Hey! I just decided that I want to do the ultimate challange: The complete Mass Effect trilogy with NO DEATHS (Dead Is Dead) on INSANITY.

"Why do this?" I hear you ask. The reason is simple: Immersion. I want to feel threatened by the enemies of the game without the comfort of reloading after a mistake. In a real war, you don't get a second chance if you do a mistake. I want every single encounter to be deadly. I want to feel the adrenaline as I fight my way through all kinds of opponents, and feel the thrill of winning against all odds, without dying.

But alas, I need some help. If I am to undertake this kind of mission, I need help from the best!

I have played through the Mass Effect trilogy once (on Insanity), so I can't remember every single encounter and prepare accordingly... Only the ones where I died the most (Mass effect 1 being THAT game where I died the most....)  Mass effect 2 was the easiest one by far, I only died once (Damn that threser maw who surprised me by destroying the cover and staggerlocking me...!). In Mass Effect 3 I tended to die to those "special encounters" like the one where I had to mark the reaper for an airstrike, I literally died like 5 times on that one...

Anyways, I need help on what class and builds I should do. I DO NOT want to play as an Adept, as that was my previous character.

I'd really want to try the Engineer as apparently it's the "worst" class and I'd like to show people that this can indeed be done.

The playthrough will be started with a level 1 character, with no bonus powers.

I think Wrex and Ashley would be good choices for an Engineer, seeing as how they have lots of health, and Wrex has some much needed biotics for crowd control. I myself would specialize in survival (obviously!) and medecine. Playstyle would be to sit in the back and destroy enemy shields and neural shock dangerous enemies. This all seems very good on paper for me, but how good is it in reality? I can't just type "engineer builds" on the internet because they put next to nothing on survival because they don't use the same rules as I...

Any help?

I wonder what kind of rage you would experience if you made it all the way through the trilogy and then died on Marauder Shields in ME3....Actually in reality, you could die at any point in the trilogy due to any potential glitches or bugs or just plain accidents.
But if you want to go ahead...
Start of the Journey: Single Playthrough Builds][Mass Effect 1] Start of the Journey: Single Playthrough Builds.

Mass Effect 1 and 2 List of Strategy Guides Found on the Forum.

Mass Effect 3 The Big Strategy Thread: Many threads hyperlinked. Start here for Mass Effect 3. It contains more links for you. Best links would be for the ones listed below
Mass Effect 3 Optimal Builds At Level 40. This assumes starting at level 1 and reaching level 40. Assume you will start at level 30 for an ME2 import.
Mass Effect 3 What are the best squadmate builds? (Level 60).

Thanks for the reply. If I die because of a glitch or malfunction, I am allowed to reload the latest auto-save. Accidents, however, are not excusable. I can't afford to make accidents happen. My playstyle will be so careful that no accident WILL happen. :)

Also, I will complete all games 100%. All the collection missions and DLC in ME1, too.

To be honest I'm mostly worried about the thraser maws in ME1. They used to kill me by emerging from UNDER the mako.... I think I'll just run away if I encounter one.

Also, the builds do not really work for ME1 as I HAVE to focus on survival first and foremost. Those guides only say "an engineer can hang in the back and rarely gets shot so you don't need armor. If you die just reload and try again", and I can't do that. I HAVE to survive. I have to make myself immune to one shot kills, first and foremost. I am not even sure if an engineer can accomplish this. I certainly hope so.

Sure, if you play cautiously enough, you can minimize the chance of accidents.

Accidents that have happened to me in ME3 that come to mind:
 - Running into a grenade that I never saw thrown (and was not highlighted)
 - Getting crushed by the Reaper on Tuchanka. More than once.
 - Leviathan DLC: getting killed by an orbiting Harvester when trying to rescue Ann Bryson at the Dig Site.
 - Leviathan DLC: getting hit from behind by a Reaper meteor on the Shipwreck and then killed by the Cannibals before I could turn around.

As for Thresher Maws in ME1, if you know where one is, it will always appear away from the Mako. Stay in one spot and jump with the Mako boosters when it shoots acid at you. If you move too much along the ground, it will go back underground where it can appear under you or beside you and then kill you in one melee hit.

Personally, I would hate playing the 20-40 hours it takes to play a game only to die a stupid death, but good luck.

I'm not going to lie, Mass Effect 3 scares me the most... ME1 and 2 didn't really have these special instakill things that ME3 has... I'll be damn proud of myself if I'll get that far, though.

Thanks for the tip about the threser maws!

Only issue now is the class choice... I do NOT want a biotic class. They just don't fit in the story, in my opinion. They cause so many plotholes such as why couldn't a Vanguard charge when chasing someone in a cutscene etcetc... It's either soldier or engineer. I do not like the tactical cloak on the infiltrator as it also seems like a huge plothole in many a cutscene....

