No. A while back Mary Kirby responded to a discussion about her and said that Bianca isn't necessarily dead. 

 

That's a little vague. Isn't necessarily dead could mean a lot of things that aren't necessarily alive either. Maybe that's wishful thinking on my part though. 

 

But Bianca's status aside, it has been at least 10 years. I'm a romantic, but if you part ways with someone for that long other people can and will fill that void, and that's okay. Varric is a very decent fellow - the most decent of any companion in DA:2. I like him a lot as a character so naturally if I had my druthers he'd be my romantic choice. It's a shame that he has to be tied down by the events that transpired to separate him from Bianca and it would be nice to give him the opportunity to move on from it.

Replaying DA2 with Varric in my party and that plus his quip in the trailer is making me very conflicted. Dammit, Varric, stop making me like you so much! You're just going to break my heart again.   I swear, if I spend another game pining after this guy...

So long as the Inquisitor is pining right along with us, I'll be a happy camper. Not all love is necessarily requited, but I'll be satisfied if I can express my adoration for our favorite storytelling dwarf and get a response (even a negative one) back from him.

So what do people think of the comparison to the Last Supper/War Room screencap and the possibility of a traitor?  Varric is most posed like Judas, and given that he is almost universally loved from DA2, his impact as traitor would be that much more effective.

The treachery could even be motivated out of his love for Bianca.

From what I've seen on the forums, people seem pretty split on the Judas position being possible-Cole/Varric/Solas, with a lean more towards Solas... if I were to go by the majority of posts I have run across.

 

If BioWare wanted to wring out tears (and possible dry-heaving from ultimate video game emotional shock), a Varric betrayal would pretty much stick the knife directly into my heart more than anything else would.

 

I really don't know how I'd handle that. It would be like Garrus betraying Shepard. I... I just don't even know how I'd deal. I also don't know if I'd want to go back and do multiple playthroughs, though, like I have the past two DA games. Some things are just too painful that they suck the fun out, and I could easily see that being mine in a lot of the same way some of my friends can't play ME ever again because of how badly the ME3 ending (original release, pre-Extended Cut and pre-Citadel) affected their experience and turned it from emotionally-engaging to completely sour.

 

EDIT: Honestly, I think I'd rather be faced with Varric dying rather than a Varric betrayal, and that's pretty tough to say because a Varric death would be gut-wrenching for me, too. But at least it would be less likely to kill my will to play the game over and over again.

I don't think Varric has it in him to be a traitor. He was the one party member who would stand by Hawke no matter what. Arguably that was because he really didn't have a stake in that final mage/templar conflict, but it's also because he is a good person. So I dunno if I buy the speculation.

I think the allure of that particular line of speculation is the pure shock value of it, but I feel the same way you do.

Eh, I think characterization trumps shock value, and after all the flack Bioware got over Anders I doubt they'd make Varric a traitor just to sucker-punch the player.

Also Varric felt very betrayed by Ander's actions , who is the most "Judas" type character we've had.  He makes that quite clear during the Cassandra interrogation "Don't remind me" . Varric is presented as the "loyal" one of the DA2 group so I doubt he would double cross the Inquisitor. He seems like the type to just get up and leave if you do something really morally incomprehensible rather than plot your demise or switch sides.

Oh man, I couldn't handle it if Varric became a traitor.

 

Now I can see Varric turning his back on the inquisitor if he/she does something that goes against Varric's morals, but I can't see him ever betraying the Inquisition. I think Varric has too strong a moral compass for that.

While I agree with you completely, I cannot even imagine the giggling the writers would experience reading over these posts if we all happen to be wrong.

 

I mean, it's only human; I know I would be slamming my hands over my mouth, barely containing my gleeful screeching if I'd written a character who everyone insisted was a loyal, steadfast bro character when I planned to have said character betray all his friends.

 

But anyway, everyone is probably right. I think Cole is a little too obvious for a traitor, so if such a thing were to happen, I'd probably suspect Solas first.

Seeing a character you like becoming a traitor is tragic.

I think it could be an interesting mechanic though if someone were to betray the Inquisition as a follower.

If it was hard to predict or something. If it follows rules like "lowest approval" "Least used" etc then people will just single out characters they hate to kill off.

I doubt Varric is a traitor though since he never betrays Hawke except for the Fade.

Eh Anders was always a ******, i saw his tretchery coming a hundred miles away through thick fog whilst i was hung over and facing the other way.

I don't get where the Varric tretchery theme has come from, he has no reason to blow up a chantry. Maaaaybe if you gave him the red lyrium idol he might go wonky donky, off the deep end, bonkers, a turnip short of a vegetable patch so to speak. However no reason to be a traitor (based on what we know from DA:2 and the 30 minute gameplay demo) I mean if you do something he doesn't like i think Varric is more the type of man to just say "Hey, don't be a dick" and if you continue being a dick then he would call you out and maybe leave the group, but not be an evil traitor person, no way no how not our man Varric Tethras.

I forgot all about the pining and the heartbreak since DA2 felt like a lifetime ago and I long accepted that Varric was simply the ship that sailed. He had his game after all.  But then they bring him back and make him even hotter than before XD Conflicted indeed! Now all we can do is wait.

Wild speculation.

 

People see a resemblance between the war room screenshot from the most recent trailer and the famous painting of The Last Supper, showing Jesus and His 12 Apostles.

 

Judas was the one who betrayed Jesus. Where he is standing in the photo, people think corresponds to the area possible-Cole/Varric/Solas are standing.

 

That's literally where that came from.

So, basically, the fact that the ending war room shot looks like The Last Supper, and The Last Supper had a betrayer in it, that's leading people to suspect DA:I will have a betrayer at that table.

Sadly, I'm suspecting we won't get a whole lot since he's a returning companion, while there are other brand new ones I imagine BioWare will want to eventually get out info on.

 

Just my suspicions, though.

 

Frankly, I just really wanna know a yes or no on his potential LI status. Just to have the uncertainty over and done with, no matter the answer.

Oddly enough, if you actually look at the table groupings in both The Last Supper and the War Room shot (four groups of three, with the central thirteenth figure alone in the middle), it would be COLE who occupies the spot of Judas, not Varric. Although Varric does fit the parallel of being the, ahem, lowest situated member of the group, like Judas in the original painting.

 

(Man, who knew taking Art History while studying abroad this year would benefit me on BSN??)

 

Overall, I think the similarity is more grounded in the imagery rather than the symbolism. If Varric does end up being a traitor though, I am going to cry. I am going to cry, and scream, and probably put down the game for a year or two in my tumultuous grief.
