So I just finished DA2 on nightmare diffculty with this strategy and I thought I should share.

I assume you are familar about how you should play the game on higher diffculties like pasung game during battles often and switch control between characters, therefore its not boring at all to play Healer mage hawke since you will control other party members more and Hawke is the best healer.

Anders and Aveline HAVE to be in the party and recommended rouge member is Isabella since she is the very tough as a rouge and her protection is quite needed.

Anders is the main DPS here, get all talents regarding DPS on his Vengeance tree and ignore the healing skills. Get damaging spells as you see fit, eventually you'll get them all.

Aveline is tank, no brainer. Have her body guard active on Anders all the time and protect Anders.

Isabella should be able to dps single targets with large health pool while Anders dispose the rest with his op damage with vengeance active plus his friendship bonus (10% to all damage)

Heal with your hawke.

Just protect Anders and assume control of him often and crush your enemies with his AoE though becareful, you can crush yourself and your allies to so just position them.

It really works, for example you can cast chain lightning on group of low health enemy archers. It will kill them in 1 shot and since killing units heals anders it restores all of his hp most of the time.

Thanks for sharing! I barely ever step a toe out of "Normal" on either DAO/A or DAII so hearing success stories like this is mighty encouraging.

Good to hear - though your recommendation of Isabela for rogue DPS made me raise an eyebrow. Surely Varric is more useful - he's higher DPS and range is more useful than melee, no? I'd even be more inclined towards Sebastian than Isabela.

Isabella does more overall dps mainly because of burst damage, but at a high cost in gold.
Varric is a better utility/ranged character. 

You have to remember that Bianca scales at an average rate per Varric's level.  With Isabella, you can buy the premium weapons throughout the game and keep her dps well above Varric's because of it.

Also Isabela can be semi tank and help with protecting Anders.

A friend Anders with Vengeance active deals 35% more overall damage than any mage. That removes extra health enemies have in nightmare.