Thank you for all the replies! :)

I don't know if I could handle the first praetorian fight in the second game with no deaths. Or the Benezia fight come to think of it. Anyway, good luck! :wizard:

Holy sh-! Sir I salute you for even trying this.I realize this was not at all a helpful post, but I needed to say this, cause I never thought I would hear of someone doing this.

P.S. Are you starting Mass Effect as a level one on insanity for this? If so....well good luck!. I need to learn to read...

Also ,between Soldier and Engineer I would say Soldier, if only because I remember it as being the tankiest class, which would be good for decreasing the chance of bs deaths.

So, I started playing this morning. Went with a Soldier for role-play/immersion reasons. I just got out of the Citadel (Did all quests so far). Made it through with no deaths. The hardest fight was against the two assassins right outside of Chora's Den, the one with a shotgun took me completely off-guard by using immunity and then charging at us. Thankfully Kaidan had his throw ready to knock him back and help finish him off.

Anyways, next I think I'll do all side missions on planets (and all the collection quests) before heading into the main planets (Noveria, Feron and the Liara dig site). Reason being that I think these quests were waaay easier than the main quest ones, and as I'll be inside the Mako most of the time it should be pretty easy. I'll post more updates as I get further, and if I die I'll obviously post that too (which would also be the end of this playthrough).

The teammates I'm using are Kaidan and Wrex. So far it's seems as a good combo. Wrex can take a serious beating and also has some nice biotics which are ESSENTIAL for this type of extreme difficulty. Kaidan likes to die alot, but I have him along for opening chests and also some biotic abilities.

Here are some tips for people wanting to do the same thing:

NEVER SABOTAGE KROGANS. They'll just charge you in melee if they can't use their weapons. And let me tell you, Kaidan knows how bad that is.

Assault rifles are useless. Either I'm using it wrong, or I don't have proper upgrades, but so far it is extremely bad for insanity. You stay exposed waaay too long and do so little damage... The sniper is my preferred choice so far, weaking enemies from a distance, and when someone closes in (mid-range) I use pistol. I never go to close combat.

Will post my progress here. I do expect to die tomorrow though, haha. So many close calls so far.

Wow, dude...good luck. I know I wouldn't make it.

I think you're on the right track, though, with pistols and snipers in ME1. Master Marksman has the highest DPS in the first game, and snipers allow you to take out turrets from afar on planet exploration/collection missions. You can use the terrain to your advantage to avoid turret shots or allow your shields/health to replenish before exposing yourself again.

In ME2, however, I would think Assault Rifles would be the way to go. ME3...well, insta-kills aside, I actually think it's probably the easiest. Biotic Explosions and Tech Combos rule. With a Soldier, you could just prime everything with Incendiary Ammo, then detonate with almost any squadmate power. Respec into Stasis as your bonus power for the fight with Kai Leng. It'll help you keep the Phantoms at bay.

Good luck!

Alright, time for an update!

So far things have gone exceptionally well! Haven't died yet! I did most of the side quests from other planets, and went to get Liara from Therum. I didn't have any problems whatsoever. The hardest fight has still been the 2 assasins outside of Chora's Den, heh. I was expecting the last fight on the Liara recruitment mission to be hard (the one with the Krogan) but it wasn't at all! I retreated a bit back, and the Krogan just went behind cover while I shot the geth from afar... And a lone krogan is easy to handle haha.

The game is starting to become almost too easy. With master immunity I have 80 % damage reduction, along with my natural 50+ % damage reduciton, so I'm pretty much invincible while using it (Not sure if they stack. I don't think so). Normal small arms fire from troopers I can tank without immunity, my health regen is so high it just ignores it heh. I'm pretty confident I can make it through the game with no deaths, unless there is some REAAALLLY hard boss coming up...?

I'm level 22 at the moment, just got out of the Luna base with my specialization class (shock trooper).

I switched out Wrex for Liara. She is a beast. Kaidan is still with me though, he is too good to pass up.

Overall, I think I can make it. I'm a little concerned about Benezia, but I think I'll be alright (I'll do that mission last).

Have you already completed the Wrex: Family Armor quest with the Tonn Actus fight? I recall that one being a beast on Insanity if you start from level 1 and do it early.

Another update!

Just completed Feros, and it was, unurprisingly, very easy. I thought the Asari Clone(s) at the end would give me trouble, but neural shock + throw off the ledge made it a cakewalk. I am confident with going to Noveria.

I have to say that without Master Immunity, it would be next to impossible to do this. That ability is just too good... Also biotics like lift help alot haha!

