Sheesh. Three days of intensely painful 3ds Max tripping up trying to get Tali's face properly integrated and weighted for animation into her default body and I THINK I have her about ready. I lost count of how many times I had to start over again.

I hope to test her in the game in the next few days but in the meantime, the latest rendering of her face. I altered her eyes (again) so now they have semi-catlike pupils and a bright golden color:

Beating SlipperyHammer to the punch, are we? ;)

Very nice progress there, hope it'll work out in-game.

Slippery Hammer had the exact same problem with the weighting. But if he uses Getorex' modded mesh as a base ...? Must put a note in his thread ... ever since they disabled PMs to people not on your friends list ... *grumble*

Ah...I'd forgotten Slippery's. In any case, I wanted to do it figuring if I could do this then I might be able to work out EDI-Eva's combo face mod. The issues with that aren't face weightings but altering the UV maps. I had to do it for this Tali mod so I'm now pretty sure that I can pull it off for EDI-Eva's.

There's an oddity with Tali's skeleton here that I hope wont cause an issue in the game. One of her facial bones is non-functional. The bone for lowerLip_Right is inert so that particular part of facial animation is undoable. I thought it was a goof on my part in all the cutting and pasting but I imported a fresh Tali as part of skinning/weighting my edit and found it was inert there too and that was right out of the game. Not a problem for the default Tali since she has no lower face to deal with but still...

Would you provide a link to his thread?

This is the Tali face mod thread and in the video linked here Slippery Hammer's last made a progress update and mentioned weight issues at around the part when Tali starts to speak.

This looks great! Hope it doesn't drive you nuts working out the problems 'cause I'm looking forward to using this when it's available.

It is getting close to driving me nuts. It's at a point where I should be able to import it into the game for testing but me3explorer wont display the model and the game locks up on start. Trying to figure out the issue because 3ds, udk, umodel all display it without issue or complaint. Grrrr.

Well that sucks, sorry. If you can pull it off though it'll rock.

WOOT! OK, testing Tali-with-a-face in-game now! WarrantyVoider helped me find the problem and now it imports via ME3explorer and renders. Will now try in-game (without the modded texture, just the mesh) and will then try with the texture mod.

UPDATE: the mesh works fine in game!  No screenie yet - the texture mod isn't loaded and her faceplate details haven't been changed to make it more see-through but the mesh does not crash the game.

Tali face mesh mod: there is a problem with body weighting that I need to fix (right arm/shoulder is screwy) and one eyeball is a little off but she is working with the new texture:

Pfff, what's a messed up arm-mesh, eh?

A round of applause to this.

Her left arm/shoulder is messed up.  The weights are off so I'll have to fix it for the finished mod.  Also, her right eye is a little off-kilter.  I'll check bone weights there too or try resetting the way the eye sits in the socket so they are correct.

This is great! ( And creepy:blink:)
Is it possible to give a slight hue to her helmet again (not as strong as in ME1, just a bit)?

I guess I didn't specify...this is with her faceplate completely removed so the face was in full view.  My intention is to make the faceplate less opaque (more see-through) so the face is visible but not 100%.  In that case the low rez face texture will be largely irrelevant (her original face texture is the same low rez too and there's not much that can be done to change that, unfortunately.

OK, Tali-with-a-full-face is done except for one thing...the faceplate texture. I need to change the texture so it is less opaque so the face is more visible. As soon as I get that done I can release her. The weird shoulder issue above is corrected and she looks perfect otherwise.

FYI, I know that Jean Luc fella who did a bunch of texture mods for ME2 (and ME3) made Tali's face more visible in ME2. Don't know if you can contact him but... so yeah. :)

Just sent him a friend request so I could ask.  I acquired his tpf of the Tali texture with the more visable face and have looked at the textures but I STILL can't figure out which one is the magic one that controls the visor opacity.

Announcement: the Tali full face mod (part 1) should be available by the end of the day. The final hinderance has been overcome (changing the opacity of her visor). The mod will apply to her default uniform and give her a full animated face, a texture to go with it, and change the visor opacity from the default of 98% opaque to 70% opaque (for starters...likely to change).

The next mod will apply to Tali's first alternate uniform, doing the same thing as above.

The Tali mod. A couple issues, one texture related, the other involving her eyes:

Image IPB

Image IPB

I have a plan to fix the issues...starting with using a hi-rez Tali texture so I can maximize face resolution.  I'm just going to go back to mapping the entire face rather than splitting it and mirroring it on the same half-face.  I'll remap the eyeball texture a bit so the pupils fall lower on the eye as a cheap fix for the eyes tending to turn up too much, and fix a minor weight issue with her lower right eyelid.  That should do it.

I was pleased with her mouth movement when she vocalizes so I think, for now, I'll leave that be.

A few minor glitch corrections yet and then this should be ready for release. Trying to fix a minor eyeball movement issue pointed out a few random weighting problems that need some manual fixing (ugh...I hate that as it can easily lead to downstream glitches as such errors propagate to new locations in the mesh).

On that note, if someone can tell me how to identify a vertex in 3ds that has NO weight at all, I'd appreciate it. In my last test after "fixing" a Tali eyeball glitch I ended up with an unknown vertex from her lower body that formed a spike straight up above her, indicating a vertex without any weight at all assigned. Without an ID I have no idea what bone to weight it against.
