carries the Typhoon like nobodies business. I swear she is how I got through my Insanity play-through in ME3.

I saved Kaidan once and I regretted it immensely.

Kaidan at first. Because I really didn't know better. Now, Ashley, yeah... ME3 really made me dislike her, not as much as Liara but still.

Ditto. Besides, Kaidan is waaaay more useful in combat.

Kaidan always dies for me. Hes a shallow and dull character in ME1, Ashley is not perfect either ( Space racist ) but i like her better out of the 2, and its not related to being a LI as most of my characters are femsheps.

I like both of them and I've left them both behind at one time or another. The first time it took about 5 minuets to decide to save Kaidan. I did save LI sometimes, but I also left them behind because for those games it was the right thing to do.

And eventually I started taking turns. It was harder to leave Kaidan behind because I like him a bit more than Ash, But either way leaving someone behind was a hard thing to do.

Then again it was a happy accident.