I have not done any companion quests, no, so I wouldn't know. Don't even remember that fight from a previous playthrough... Either it was just a normal fight for me OR I missed it (doubtful, I remember Wrex talking about how I helped him get his armor...)

I think I've done around 50 % of ME1 atm! I'm pretty proud of myself! :)

Also as an edit:

I think Soldier is THE best class if you ever try to do this. Only the infiltrator also has Immunity, but he does not get heavy armor. He does get some very nice tech abilites, but for survival I have to say the soldier is better. Atought if taking into account ALL 3 games, the infiltrators survival surpasses the soldiers (reason being the tactical cloak in ME2 and 3, which is by far the best survival ability in the game, and also the general nature of being a typical infiltaror, satyying back and sniping, tends to keep you alive). So if you are considering doing this, I'd suggest Soldier or Infiltrator. I went with soldier for Role play reasons, as previously mentioned.

Update!

And I died. Goddamn Thrasher Maw... Yup, died in a random planet exploration to a thrasher maw... Damnit! I'm really sad now haha...Argh I wanted to die an epic death to like Saren or someone :D Oh well, guess dying to a thraser maw isn't that bad... Right?

This has been a pretty fun playthrough, to be honest! Altough I think my death was such BS (I was so careless and paid for it)...

I'm thiking about restarting, but with an engineer! I also thought that I'd video the "hardest" fights to show you how I did/do them! :)

Will update more soon!

I suppose it depends on your view of Thresher Maw fights. And maybe on Shepard's background: Sole Survivor Shepard finally dying to a Thresher Maw would be rather fatalistic.

As for the Thresher Maw, how did you die? Too much acid spit because you failed to jump or move out of the way in time, or did you get happen to get too close and it killed you in one melee hit?

It took me by surprise. I was just driving towards a location, and it suddenly just popped up, when I noticed it I started doing a u-turn, whilst firing at it, and it went underground and hit me while coming up...

Alrighty, did an introduction video to my playthrough, and will keep posting videos until I eventually die. :)

Please forgive me if I say something gramatically incorrect, English is not my first language haha.
Also, if you disagree with something I say feel free to tell me! I am by no means a Mass Effect pro, I just like challanging myself in different ways.

Thanks! :)

As I said in the video, I'll only do the "hardest" fights in the game, so there shouldn't be THAT many videos (maybe 10 or so for ME1, depending on if I die or not), that first video is just longer because I try to explain my combat tactics and gear as well as possible so that I don't have to do it later. :)

I mean, really...How can you have immersion when you have already played the game through and through millions of times before and know exactly what's gonna happen?...Besides, with THAT monstrous ending at the end of the tunnel...you are probably going to lay down your arms and give up before the enemies kill you. (Marauder Shields would be so disappointed) Nothing personal, but seriously, if you don't get bored enough and actually finishes your "challenge", I will wonder what you do in life, what great injustice was done to you that compels you to commit such an act...

Sorry for being so negative, but I'm just telling the truth...

No worries, I totally see where you are coming from! ^_^

I don't know if you have played older games, but those games were all about "if you die, you have to start over" and I personally LOVE those games! I LOVE the Witcher 2 with its hardest difficulty setting (it deletes your saves if you die, awesome). :bandit:

I have played through the triolgy ONCE, so I don't remember every encounter haha, only the most memorable ones and the ones where I died the most! ;)

I don't quite understand your last sentance... Playing like this isn't a punishment, just persnoal preference! You should try it! Try playing on normal with dead is dead, I think that'd be tons of fun, too! ;)

Gaming is all about having fun, right? And I am having fun like this. :)

I'm so glad that you aren't mad...I was kinda worried about that. I guess it all comes down to personal preference really. I, for one, think that this is really some kinda self-inflict punishment  But hey, if you're having fun...go for it. Alright, I wouldn't say good luck finishing your odyssey. I would say "live long and prosper".

Hell no, scratch that  I would say good luck having fun!

Progress update!

So, I've finished Therum, Feros and Noveria now, and will do ALL sidequests before going to Virmire. If you've been following the videos you can see that I died to the Krogan on Therum, BUT, Tali glitched out (see video) so I got a second chance. :)

Uploading the replay fight against the krogan as well as the fights from Feros and Noveria (I got soooooo lucky against Benezia, I can't even explain haha)

Sounds like a lot of fun dude. I found mass effect the hardest to do on insanity, 2 being the next difficult and 3 a straight up joke ( or maybe just my skill level is just to good. :P). I never experienced insta kills in 3 other than the normal Banshee kill shot etc. As far as maruader shields guy. I have only ever died to him once in my first ever play through. I don't know if peeps were joking or not but he is easy even on insanity, head shots cause him to stagger... Good luck tho.
