RUN!!!

Seriously, I was chasing down a goat for its horns (I needed more lamps in my house) and it ran right into a snow bear. I was only at level 12 so I turned around, cast a familiar, and ran like crazy. I managed to escape, though I wasn't sure I would make it. Lots of stamina potions.

Ha! I did run from them on more than one occasion :D One of my characters almost escaped one when some nearby necromancer put an ice spike in him slowing him down and letting the bear to close distance -_-

I remembered one other bane of DiD characters - vampire attacks with Dawnguard DLC! A Master Vampire with two Death Hounds at level 12 is not something you wish to see in Whiterun lol :D

I'm starting a Mass Effect 1 with both DLCs "dead is dead" run. Well, I'd rather call it a "no-reload" run.

I need some advices, though. What are the critical points I should be paying attention to? I learned that fighting Thresher Maws on foot can save you from instant death, and that Soldier class with good heavy armor can save you from instant death from rockets and such things. Any other (non spoilering) advices?

Do the DLCs have particularly dangerous points, for example? Are there particular critical mission failures throughout the game?

P.S.: Hopefully it will be my fourth "no-reload" run after Drakensang: The Dark Eye, Baldur's Gate EE and Dragon Age: Origins. Seems I don't find any more fun in the "classic" way of playing :)

I suppose the big thing I'd say for ME1 is that biotics are hugely powerful. If I were doing this, I think I'd only take Liara/Kaidan/Wrex as squadmates at all times.

Well, I'm going to play on normal difficulty. I like the challenge but I'm not making it frustrating. Not reloading for the whole game is enough :-) I also mean I'm going with the first Mass Effect, not thinking about a 1-3 run. I think that, being careful, I can make it.

Only thing that scares me are Thresher Maws, I found out that they go back into the ground even if you're on foot..

Here's another challenge: has anyone ever done a playthrough of the series with melee and powers only (no weapon fire)?  Not sure that's even possible. I've played through the entire Bioshock series this way (including 1999 mode BSI!), but the ME series might be harder.

I did it in ME3 (link in the signature). Though I don't think it'll work well in ME1. Fighting krogan with melee...

I did an ME3 playthrough only using reave. Very easy. Haven't done that for ME1 and ME2

You can do it in ME3, with the exception of certain sequences (Eva on Mars, some latches, and the husks+Marauder at the end where you have to shoot).

Should be possible in ME2, although I have only done it for certain missions. There may be a few instances where you have to shoot to continue. The power core in the Derelict Reaper mission is one instance where you can destroy it with powers, but it takes a veeeeeeery long time to do, so you pretty much need to shoot it to destroy it. But that is the exception instead of the rule.

ME1 would be the hardest, probably impossible. Tech powers are the only real damaging powers, but they do not do that much damage. Biotic and tech powers are mostly about crowd control. You melee with the shoot button but you have to be close to the enemy you want to melee. Melee and power damage becomes increasingly less useful the higher the game difficulty. You would have to do it on Casual or Normal difficulty to do it. Immunity-spamming Krogan would be a pain on higher difficulties.

I just know I would never attempt it in ME1. ME2 is certainly possible and I think I could do it. I pretty much have already done it in ME3.

I think it will be possible in an Engineer NG+. You can have powers to recharge crazy fast, similar to ME2. Add a biotic squadmate for crowd control and it might work.

For ME1 power and melee only, I think infiltrator on NG+ or possibly Soldier would be the only semi-practical way.  Also somewhat depends on if you allow Carnage.  Either way though, you at least can hit Immunity when you need to go toe to toe with some of the absurd units.

There is a playthrough somewhere on youtube of a "no-guns" run through the trilogy. I am pretty sure it is not on insanity, however.

I have a playthrough of ME1 twice on Insanity, no death - First was I think a soldier, second (and my current challenge run) was as a vanguard. I live stream my gameplay, and post fight videos to YouTube (I am behind on the YT uploads).

Twitch.tv/Catreina for the live stream of the playthrough, and YouTube.com/Catreina for the video clips.
